Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

Late that night, while Clara and Toby slept peacefully in the hotel suite, Sarah Vance and I met with a private intelligence investigator named David Vance—an ex-CIA financial investigator who specialized in unraveling high-level money laundering networks.
We sat in the dimly lit conference room of Sarah’s law firm, surrounded by whiteboards covered in organizational charts, corporate flowcharts, and banking records.
"Your father was far deeper in debt than you ever imagined, Andrew," David said, tossing a thick black binder onto the glass table. "Three years ago, Richard made a series of illegal short-bets on the foreign exchange market using leveraged capital from shady private lenders in Eastern Europe. He lost over fourteen million dollars in less than forty-eight hours."
I rubbed my temples, trying to process the magnitude of the madness. "Fourteen million? Where did he get that kind of money?"
"He took out secret high-interest loans using your mother’s family estate as collateral, which he lost," David explained, turning a page in the binder. "When those lenders came collecting, Richard was desperate. That’s when Marcus Thorne stepped in. Thorne bought out Richard’s debt from those loan sharks, effectively holding your father by the throat."
"So Thorne was blackmailing him," Sarah noted, her eyes narrowing.
"Exactly," David nodded. "Thorne told Richard that if he didn't deliver the core encryption architecture of Vanguard Digital Security, Thorne would enforce the debt and strip Richard of everything he owned, publicly exposing him as a fraud. Richard didn't just want your money, Andrew. He needed your company to save himself from going to a federal penitentiary or worse."
"And Natalie?" I asked. "Where did she fit into this?"
"Natalie knew everything," David revealed, pulling up a series of encrypted text messages on the main monitor. "She wasn't a victim or a pawn. She actively helped set up the shell companies. In fact, she was negotiating a separate side deal with Thorne. She offered to give Thorne Clara’s personal identity documents so Thorne could use her name to open fraudulent offshore accounts, making Clara look like the ringleader of an international financial crime syndicate."
The sheer evil of it left me speechless. They weren't just trying to take my money; they were willing to frame an innocent, pregnant woman and send her to federal prison for decades, destroying her life, her reputation, and her children's future, just to cover up Richard's gambling debts.
"There's one more thing, Andrew," David added quietly, looking at me with a serious expression. "Regarding Clara's background."
I raised an eyebrow. "What about Clara?"
"When your mother and sister started making comments about Clara being a 'freeloading nobody from nowhere,' they were projecting," David said, sliding a certified birth record across the table. "Clara’s maiden name isn't just a simple rural name. Her late mother was Eleanor Vance-Montgomery—the sole heiress to the Montgomery Steel fortune."
I stared at the document in shock. "What?"
"Clara’s mother was disowned by her family thirty years ago when she chose to marry a simple high school teacher—Clara's father," David explained. "When Eleanor passed away six months ago, she left behind a dormant, uncontested trust worth nearly forty-five million dollars. Clara is the sole legal beneficiary of that trust. The paperwork was finalized last month, but the notification letters were sent to your home address while you were in Chicago."
I felt a sudden, sickening realization wash over me. "They intercepted the mail."
"Yes," Sarah chimed in, her voice cold. "Natalie intercepted the trust notification letters. They realized that Clara was about to inherit a fortune larger than Vanguard Digital Security’s annual revenue. That’s why they moved in so aggressively while you were away. They wanted to break Clara psychologically, force her to sign away her legal rights, and declare her mentally unfit or criminally liable so they could seize control of the Montgomery Trust!"
I stood up slowly, my hands clenched so tight my knuckles turned white. The depth of their depravity was staggering. They had tortured my wife, abused my son, and treated her like trash, all while secretly plotting to steal forty-five million dollars that belonged to her.
"They thought she was powerless," I whispered, a dark, dangerous smile creeping onto my face. "They thought she had nobody to protect her."

"What do you want to do, Andrew?" Sarah asked.
"I want the grand jury indictment finalized by tomorrow morning," I declared. "And I want Marcus Thorne, Richard, and Natalie tried together in open court. Let the world see every filthy secret they tried to hide."
