Zero nine

Chapter 8 - The Confession

“Come in, Erin,” Richard Sterling said smoothly, stepping aside to let me enter the opulent foyer. Marble floors glistened under a massive crystal chandelier, a striking contrast to the suffocating evil lurking within the walls.

Judith sat in the living room on a velvet sofa, an ankle monitor visible beneath her loose silk trousers. She looked up, her expression a mix of venom and smug satisfaction.

“Have you come to beg?” Judith sneered, sipping espresso from a delicate porcelain cup. “Because after what you did to Blake—leaving my poor boy in that filthy prison—there is no mercy left for you.”

I walked into the center of the room, keeping my hands visible and my posture calm. “I didn't come to beg, Judith. I came to negotiate.”

Richard chuckled, leaning against a grand piano and folding his arms. “Negotiate? You have no leverage, Erin. By two o’clock today, the federal court will freeze Caldwell Restoration’s accounts based on the corruption evidence I filed. You’ll be broke, the company will collapse, and Blake will be released on appeal due to compromised evidence.”

“You mean the break-in at my father’s cabin last night?” I asked, raising an eyebrow. “Your hired thug didn't find what he was looking for, Richard.”

Richard’s smile tightened slightly, though he quickly recovered his composure. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

I unzipped my handbag and pulled out a single photocopied document, tossing it onto the glass coffee table in front of Judith.

It was a copy of the toxicologist report from the night my father died.

Judith’s eyes scanned the page, and all the color instantly drained from her face. She dropped her espresso cup, sending brown liquid splashing across the pristine white rug. “Where... where did you get this?” she stammered.

Richard walked over, snatching the paper off the table. As he read the header, his jaw clenched, the arrogance draining from his eyes.

“My father knew you were poisoning him, Judith,” I said, my voice echoing with terrifying calm. “He knew you were slipping digitalis into his evening tea. And he kept a full record of the financial pipeline Richard used to launder city bribes through Caldwell Restoration.”

Richard crumpled the paper in his fist, his breath hitching. “This is a fake. It’s a desperate forgery.”

“It’s on an encrypted drive currently sitting in the District Attorney’s office,” I countered lied smoothly, playing my card. “And right now, Marcus Vance is preparing murder charges against both of you. Unless...”

Richard stepped toward me, his eyes narrowing. “Unless what?”

“Unless you sign a full confession regarding the financial fraud,” I said, looking him dead in the eye. “You take the fall for the money laundering. You grant me a full, uncontested divorce from Blake, surrender all company claims, and leave Judith out of the murder charge. In exchange, I keep the toxicology report out of the press.”

Richard let out a harsh, bitter laugh. “You think you can play grandmaster with me, little girl? You think your pathetic father was smart?”

He stepped closer, his face inches from mine, his cold breath brushing my cheek.

“Your father was a naive fool,” Richard sneered, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “He thought he could build a multi-million-dollar empire in this city without playing by our rules. When he threatened to go to the authorities, he signed his own death warrant. Judith didn't even have to slip him much—just three drops a day in his scotch. His heart was so weak it barely took two weeks.”

Judith gasped in horror. “Richard, shut up!”

But Richard was too drunk on his own arrogance, consumed by years of untouchable power. “And as for you, Erin,” he continued, reaching out and grabbing my jaw tightly, his fingers digging into the bruise Blake had left. “You should have signed the proxy. Now, you’re going to suffer the exact same fate as your father.”

I didn't flinch. I didn't pull away. I simply looked up at him and smiled.

“Thank you, Richard,” I said clearly into the air. “Did you catch all of that, Lena?”

Richard’s eyes went wide with sudden, sickening realization. He released my jaw, stumbling back a step.

Before he could react, the heavy oak front doors of the penthouse were smashed open with a deafening crash.
