Chapter 6 - The Reckoning in Aspen

The pneumatic locks on the vault door released with a loud hiss, heavy steel retracting into the reinforced doorframe. Knox immediately drew his sidearm, taking a tactical point position as we stepped out into the dimly lit subterranean hallway.

Above us, the chalet was in absolute chaos. Shouting, frantic footsteps, and the shattering of glassware echoed down the grand spiral staircase.

"We need to move before his private security realizes the system has crashed!" Knox urged, motioning for me to stay behind him.

"I'm not leaving without facing him, Knox," I said, clutching the encrypted drive containing the murder video and corporate evidence tightly in my palm.

We bounded up the carpeted stairs, emerging into the grand atrium.

The scene was pure bedlam. Dozens of high-society guests were rushing toward the main exits in terror. Board members were screaming into their mobile phones, demanding their personal attorneys, while the representatives from Vanguard Defense were furiously packing their briefcases, trying to distance themselves from the unfolding scandal before federal authorities arrived.

In the center of the room, standing beneath the massive iron chandelier, was Uncle Richard.

His face was ghostly pale, his age suddenly showing in every deep wrinkle of his skin. He was staring up at the massive eighty-inch display mounted above the stone fireplace. The black-and-white video of my father’s final agonizing moments was playing on a continuous loop, the tragic betrayal illuminated for all to see.

Brandon was standing near the fireplace, holding off two confused security guards who no longer knew who was paying their salaries. The moment Brandon saw me emerge from the staircase, he broke away and rushed to my side.

"Elena!" Brandon breathed, his eyes wide with horror as he looked at the screen. "Is that... did he really..."

"He let Dad die, Brandon," I said, my voice trembling with suppressed rage. "He watched him suffer and kicked the medicine out of his reach."

Brandon’s face contorted in absolute heartbreak and fury. He turned toward Richard, taking three aggressive steps forward, but I placed a firm hand on his chest, stopping him.

"No, Brandon," I said coldly. "Physical violence is what they expect from us. We are going to destroy him systematically."

Richard turned slowly to face us. His expensive tailored tuxedo seemed to hang loosely off his frame now. The air of absolute untouchability he had cultivated for decades was completely gone.

"Elena..." Richard stammered, holding up his trembling hands. "Listen to me... the video... it’s a deepfake! It's an AI manipulation created by Vanguard to divide our family!"

"Save it for the grand jury, Richard," I said, stepping toward him as the crowd of remaining board members parted around us. "The video file carries a certified digital timestamp from five years ago, embedded with your personal encrypted security key from your private servers."

"You have ruined this family!" Richard suddenly shrieked, dropping all pretense of innocence as his eyes bulged with mad desperation. "I built Vance Global! Your father was going to give it away to charity! He was going to dilute our shares! I saved this company!"

"You didn't save anything," I replied, my voice echoing off the high timber ceilings. "You infected it. You used Julian to steal from me, you weaponized my medical trauma against me, and you murdered my father to take a crown that was never yours."

Sirens began to wail in the distance—the high-pitched screech of multiple law enforcement vehicles ascending the icy mountain road toward the Red Mountain estate.

Marcus Mercer stepped out from the library room, holding his satellite phone aloft.

"The Pitkin County Sheriff, the Denver FBI Field Office, and Agent Hayes from the SEC are at the front gates, Richard," Marcus announced formally. "I have personally delivered the unredacted digital evidence package to the United States Attorney General. They have issued an emergency federal arrest warrant for aggravated first-degree murder, corporate espionage, and grand treason."

Richard looked around the room wildly, looking for a single ally among the board members he had bribed and controlled for years. Every single one of them turned their backs on him, moving toward the exits to save themselves.

Panic seized him. Richard lunged toward his oak desk where a hidden drawer was half-open, reaching for a small snub-nosed revolver.

"Gun!" Knox shouted, raising his sidearm.

Before Richard could grab the weapon, Brandon leaped forward, tackling our uncle across the heavy mahogany desk. The desk collapsed under their weight, sending papers, crystal decanters, and the revolver crashing onto the hardwood floor. Knox darted in, kicking the gun safely away and pinning Richard’s arms behind his back with a knee to his spine.

Richard groaned in pain, his face pressed flat against the floor, sobbing pathetically as the front double doors were kicked open.

A dozen armed Federal Marshals and Pitkin County Sheriff deputies stormed into the chalet, weapons raised, tactical flashlights cutting through the ambient light.

"Federal agents! Don't move! Hands where we can see them!" the lead Marshal shouted.

Agent Sarah Hayes stepped through the threshold, flanked by two senior FBI agents. She took in the scene—the looping murder video on the giant screen, the collapsed desk, the bound Vice Chairman on the floor, and me standing in the center of the room with the encrypted flash drive in my hand.

Agent Hayes walked directly over to me. She looked up at the video screen, watching Richard kick the pill bottle away, her stern face darkening with profound disgust.

She turned to her deputies. "Take Richard Vance into federal custody. High-risk transport. No bail."

Two deputies hauled Richard to his feet, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists. As they dragged him past me, Richard looked at me with pure venom.

"You think you've won, Elena?" Richard spat, blood trickling from his lip. "The company is ruined! The stock will crash to zero tomorrow morning! You have nothing left!"

"I have my father's honor back, Richard," I said, looking him dead in the eye without a trace of fear. "And Vance Global will rise from your ashes."

As they pulled Richard out into the freezing mountain air, Agent Hayes turned to me, pulling out her notebook. She clicked her pen, looking at me with a rare expression of professional respect.

"Miss Vance," Agent Hayes said softly. "It appears my division owed you a massive apology. The SEC charges against you are being dropped immediately. However... we still have the matter of your husband, Julian, and his co-conspirator, Serena."

"What about them?" I asked, taking a deep breath.

"Julian has just regained consciousness at Saint Anthony Medical Center," Hayes revealed. "And when he learned that Richard’s assets were frozen and his payout was gone, he offered to give a full state's evidence confession against Serena, Vanguard Defense, and Richard—in exchange for a reduced sentence."

I let out a cold, bitter laugh. "Julian is turning on Serena to save his own skin?"

"Naturally," Hayes replied. "He's claiming she was the one who procured the industrial adhesive to trap him into the affair."

I looked at Brandon, whose eyes were filled with a mixture of profound grief and absolute closure.

"Let them tear each other apart in court, Agent Hayes," I said, turning toward the glass windows as the first light of dawn began to peek over the snow-capped mountains of Aspen. "Because when I go back to Denver tomorrow, I’m taking back everything they tried to steal from me."
