Chapter 6 - Bloodline Traitors

The damp chill of the vault seemed to follow me into the emergency room of St. Jude's Hospital. Sitting on the edge of an examination bed while a nurse stitched the deep cut on my cheekbone, my mind refused to let go of the photograph resting in my inner suit pocket.
My father. Croft. And Elena’s mother, Sarah Vance—formerly Sarah Miller—holding a newborn baby in a private hospital wing in 1999.
"You're lucky the bullet missed you, Mr. Vance," the nurse murmured, finishing the last suture and applying a clean bandage. "You can head out now, but you need to rest."
"Thank you," I said softly, stepping out into the sanitized corridor.
Priya Shah was waiting outside, pacing back and forth with two high-ranking detectives from the Manhattan White Collar Crime Unit.
"Croft isn't talking," Priya said the moment she saw me. "His attorneys have invoked his Fifth Amendment rights. But the FBI has already seized his personal servers. The evidence from the vault was more than enough to lock him away for enterprise corruption and attempted murder."
"What about Lucas?" I asked.
"He’s in holding," she replied gently. "He’s terrified, Daniel. He gave a full confession implicating your mother and Croft. In exchange for his testimony, the prosecutor is offering him a plea deal—five years in a medium-security facility."
I closed my eyes, taking a heavy breath. Five years for my little brother. A small price compared to what could have happened, but a tragic end to our family's legacy nonetheless.
"There's something else, Priya," I said, pulling the waterlogged photograph from my pocket and handing it to her. "Look at the date on the back."
Priya looked at the photo, her eyes widening in sheer disbelief as she read the handwritten text: October 14, 1999. Saint Agnes Maternity Ward.
"October 14th..." Priya whispered, looking up at me in horror. "Daniel... that's Elena's birthday."
"My father didn't just know Croft," I said, my voice barely audible in the quiet hallway. "He had an affair with Croft’s chief financial advisor—Elena's mother. Elena isn't just my wife..."
"Stop," Priya cut me off, grabbing my arm, her face pale. "Daniel, don't say it. You need to get a DNA test before you jump to conclusions."
"I don't need a test to know why my mother hated her so much," I realized, the horrifying puzzle pieces finally snapping together in my mind. "Evelyn didn't just abuse Elena because of the stolen money or Croft’s corporate espionage. She knew. She knew Elena was my father's illegitimate daughter."
The realization hit me like a physical blow. The silver basin. The humiliation. The desperate attempt to force Elena out of the house before the baby was born. Evelyn wasn't just protecting the family fortune; she was trying to destroy the living evidence of my father’s deepest betrayal.
I threw open the doors of the hospital lobby and ran to my car, driving frantically through the pouring rain back to the hotel penthouse. My heart was pounding like a sledgehammer against my ribs.
When I unlocked the penthouse door, the lights were dim.
Elena was sitting on the sofa, a blanket wrapped around her shoulders, staring silently out the window. She turned as I entered, her eyes red and swollen from hours of crying.
"Daniel," she whispered, standing up slowly, holding her pregnant stomach. "I heard on the news... they arrested Croft and Lucas. Are you okay? Your face..."
I didn't answer. I walked slowly across the room, pulled out the photograph, and laid it softly on the table in front of her.
"Do you know who this woman is, Elena?" I asked quietly.
Elena looked down at the image. She gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "That’s... that’s my mother. She passed away when I was ten. Where did you get this?"
"It fell out of Croft’s pocket in the vault," I said, my voice trembling. "Elena... who was your biological father?"
Elena looked at me, confused and terrified. "I told you... my father was an accountant in Chicago. He passed away from liver failure..."
"No," I cut her off gently, taking her trembling hands in mine. "Croft paid for his medical bills, didn't he? Because that man wasn't your biological father. He was hired to raise you."
Elena shook her head frantically, tears spilling over her lashes once more. "What are you talking about, Daniel? You're scaring me!"
"My father, Thomas Vance, was your biological father, Elena," I revealed, the truth tearing through my throat like broken glass. "We... we have the same father."
Elena froze, her eyes wide with unadulterated horror. She backed away from me, her chest heaving as panic seized her. "No... no, no, no! That's impossible! That's sick! Daniel, tell me you're lying! We're married! We're having a baby!"
She collapsed back onto the sofa, hyperventilating, clutching her baby bump in absolute agony.
Before I could reach out to comfort her, a sudden, sharp gasp escaped her lips. She bent over, her face contorting in unbearable pain.

A pool of fluid began to spread across the light fabric of her dress.
"Daniel..." she screamed, clutching her lower abdomen, her face slick with cold sweat. "The baby... something’s wrong! The baby’s coming!"
