Chapter 8

Evelyn Vance stood on the curb as her two sons were loaded into police vehicles like common criminals. Her pristine white coat was damp from the mist, her tailored composure completely shattered. When she saw me approach, her legal team tried to step between us, but I shoved them aside with a single forearm strike that sent both lawyers stumbling back onto the wet grass.
"Get out of my way," I said without even looking at them.
I stopped two feet from Evelyn. Up close, I could see the fine lines of panic carved into her face, the subtle twitch in her eye as she watched thirty years of political dominance crumble around her in a single evening.
"You think this is over, Colonel?" Evelyn rasped, her voice trembling with suppressed rage. "My legal team will have those arrest warrants thrown out by noon tomorrow. We own the appellate judges in this circuit. We own the district attorney!"
"You owned them, Evelyn," I corrected her, pulling out my phone and playing a live audio broadcast from the local Charlotte news network.
The news anchor’s voice echoed clearly in the quiet night air: "...In a stunning late-night development, Federal Agents have arrested Federal District Judge Harold Sterling and state prosecutor Donald Vance on charges of racketeering, bribery, and obstruction of justice in connection with the Apex Holdings land fraud scandal..."
Evelyn’s breath hitched in her throat. Her eyes dilated in absolute terror.
"The State Attorney General just held an emergency press conference," I continued, pocketing my phone. "Your bank accounts have been frozen under federal RICO laws. Your private jet has been impounded. Your security team is currently being processed at the county jail. By morning, every property owned by Apex Holdings will be under federal seizure."
Evelyn took a step back, her hand reaching for her throat as if she were suffocating. "You... you destroyed my family..."
"No," I said, stepping closer, my voice dropping to a terrifyingly soft register. "Your family destroyed itself the moment Julian put his hands on my daughter, and you decided to cover it up. You thought because I wore a military uniform, I was bound by rules you could easily exploit. You forgot one critical detail."
"And what is that?" Evelyn whispered, her voice cracking.
"I don't just follow orders," I said, leaning in until my face was inches from hers. "I execute missions. And my mission was to protect my child from monsters like you."
Without waiting for a response, I turned my back on her and walked toward my SUV. Behind me, two federal agents stepped up to Evelyn Vance, pulling out a set of steel handcuffs.
"Evelyn Vance," the lead agent said loudly enough for the gathering news cameras to hear. "You are under arrest for federal racketeering, money laundering, and obstruction of justice. You have the right to remain silent..."
I didn't turn back to watch her get cuffed. I got into my SUV, closed the door, blocking out the flashes of news cameras and red police lights, and drove straight back to St. Bernard Hospital.
When I walked into Maya’s hospital room, the morning sun was just beginning to peek over the Charlotte skyline, casting a warm, golden glow through the window. The cold mist and rain of the night had finally cleared away.
Maya was sitting up in bed, watching the live news coverage on the wall-mounted television. On the screen was the footage of Julian, Marcus, and Evelyn Vance being led into the county courthouse in orange jumpsuits and belly chains.
When I opened the door, Maya turned her head. Tears were streaming down her face, but for the first time in months, they weren't tears of fear or pain. They were tears of pure, overwhelming relief.
"Mom..." Maya choked out, holding out her arms.
I crossed the room and pulled her into a tight, protective embrace. We stayed like that for a long time, holding onto each other as the warm sunlight filled the room.
"It’s over, Maya," I murmured into her hair, feeling the tight knot of tension in my chest finally begin to dissolve. "They're gone. They will never, ever hurt you again."
"I saw the news," Maya sobbed, her hands clutching my uniform jacket. "They arrested all of them... even the judge..."
"The whole fortress came down," I said softly, wiping a tear from her cheek. "You're free, sweetheart."
Detective Vance walked into the room a few minutes later, carrying two paper cups of hot coffee. She handed one to me and smiled warmly at Maya.
"Morning, kiddo," Vance said. "Just thought you'd like to know that the District Attorney personally signed the non-contact protective orders. Julian and his family will be held without bail until their federal trial."
"Thank you, Detective," Maya said sincerely.
"Don't thank me," Vance chuckled, nodding toward me. "Thank your mother. I’ve seen SWAT teams take down cartels with less efficiency than she showed tonight."
I smiled faintly, taking a sip of the hot coffee. But deep down, my tactical instincts were still humming. In my line of work, you learn that when a major criminal network collapses overnight, the vacuum created never stays empty for long.
My satellite phone vibrated in my pocket.
I pulled it out and stepped toward the window, looking at the caller ID. It was an unlisted, heavily encrypted number from Washington D.C.
I answered it. "Colonel Vance."
"Sarah," a deep, unfamiliar voice spoke through the speaker, low and authoritative. "Congratulations on taking down Apex Holdings. You did the Department of Justice a massive favor."
My eyes narrowed. "Who is this?"
"My name is Director Vance—no relation," the man replied with a dry chuckle. "I head the Homeland Security Task Force on Domestic Corruption. We’ve been monitoring Evelyn Vance’s operations for three years, but we could never break her legal shield. You broke it in twelve hours."
"I was protecting my daughter," I said coldly. "I'm not interested in accolades."
"I know," Director Vance said. "Which is why you need to know something that didn't show up on Major Thomas's hard drive."
May you like
I felt a subtle chill creep back down my spine. "What are you talking about?"
"Evelyn Vance wasn't the top of the pyramid, Sarah," Director Vance said, his tone turning deadly serious. "Apex Holdings was just a regional subsidiary. The real syndicate operating out of Washington has just realized that a U.S. Army Colonel has access to their entire Eastern Seaboard land registry. And they’ve already dispatched a team to Charlotte to retrieve it."
