Chapter 14 - Structural Collapse

Z
Blinding white light and thunderous booms filled the subterranean chamber. Smoke billowed through the air as federal SWAT officers swarmed the vault, their laser sights cutting through the haze.
“POLICE! DROP TO THE GROUND! DROP IT NOW!”
Vance’s eyes went wide with shock, but instead of surrendering, his survival instinct kicked into hyperdrive. He grabbed the red binder and the laptop off the table, lunging sideways toward an unlit service tunnel that led deeper into the courthouse sub-basement.
“Erin, get down!” Lena shouted, charging into the room with her weapon drawn.
I dived behind a thick concrete partition as gunfire erupted. Vance fired twice behind him with a concealed handgun, the bullets ricocheting wildly off the steel columns with sharp, terrifying metallic zips.
One of the stray rounds struck an exposed high-pressure hydraulic line attached to a temporary construction jack supporting the ceiling beam overhead.
A sickening, high-pitched screech of tearing metal echoed through the cavernous space.
The compromised steel column above us—the very pillar Vance had compromised years ago—began to groan under the sudden shift in weight. Cracks spider-webbed across the surrounding concrete ceiling, showering the room with dust and heavy debris.
“The structure is failing!” a SWAT officer yelled. “EVACUATE! EVACUATE NOW!”
“Erin!” Lena screamed, running toward my position through the falling rubble.
Vance was scrambling through the dust toward the emergency ladder leading up to the street, clutching the stolen laptop. But as the ceiling groaned again, a massive section of concrete overhead broke loose, crashing down directly into his path and trapping his leg under hundreds of pounds of debris.
Vance let out an agonizing shriek of pain, dropping the laptop as he writhed on the dusty floor. “Help me! Please! It’s crushing me!”
The entire room was trembling now, dust blinding us as the compromised steel beams warped under the immense stress.
“Erin! We have to go!” Lena shouted, grabbing my arm and pulling me toward the main exit.
I looked back at Vance, who was screaming in sheer terror as more concrete rained down around him. Despite everything he had done—despite poisoning my father and trying to destroy my life—I couldn't just watch a man be buried alive.
“Help me with him!” I yelled to Lena.
“He tried to kill you!” Lena argued over the deafening roar of the collapsing structure.
“I’m not him!” I shouted back.
Together, Lena and I sprinted back into the collapsing vault. Working with two brave SWAT officers, we used a heavy steel crowbar from a nearby tool rack to lever the massive concrete slab off Vance’s crushed leg.

Vance sobbed in agony as we dragged him out from under the rubble, pulling him across the dusty floor just as a massive section of the ceiling caved in right where he had been trapped seconds before.
We dragged him out through the exploding dust into the storm drain exit, bursting into the rainy street just as the lower vault collapsed completely behind us with a thunderous roar that shook the pavement under our feet.
