Chapter 6 - The Revenge of Vanessa

Z

Three days had passed since the explosive board meeting. News of the scandal at Whitmore Enterprises had broken across financial news outlets like a tidal wave. Headlines detailed the arrest of Richard Whitmore on charges of grand larceny and wire fraud, while luxury society magazines published salacious articles about Vanessa Whitmore’s sudden eviction from the family estate.

For Elena, however, life had become a bizarre tightrope walk between two entirely different worlds.

In the morning, she sat in executive meetings alongside high-powered attorneys, reviewing trust accounts and signing restructuring documents that redirected millions toward charity foundations. By six o'clock in the evening, she was back in her modest apartment, cooking dinner for Mia and washing scrub uniforms for her upcoming hospital shifts.

She had refused to leave her nursing job, despite Margaret’s protests.

"It keeps me grounded, Margaret," Elena had insisted. "The moment I abandon who I am, I become no different from Richard and Vanessa."

It was a rainy Thursday afternoon when Elena pulled her car into the parking lot of Mia’s elementary school. The bell was about to ring, and she wanted to pick Mia up early before heading to the night shift at the hospital.

As she walked toward the front entrance of the school, a sleek black SUV pulled up alongside the curb with a screech of tires.

The door flew open, and Vanessa Whitmore stepped out.

She looked nothing like the polished, diamond-clad socialite from the weekend party. Her hair was messy, pulled back into an untidy ponytail, her eyes were red-rimmed and hollow, and she wore a plain raincoat over wrinkled clothes.

"Elena!" Vanessa screamed, marching straight toward her across the wet asphalt.

Elena stopped, her body instantly going on high alert. "Vanessa. You shouldn't be here."

"You ruined my life!" Vanessa shrieked, ignoring the startled looks from other parents waiting near the school doors. She stepped right into Elena’s personal space, her voice trembling with manic rage. "Richard is in a holding cell! The bank froze our personal accounts! My children were turned away from their private country club today! Do you have any idea what you've done to my family?!"

"Your husband stole forty million dollars, Vanessa," Elena said firmly, refusing to back down. "He ruined your family. Not me."

"You set a trap!" Vanessa lunged forward, her nails clawing toward Elena’s face.

Elena grabbed Vanessa’s wrists instinctively, using her training from handling combative patients in the emergency room to twist her arms back safely and shove her away. Vanessa stumbled backward onto the wet grass, gasping for breath.

"Get away from me," Elena warned, her voice dropping into a icy tone. "If you come near me or my daughter again, I will have the restraining order Arthur filed put into immediate effect."

Vanessa scrambled to her feet, her face contorted in pure, unadulterated hatred. "You think you've won? You think a poor nobody like you can just step into our world and take everything? I know who you really are, Elena! And soon, the whole world will know too!"

Elena frowned. "What are you talking about?"

Vanessa let out a sharp, hysterical laugh. "David didn't die in a random car crash, Elena. He was running away from you! He was coming to my house that night to sign divorce papers!"

Elena’s heart skipped a beat. A cold chill ran down her spine, freezing the air in her lungs. "That’s a lie."

"Is it?" Vanessa sneered, pulling a folded, yellowed piece of paper from her raincoat pocket and waving it in the air. "I found this in David's old desk at the north estate while I was packing my things! A signed retainer with a divorce lawyer dated three days before his crash! He hated you, Elena! He knew you were using him for his money, just like you're using Margaret now!"

Elena felt as though the ground beneath her feet was giving way. Her breath caught in her throat. David? Wanting a divorce? They had been happy. They had loved each other. Hadn't they?

Before Elena could process the revelation, the school doors swung open, and a line of young children began filing out onto the covered walkway.

Among them was Mia, holding her backpack strap with one hand and looking around for her mother.

"Mommy!" Mia called out, waving her hand with a bright, innocent smile.

Vanessa’s eyes shifted from Elena to the small girl standing by the school doors. A terrifying, vengeful smirk crossed her face.

"Hello, little Mia," Vanessa called out loudly, taking a step toward the child. "Why don't you ask your mommy why your daddy was trying to leave her before he died?"

"Stop it!" Elena roared.

All the restraint Elena had maintained over the past four days vanished in a single instant of maternal fury. She slammed into Vanessa, grabbing her by the collar of her raincoat and shoving her violently against the side of the black SUV.

"If you ever speak to my daughter again," Elena whispered into Vanessa's ear, her voice shaking with lethal intensity, "I will make sure you don't have a single dollar left for bail. Do you understand me?"

Vanessa gasped, stunned by the sheer violence of Elena's reaction. The hatred in Elena's eyes was so absolute that Vanessa nodded slowly, genuine fear replacing her madness.

Elena let go, turned her back on Vanessa, and rushed toward her daughter, wrapping Mia in her arms before the child could understand what was happening.

"Come on, baby," Elena whispered, lifting Mia into her arms and carrying her toward the car. "We're going home."

Behind them, Vanessa wiped the mud from her raincoat, her malicious laugh echoing across the wet parking lot as the rain began to pour heavier down.
