Chapter 8 - The Matriarch’s Downfall

Evelyn stood at the foot of Elena’s hospital bed, flanked by two armed guards. The emerald silk gown she had worn to her ill-fated victory dinner was replaced by a sterile, coarse orange jumpsuit. Her hair, usually styled to perfection, was matted and graying at the roots. Yet, her posture remained haughty, her chin raised in stubborn defiance.
"You have five minutes, Mrs. Vance," the lead officer instructed, stepping back to guard the doorway.
Evelyn looked at me, then at Elena, her eyes gleaming with a mixture of hatred and desperation.
"I see you survived the night," Evelyn spat, her voice raspy. "And the bastard child lived too, I presume?"
I stood up slowly from my chair beside Elena’s bed, taking a step forward to block my mother’s view of my wife. "Watch your tongue, Evelyn. You're speaking about my son."
Evelyn let out a bitter, mocking laugh. "Your son? Or your father’s son, Daniel? Have you finally realized what kind of whore you married? She brought Croft to our doorstep! She ruined this family!"
"No, Evelyn," I replied coldly, pulling the certified copy of father’s journal from my pocket and holding it up in front of her face. "You ruined this family because of your own blind paranoia. My father never cheated on you. Elena is not his daughter. You spent twenty-five years hating an innocent child because Julian Croft manipulated your petty, insecure mind."
Evelyn froze. Her sharp eyes scanned the paper held in my hand. As she recognized her late husband's handwriting, her arrogant facade began to crumble. Her jaw quivered slightly.
"No..." she whispered, stepping back, her handcuffs rattling against each other. "No, Thomas lied... he was seeing her... I saw the hotel receipts..."
"He was paying for Sarah Miller’s safe house to protect her from Croft!" I shouted, my voice cutting through her delusions. "Dad was trying to stop Croft from destroying Vance Enterprises thirty years ago! But instead of trusting your husband, you let Croft convince you to help him steal from us!"
"I did it for Lucas!" she shrieked, tears finally spilling over her wrinkled cheeks. "Lucas needed help!"
"Lucas is going to federal prison for five years because of you!" I yelled back. "You fed his addictions, you validated his greed, and you used him as a pawn to hurt Elena! You forced my wife to kneel in dirty water with your foot on her shoulder because you wanted to feel like a queen! Well, look at your throne now, Evelyn!"
Evelyn sank back against the wall, her body trembling violently as the brutal reality of her actions hit her all at once. She had lost her fortune, her reputation, her freedom, and both of her sons.
"Daniel..." she whimpered, reaching out her cuffed hands toward me, her voice suddenly shrinking into that of a broken old woman. "Please... I’m your mother. You can’t let them lock me away. Tell the prosecutor it was all Croft’s fault. Use the family money... hire the best lawyers..."
I looked at her—the woman who had given me life, but had spent the last three months trying to destroy everything I built.
"The family money is no longer yours to touch," I said, my voice dead and cold. "As sole trustee, I have permanently severed your income interest under the felony forfeiture clause of father's trust. You will rely entirely on a public defender."
"You monster!" she screamed, her voice cracking with fury as the guards stepped forward to grab her arms. "I gave you everything! You're choosing that nameless orphan over your own blood!"
"I'm choosing my family," I repeated quietly, using the exact words I had spoken in the foyer four days ago.
The guards dragged Evelyn out of the room, her wild screams echoing down the corridor until the heavy double doors slammed shut, plunging the suite back into silence.

Elena reached out from the bed, taking my hand in hers. "Is it really over?"
"Not quite," I replied, looking out the window as the sun began to rise over the city. "There's still one last debt that needs to be settled."
