Chapter 8 - The Trial of Public Opinion

By eight o'clock the following morning, the tabloid headlines were vicious.

NURSE FROM THE SLUMS TRICKS DYING BILLIONAIRE! read the front page of a prominent gossip rag, accompanied by a blurred, unflattering photo of Elena leaving her apartment. Another scandal blog published leaked excerpts of the three-year-old divorce documents, claiming Elena had driven her late husband to despair before seizing control of his family's fortune.

When Elena arrived at St. Jude's Memorial Hospital for her shift, the atmosphere in the breakroom was heavy with awkward tension.

Her fellow nurses, people she had worked alongside for years, offered tight smiles and nervous nods. Some were whispering in corners, holding their phones and looking at the news articles.

Elena walked straight to her locker, hung up her coat, and pulled out her medical scrubs.

"Elena?"

She turned around to see Sarah, her closest friend on the nursing staff, standing in the doorway with two cups of coffee.

"Are you okay?" Sarah asked softly, handing her a cup. "I saw the news this morning. It's horrible what they're writing about you."

"They're lies, Sarah," Elena said quietly, taking a sip of the warm coffee. "Manipulated facts pushed by people who lost their stolen wealth."

"I know that," Sarah smiled warmly, stepping in to give her a quick hug. "We all know you, Elena. You've worked double shifts to buy toys for the pediatric ward. You've stayed late holding the hands of dying patients who had no family left. No tabloid article can change who you are to us."

Elena felt a lump form in her throat. "Thank you, Sarah. I needed to hear that today."

Before they could continue, the head nurse, a stern woman named Mrs. Gable, stepped into the breakroom.

"Elena," Mrs. Gable said coldly, her hands resting on her hips. "The Chief of Medicine wants to see you in his office immediately."

Sarah shot Elena a worried glance, but Elena simply nodded. She put her coffee down, straightened her scrub top, and walked down the long, linoleum-tiled hall toward the executive wing of the hospital.

When she stepped into Dr. Marcus Vance’s office, she wasn't surprised to see who was sitting in the leather chair across from him.

It was Evelyn Vance—the Whitmore family's former attorney, and, as Elena had recently learned, Dr. Vance's older sister.

"Mrs. Callahan," Dr. Vance said, leaning back in his desk chair with a somber expression. "Please, sit."

Elena remained standing. "I'll stand, Dr. Vance. I assume this isn't about my patient load for the day."

"Regrettably, no," Dr. Vance said, sighing. "The board of directors of St. Jude's has expressed deep concern regarding the recent media coverage surrounding your personal affairs. The hospital's reputation is paramount, Mrs. Callahan. Having a staff nurse embroiled in a high-profile corporate embezzlement and inheritance scandal is creating an unwanted distraction."

"Distraction?" Elena said, her eyes narrowing. "Or is it because my presence threatens the corporate donations your sister's legal clients used to funnel into this hospital?"

Dr. Vance's face flushed slightly, while Evelyn Vance offered a tight, smug smile from her chair.

"We are placing you on unpaid administrative leave effective immediately," Dr. Vance stated coldly, ignoring her comment. "Pending an internal review of your conduct."

"On what grounds?" Elena demanded. "I haven't committed a single professional infraction in seven years!"

"You are a PR liability, Mrs. Callahan," Evelyn Vance chimed in, standing up and smoothing her skirt. "Public perception matters. A nurse accused of financial elder abuse and marriage fraud is not someone patients want at their bedside."

Elena looked at Evelyn, then at Dr. Vance. She realized then that this was Richard's final attempt to destroy her—to take away her career, her livelihood, her very identity, just as he had threatened David three years ago.

Slowly, Elena pulled her hospital ID badge off her scrub top.

"You don't need to place me on leave, Dr. Vance," Elena said, her voice completely calm, devoid of fear. "I resign."

Evelyn blinked, caught off guard by the response. "You resign?"

"Yes," Elena said, placing her badge firmly on Dr. Vance's desk. "Because as of ten minutes ago, the Whitmore Trust officially completed the purchase of sixty percent of the primary debt bonds for St. Jude's Memorial Hospital. Which means, Dr. Vance... I am no longer just a staff nurse here. I am your majority creditor."

Dr. Vance’s jaw dropped open. He looked at his sister, whose face had suddenly turned pale.

Elena leaned over the desk, looking directly into the Chief of Medicine's terrified eyes.

May you like

"And my first order of business as majority creditor," Elena said softly, "will be demanding a full, independent audit of all executive administrative salaries and legal retainer fees. Starting with yours, Dr. Vance."

Without waiting for a response, Elena turned on her heel and walked out of the office, her heart pounding with a victorious, electric fire.
