Zero nine

Chapter 14

The sound of police sirens echoed up from Park Avenue, growing louder by the second. Below the seventy-story tower, dozens of federal law enforcement vehicles, FBI tactical units, and New York Police Department cruisers were blockading the surrounding streets.

Director Vance’s federal task force was executing the largest corporate raid in American history.

Inside the penthouse office, Victoria Cross sat motionless behind her glass desk. Her empire, built over three decades of shadow warfare, bribery, and international manipulation, had collapsed in a single evening. The woman who had commanded private armies and manipulated world markets now looked small, fragile, and utterly broken.

The heavy mahogany doors of the office burst open again. This time, it wasn't an intruder.

A squad of ten FBI tactical operators, clad in heavy black body armor and helmets, flooded into the room with their rifles raised, led personally by Director Vance.

"CLEAR! CLEAR!" the agents shouted, securing the room, kicking away the unconscious bodyguard's weapon, and establishing a perimeter.

Director Vance stepped through the doorway, taking off his wet trench coat. He looked at the ruined carpet, the bullet-riddled leather couch, and then at me standing calmly near the glass desk. He let out a long, incredulous breath.

"Sarah," Director Vance said, shaking his head with awe. "When you told me you were coming to New York, I thought you were setting up a defensive perimeter."

"The best defense is an absolute offense, Director," I replied, holstering my suppressed handgun.

Director Vance stepped up to the glass desk, pulling out a thick stack of federal arrest warrants stamped with the seal of the United States Federal Court.

"Victoria Cross," Director Vance declared, his voice echoing through the silent office. "You are under arrest for federal racketeering, treason, conspiracy to commit murder, and financing international terrorism. You have the right to remain silent..."

Two federal agents stepped forward, pulling Victoria out of her executive chair and snapping steel handcuffs around her wrists. Victoria didn't say a word. She didn't look at her lawyers or her tablet. She only stared at me with an expression of pure, unadulterated defeat as she was led out of the office in restraints.

Director Vance walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out at the glittering lights of Manhattan through the rain.

"Her entire network is collapsing," Director Vance reported, turning back to me. "Federal agents are currently raiding Sterling-Cross offices in London, Geneva, and Washington. The Board is completely dismantled. The Vance family, Apex Holdings, Sovereign Group... it’s all gone, Sarah. Every single person who touched this conspiracy is behind bars or facing federal indictment."

I took a deep breath, feeling a profound sense of closure finally settle over my shoulders. The long war that had started with a desperate phone call from a hospital room in Charlotte was finally over.

"How is Maya?" I asked immediately.

Director Vance smiled warmly. "She’s at the hotel under heavy federal protection. She was the one who authorized the final data release that froze Victoria's accounts. The Director of the FBI wants to offer her an official commendation for her signals intelligence work."

"She doesn't want a commendation," I said, a faint smile touching my lips. "She just wants her life back."

"She’s got it back, Sarah," Vance said softly. "Thanks to you."

Twenty minutes later, I returned to the hotel room on 5th Avenue.

When I unlocked the door, Maya was standing by the window, looking out at the rain-slicked city streets. The monitors on the desk were dark, and the frequency scanner was silent.

When she turned around and saw me standing in the doorway—safe, uninjured, and free of the burden we had carried for months—she didn't say a word. She ran across the room and threw her arms around me.

I held my daughter close, wrapping my arms around her tightly, feeling the warmth of her breathing, the steady beat of her heart. The terror, the running, the safehouses, the dark shadows of corrupt elites—it was all behind us now.

"It's over, Mom?" Maya whispered into my shoulder, her voice shaking with emotion.

"It's over, sweetheart," I said gently, kissing the top of her head. "The entire syndicate is gone. We're safe."

Maya pulled back, looking up at me with tears of joy in her eyes. "Where do we go now?"

May you like

I looked out the window at the rain clearing away over the New York skyline, revealing the first light of dawn breaking through the clouds, casting a golden light over the city.

"Wherever you want, Maya," I said softly, taking her hand. "We go wherever you want."
