Chapter 4 - Blood in the Water

The board room on the 40th floor of the Vanguard Building was bathed in the red glow of the late afternoon sunset. Twelve of the most powerful tech investors and defense contractors in the country sat around the massive glass conference table, whispering nervously among themselves.

I stood at the head of the table, wearing a crisp black suit, my laptop connected to the giant central display screens. On my right sat Sarah Vance; on my left sat Special Agent Raymond from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Financial Crimes Division.

When the clock struck 4:00 PM, I didn't bother with pleasantries. I pressed a single key on my laptop.

The room went dark, and the large screens flickered to life. Instantly, clear, high-definition video feeds filled the room. The board members gasped as they saw Richard Sterling and Natalie Sterling caught on audio and video, discussing the illicit transfer of proprietary security protocols to Apex Cybernetics.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the board," I began, my voice echoing through the silent room. "For the past month, my family—specifically my father, Richard, and my sister, Natalie—attempted to execute a hostile internal takeover of Vanguard Digital Security. They used extortion, forgery, and physical abuse against my wife to force my compliance."

A murmur of shock swept across the room. One of the senior board members, Arthur Vance (no relation to Sarah), leaned forward, his face pale. "Andrew... this is horrifying. But what about the security algorithms? Have our federal defense contracts been compromised?"

"No," I replied firmly. "Because I anticipated their moves. Every piece of code my father downloaded was a dummy file—a honeypot laced with tracking software. The moment Richard sent those files to Marcus Thorne at Apex Cybernetics, Thorne's entire server network was infected with an automated forensic tracer."

Special Agent Raymond stood up, adjusting his dark tie. "At three fifteen this afternoon, federal agents executed a raid on Apex Cybernetics' headquarters in downtown Denver. Marcus Thorne has been taken into custody for corporate espionage, theft of trade secrets, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The federal government has seized all of Apex's operational servers."

The board members burst into frantic discussion. The sheer scale of the operation was staggering. In less than twelve hours, I had not only exposed the traitors in my own bloodline, but I had also completely dismantled our greatest corporate competitor.

"What about your family, Andrew?" Arthur asked quietly. "What happens to them?"

"They are currently sitting in a county jail cell," I said without a trace of hesitation. "Their bail hearings are scheduled for tomorrow morning. My legal counsel has already filed formal motions to deny bail based on flight risk and witness tampering. I am formally asking the board to pass a resolution removing Richard Sterling from any honorary advisory roles and stripping Natalie Sterling of all minority shares instantly under our morality clause."

"Seconded," Arthur said immediately, raising his hand.

"All in favor?"

Every single hand in the room went up. Unanimous.

After the meeting adjourned, I walked out into the executive lobby. The high-stress corporate atmosphere felt distant, almost meaningless compared to what really mattered. I took the elevator down to the underground parking garage, got into my car, and drove directly to the hotel where Clara and Toby were staying.

When I knocked on the door of suite 504, it opened almost immediately. Clara stood there, dressed in a soft, comfortable sweater, her hand resting gently on her swollen belly. She looked exhausted, her eyes still red from crying, but when she saw me, a faint, genuine smile broke through her pale face.

"Daddy!" Toby cried out, running across the room and wrapping his small arms around my legs.

I sank to my knees, pulling my son into a tight embrace. I pulled the worn teddy bear out of my jacket pocket and handed it to him.

"Barnaby!" Toby gasped, his eyes wide with wonder. "You found him! Grandpa said he threw him in the trash!"

"Grandpa was wrong, buddy," I whispered, kissing the top of his head. "Nobody throws away what belongs to us. Ever again."

Toby ran back into the bedroom to play with his toys, leaving Clara and me standing in the doorway. She stepped closer to me, her hand reaching up to touch my cheek.

"Is it over?" she asked softly.

"The corporate side is over," I said, putting my arms around her waist, careful not to press against her bump. "The legal fight in court is just beginning. But they will never touch you again, Clara. I swear to you on my life."

Clara rested her head against my chest, listening to the steady beat of my heart. "I was so scared, Andrew. When your mother said you'd choose them over me... when she said I was just an outsider..."

"My mother is a monster," I said fiercely, leaning down to look her in the eyes. "You are my wife. You gave me my son, and you are carrying my daughter. You are my family, Clara. They mean nothing to me."

Just then, my phone vibrated in my pocket. I pulled it out and saw a message from Sarah Vance.

Andrew, you need to see this. Evelyn just requested an emergency meeting with the district attorney. She’s offering to testify against Richard and Natalie in exchange for immunity. The snake is eating its own tail.
