Zero nine

Chapter 7 - The Fall of the House of Vance

Z

The morning sun broke over the Denver skyline, casting a cold, brilliant golden glow across the floor-to-ceiling glass of the Vance Global executive floor. Down below on 17th Street, news vans were parked three deep, satellite dishes raised, reporters clamoring for any update on the biggest corporate murder and financial scandal in Colorado history.

I stood inside my office—the office that forty-eight hours ago had been raided by federal agents—wearing a pristine navy-blue tailored suit. The air felt different now. The suffocating weight of deceit that had hung over my life for five years had finally burned away, replaced by the sharp, terrifying clarity of complete control.

The door opened, and Marcus Mercer walked in, placing a fresh cup of black coffee on my desk alongside a thick bound financial report.

"The federal court in Denver just approved the emergency restructuring order," Marcus reported, sitting down in the leather armchair across from me. "Richard Vance's stock holdings have been permanently impounded by the Department of Justice. The board met at 7:00 AM this morning and unanimously voted to name you Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Vance Global Enterprises."

"Unanimously?" I asked, taking a sip of the coffee. "Even the directors who took Richard's bribes?"

"Those directors resigned thirty minutes ago to avoid federal obstruction charges," Marcus said with a faint, tight smile. "You hold ninety-two percent of the voting proxy now, Elena. You answer to no one."

I looked at the cover of the report. Vance Global Recovery Plan.

"What about the stock market reaction?" I asked.

"It opened down twelve percent at the bell," Marcus admitted. "Panicked retail investors selling off after the murder charges against Richard were leaked to the Wall Street Journal. But the moment we release the forensic accounting reports showing that the company's core assets were never compromised, and that Vanguard Defense is being indicted for corporate conspiracy, the stock will recover. Vanguard’s share price, on the other hand, collapsed sixty percent in pre-market trading."

"Good," I said coldly. "File civil lawsuits against Vanguard Defense for corporate espionage and damages today. Demand five hundred million."

"Already drafted," Marcus nodded. He paused, looking at me carefully. "There is one more legal matter you need to address today, Elena. The district attorney’s office is waiting downstairs. They need your final statement regarding Julian and Serena before formally filing the criminal indictments."

I set my coffee cup down. "Where are they?"

"Julian was discharged from the hospital under police guard two hours ago," Marcus said. "His nerve injuries are permanent—he’ll be walking with a cane for the rest of his life. He and Serena are currently in separate interrogation rooms at the Denver Police Headquarters, tearing each other to pieces through their public defenders."

"Get the car," I said, standing up and buttoning my suit jacket. "I want to deliver the divorce papers personally."

Twenty minutes later, Knox pulled the black SUV into the secure underground garage of the Denver Police Department. Accompanied by Marcus and two armed plainclothes detectives, I walked down the sterile concrete corridors of the holding facility.

The sound of my heels clicking against the linoleum echoed off the yellowed walls.

We stopped outside Interrogation Room B. Through the one-way mirror, I saw Julian sitting at a metal table. He looked broken—a pale shadow of the suave, handsome executive I had married five years ago. His hair was unwashed, he wore a oversized grey orange jumpsuit, and a heavy wooden cane rested against his metallic chair.

Beside him sat his mother, Evelyn, who was weeping hysterically into a handkerchief while his court-appointed attorney reviewed plea deal documents.

I opened the door and stepped inside.

Evelyn immediately gasped, sitting up straight. "Elena! Oh, thank God you're here! Please, talk to these officers! Tell them this is all a massive misunderstanding! Julian was manipulated by Richard! He was forced into everything!"

Julian slowly lifted his head. When his eyes met mine, a desperate, pathetic spark of hope flashed across his face.

"Elena..." Julian rasped, his voice cracking as he reached out a hand across the table. "Elena, baby... please. I was wrong. I know I was wrong! Richard threatened to ruin me if I didn't help him transfer those accounts! He forced me to sign those papers!"

I didn't say a word. I walked calmly over to the table and laid a thin blue folder directly in front of him.

"What's this?" Julian asked, his voice shaking.

"Your final, absolute divorce decree," Marcus Mercer stated, stepping up beside me. "Under Colorado law, due to your conviction for felony fraud, medical abuse, and corporate grand larceny, the court has granted Elena a immediate, fault-based dissolution of marriage. You receive zero spousal support, zero marital assets, and zero equity."

"You can't do this!" Evelyn shrieked, jumping up from her chair. "He is your husband! You loved him!"

"I loved the man I thought he was," I said, looking at Evelyn with a look of cold pity. "The man sitting here is a criminal who allowed my uncle to abuse my body for two years with fake medical treatments while stealing my father's legacy."

Julian looked down at the divorce papers, his hands trembling violently. "Elena... please... I don't have money for a private defense lawyer. If I take this federal plea deal, I'm going to federal prison for fifteen years! My back... my legs... I won't survive in there!"

"Fifteen years is a generous sentence for what you did to me, Julian," I said, leaning down over the table, looking into his terrified eyes. "You spent two years watching me cry over negative pregnancy tests, knowing you had a vasectomy. You let me inject synthetic hormones into my body while you were planning to run away to Europe with my brother's wife."

"She seduced me!" Julian sobbed, tears streaming down his face as he dropped all masculine dignity. "Serena planned the whole thing! She wanted your life, Elena! She wanted your clothes, your house, your position!"

"She's sitting in Interrogation Room A right now telling the prosecutor that you forced her into the affair by threatening to expose her gambling debts," I replied with a tight, cruel smile. "You two truly were made for each other."

I slid a pen across the metal table.

"Sign the divorce papers, Julian. Or I instruct Marcus to pull our consent for the reduced plea deal, and the DA will seek the maximum sentence of thirty years for corporate treason."

Julian looked at the pen, then at his weeping mother, and finally at me. He realized there was no exit left. No clever lie, no charm, no manipulation could save him now.

With shaking fingers, he grabbed the pen and signed his name across the line.

"It's over," Marcus said, picking up the signed document and stamping it with a legal seal.

I turned around and walked toward the door.

"Elena! Wait!" Julian cried out, struggling to stand up, his cane slipping on the linoleum floor as he fell back into his metal chair with a grunt of physical agony. "Please! Don't leave me like this! What am I supposed to do now?!"

I paused at the heavy steel door, my hand resting on the handle. I looked back over my shoulder one last time at the broken man who had tried to destroy me.

May you like

"You reap what you sow, Julian," I said softly. "Enjoy your new life."

I pulled the door open and walked out, leaving his screams echoing down the concrete hall.
