Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Past

The silence in the penthouse suite was suffocating, broken only by the ragged sound of Elena's weeping. I stood over her, looking down at the woman I had spent the last three years loving, protecting, and worshipping. The woman carrying my son. Every memory, every shared laugh, every late-night conversation we had ever had suddenly felt like a scripted lie designed by a rival hedge fund manager.

"How much did Croft pay you?" I asked, my voice dead and emotionless.

"Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars," Elena sobbed, gripping her stomach as if in physical pain. "It was five years ago, Daniel! Long before I ever met you! My father was dying of liver failure in Chicago. He needed a transplant, and insurance wouldn't cover it. I was desperate! I was twenty-four years old, drowning in medical debt, and Croft offered me a way out!"

"By infiltrating my father's company," I stated cold-bloodedly.

"No! I was hired as a low-level junior consultant for Croft’s asset management firm," she cried out, looking up at me with eyes filled with raw agony. "He sent me to audit public real estate filings. I didn't even know Vance Enterprises was his target until three months into the job. And the moment I met you at that art gallery—the moment I realized who you were—I quit Croft’s firm immediately! I refused to take another dime from him!"

"And you never thought to tell me?" I slammed my hand onto the marble counter, making her flinch. "You let my mother hold this over your head! You let her degrade you, humiliate you, make you kneel on the floor like a servant in my own house—all because you were terrified I’d find out about your secret?!"

"She threatened to ruin you, Daniel!" Elena screamed through her tears. "When your mother found out three months ago, she showed me the original contract with Croft's signature! She told me if I said a word to you, she would release it to the press, frame you as a co-conspirator in Croft’s insider trading ring, and make sure you lost custody of our baby the moment he was born! I swallowed my pride, I took her abuse, I let her walk all over me... because I was trying to save you from her!"

I stumbled back, hit by the crushing weight of her words. The silver basin. The foot on her shoulder. The forced silence. Elena hadn't been a passive victim of a cruel mother-in-law; she had been enduring emotional and physical torture to shield me from a scandal that would have destroyed my career before I even took control of the company.

Before I could reach out to pull her off the floor, my phone chimed with an emergency notification from my chief security officer.

Alert: Security breach at the main repository vault in Vance Tower. Unidentified personnel using revoked executive access codes.

My heart dropped. "Lucas," I muttered.

I knelt down, grabbed Elena by the shoulders, and pulled her gently to her feet, ignoring the broken mug shards around us. I wiped a tear from her cheek with my thumb.

"Stay here. Lock the doors. Don't answer for anyone except Priya," I commanded softly.

"Daniel, where are you going?" she asked, clutching my jacket.

"My brother isn't in a jail cell," I realized, pulling up the live police scanner on my phone. "My mother’s lawyer posted his emergency bail an hour ago. He's at the tower trying to erase the original trust ledgers before the FBI finishes processing the hard drives."

I stormed out of the hotel, throwing myself into my car, and tore through the rain-drenched streets of downtown.

When I arrived at Vance Tower, the lobby was eerily quiet. The night guards were missing from their desks. I took the private executive elevator directly to the sub-basement archive level—the vault where forty years of physical company deeds, original trust documents, and private contracts were stored.

The heavy steel vault door was standing half-a-foot ajar. Light spilled out into the dark hallway.

I pulled a heavy tactical flashlight from the emergency wall kit, stepped through the heavy door, and stopped dead in his tracks.

The vault was ransacked. File cabinets were dragged open, paper strewn everywhere across the concrete floor. Standing in the center of the room, holding a lighter over a stack of yellowing paper, was Lucas.

Next to him stood a man in a dark trench coat holding a silver-plated hand gun pointed directly at my chest.

It was Julian Croft.

"Hello, Daniel," Croft said, his lips curling into a cold, cruel grin. "You always were the smart son. Too bad you walked into this party uninvited."
