Zero nine

Chapter 5

The air in the hospital room burned like toxic gas. Blackmail. The lowest, most cowardly tactic in a predator's arsenal. Julian Vance knew he couldn't beat me in a court of law, and he couldn't intimidate me with his mother’s money, so he was resorting to psychological terrorism, aiming straight for my daughter's dignity.

"Mom... what am I going to do?" Maya wept, hiding her face in her hands. "If those videos get out... I’ll never be able to show my face anywhere. My career, my life... everything will be ruined!"

I grabbed Maya’s hands, forcing her to look into my eyes. My voice was absolute steel, free of any hesitation or fear.

"Look at me, Maya," I commanded softly. "You have done nothing wrong. You are the victim of a monster, and nothing he does will ever make you less than who you are. He thinks he can use shame to control us. But shame only works if you hide in the dark. We are bringing everything into the light."

I pulled out my phone and dialed Marcus Vance—Julian’s older brother, the sleek, arrogant sociopath who had stood in the doorway earlier and mocked my daughter. He was the administrator of the family’s private digital networks and media servers.

He picked up on the third ring. "Well, if it isn't the brave Colonel. Have you reconsidered our offer, or are you ready to watch your daughter’s reputation turn to ash?"

"Marcus," I said, my voice eerily calm, smooth as butter. "I am standing in Maya’s room right now. You have five minutes to delete every cloud backup, every hard drive, and every file containing images or video of my daughter."

Marcus laughed—a dry, grating sound that filled the room. "Or what, Sarah? You’ll hit me with a military command? You have no jurisdiction over my personal servers. They're hosted on private, off-shore cloud domains in Switzerland. You can't touch them."

"I don't need jurisdiction," I said. "I have something better. I have your former head of IT sitting in a federal holding cell right now, giving the FBI the master decryption keys to your Swiss servers as part of his plea deal."

Silence on the other end. The smug laughter instantly died.

"What did you say?" Marcus’s voice dropped, the arrogance vanishing.

"You thought your family’s cyber security was impenetrable," I continued, pacing slowly by the window. "But six months ago, when you transferred money from Apex Holdings to buy those servers, you used a compromised network route that intercepted military communications. The cyber warfare division at Fort Liberty tracked the IP address back to your personal mansion in South Park."

This was a partial bluff—a tactical deception. The military cyber division hadn't officially seized the servers yet, but with Major Thomas’s drive, the FBI was executing emergency warrants at that exact second.

"You're lying," Marcus snarled, though his voice cracked slightly.

"Check your server status, Marcus," I said coldly.

Two seconds of dead silence stretched over the line. I could hear the panicked clicking of a keyboard in the background. Then came a sharp, muffled curse from Marcus.

"You... you crazy bitch..." he breathed, realizing his servers were being remote-wiped and seized by federal cyber-crime units in real time under the National Security Act.

"That was your first warning," I said. "Now here is your second: If Julian doesn't turn himself in to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police within two hours, I won't just destroy your family’s wealth. I will personally come to your residence, and I will show you what twenty-five years of Special Operations training looks like when applied to a coward."

I hung up before he could respond.

Maya looked at me, her eyes wide with a mixture of shock and awe. "Mom... did you really just wipe his servers?"

"The FBI did," I said, offering a small, razor-sharp smile. "I just provided the motivation."

At that moment, Detective Vance walked into the room, holding a printed arrest warrant stamped with the gold seal of the State of North Carolina.

"It’s official," Vance announced, a triumphant grin on her face. "Judge Sterling's replacement judge just signed an emergency arrest warrant for Julian Vance for aggravated felony assault, kidnapping, and witness intimidation. No bail."

"Where is he?" I asked instantly.

"Our tracking unit just located his sports car," Vance replied, her eyes narrowing. "He’s at the family's private estate in the gated community of Quail Hollow. But he’s not alone. He’s barricaded himself inside with his brother Marcus and four heavily armed private security guards. They’re claiming private property rights and refusing to let local police cross the gate."

I checked my tactical watch. It was 0145 hours. The rain outside was slacking, turning into a cold, eerie mist.

"Local police won't want a bloodbath on private property," I said, putting on my heavy tactical jacket. "They'll try to negotiate for hours, giving him time to escape on a private jet from Charlotte-Douglas Airport."

"What are you going to do, Sarah?" Vance asked, her brow furrowing with concern. "You can't raid a private estate by yourself. That's illegal!"

May you like

I looked at Vance, then back at my daughter, whose eyes were filled with ultimate trust.

"I’m not raiding it alone," I said softly. "I'm bringing the U.S. Army."
