Chapter 10 - The Final Verdict

Forty-eight hours later, the storm had cleared, leaving behind a bright, crisp blue sky over Denver.
I stood inside Federal Courtroom 402 once again. Beside me sat Sarah Vance and Assistant US Attorney Victoria Vance. Clara was resting comfortably in her private hospital room with our newborn daughter and Toby, guarded by four federal marshals and my personal security team.
In the defense dock sat Richard Sterling, Natalie Sterling, and Marcus Thorne. Richard was bound in heavy waist chains, his face sunken, his pride completely shattered. Marcus Thorne looked broken, realizing his multi-billion-dollar corporate empire was being dismantled piece by piece by federal regulators.
The heavy wooden doors opened, and the jury filed back into the courtroom after less than ninety minutes of deliberation.
Judge Harold Vance took his seat on the bench and looked down at the jury foreperson.
"Has the jury reached a verdict?" Judge Vance asked.
"We have, Your Honor," the foreperson—a sharp-looking middle-aged woman—replied firmly.
She handed the official verdict sheets to the court bailiff, who passed them up to the judge. Judge Vance reviewed the documents, nodded slowly, and handed them back.
"Will the defendants please rise for the reading of the verdict," Judge Vance ordered.
Richard, Natalie, and Marcus Thorne stood up, flanked by their trembling attorneys.
"On Count One: Conspiracy to commit corporate espionage and theft of trade secrets," the foreperson read loudly. "We find the defendant, Marcus Thorne, GUILTY. We find the defendant, Richard Sterling, GUILTY."
"On Count Two: Grand larceny and wire fraud in the amount of three point eight million dollars," the foreperson continued. "We find the defendant, Richard Sterling, GUILTY. We find the defendant, Natalie Sterling, GUILTY."
"On Count Three: Felony child endangerment, criminal false imprisonment, and third-degree assault against Clara Sterling and Toby Sterling," the foreperson announced, her voice filled with unmistakable conviction. "We find the defendant, Richard Sterling, GUILTY on all counts. We find the defendant, Natalie Sterling, GUILTY on all counts."
A massive collective gasp, followed by cheers from the public gallery, echoed through the courtroom. Judge Vance slammed his gavel down three times to restore order.
"Silence in the court!" Judge Vance commanded. He turned his gaze to the defense table, his eyes filled with righteous indignation.
"In my thirty years on the federal bench," Judge Vance declared, looking directly at Richard Sterling, "I have rarely witnessed a display of moral depravity as sickening as what has been presented in this trial. You stripped your own flesh and blood of his dignity, you tortured a helpless pregnant woman, you starved a five-year-old child, and you sold out your son’s life’s work out of cowardly, pathetic greed."
Richard opened his mouth to speak, but Judge Vance cut him off instantly with a thunderous tone.
"Save your breath, Mr. Sterling. You will have plenty of time to ponder your actions. For the charges of felony child endangerment, kidnapping, and grand fraud, I sentence you, Richard Sterling, to thirty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole!"
Richard’s knees buckled, and he collapsed back into his chair, groaning in absolute despair.
"To defendant Natalie Sterling," Judge Vance continued, turning to my sister. "In light of your plea agreement and testimony, I sentence you to twelve years in a federal correctional facility, followed by mandatory restitution of two million dollars."
Natalie burst into uncontrollable wails, covering her face as federal marshals stepped forward to slap heavy leg irons onto her ankles.
"And to defendant Marcus Thorne," Judge Vance concluded coldly. "For corporate espionage, racketeering, and attempted obstruction of justice, I sentence you to twenty-five years in federal custody, and order the immediate liquidation of Apex Cybernetics to satisfy corporate damages owed to Vanguard Digital Security."
Judge Vance slammed his gavel down one final time. "Court is adjourned!"
As the marshals led the three convicts away in chains, Richard turned his head toward me one last time. Tears were streaming down his wrinkled face, his voice cracking with desperation.
"Andrew... please!" Richard whimpered, reaching out his chained hands. "I'm your father! Don't leave me to die in prison! Please... forgive me!"
I stood straight, adjusted my tie, and looked at him with complete indifference.

"I don't have a father," I said calmly. "My family is waiting for me at the hospital."
I turned my back on him forever and walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sunlight.
