Chapter 7 - Secrets of the Past

The rain hammered relentlessly against the windows of Elena’s apartment. Mia was tucked in bed, fast asleep after a long dinner and two bedtime stories. Elena sat at her kitchen table, staring at a blank wall while the silence of the room wrapped around her like a shroud.

Vanessa's words kept repeating in her head like a broken record.

He was running away from you... He was coming to my house that night to sign divorce papers.

Elena pressed her palms into her eyes, trying to block out the memory of that terrible night three years ago. David had left the house after a sudden, mysterious phone call. He had said he needed to clear his head, that he had family business to handle. Two hours later, a police officer stood on her porch, delivering the news that David's car had skidded off an icy bridge on his way back from the northern district.

She had always believed he died coming home to her and Mia. Was it all a lie?

Her phone buzzed on the counter, startling her.

It was Arthur Pendelton.

Elena picked it up immediately. "Arthur?"

"Elena," Arthur’s voice sounded tired, solemn. "I’m calling because I just received a communication from Vanessa's newly appointed civil attorney. They are threatening to release documents to the press tomorrow morning unless you step down as trustee."

Elena closed her eyes. "The divorce papers."

There was a long silence on the line before Arthur spoke. "So you already know."

Elena felt her chest tighten painfully. "Are they real, Arthur? Did David really hire a divorce lawyer before he died?"

"Elena, you must understand the context of what was happening three years ago—"

"Answer me, Arthur!" Elena cried out, her voice breaking. "Was he divorcing me?!"

Arthur took a deep breath. "Yes, Elena. There were draft documents prepared by a family law firm in Philadelphia. But you don't know the whole story."

"Then tell me!" Elena sobbed, tears finally spilling over her lashes and running down her cheeks. "Tell me why my husband hated me so much that he tried to leave without saying a word!"

"He didn't hate you, Elena," Arthur said softly. "He was trying to protect you."

Elena froze, wiping her face with the back of her hand. "Protect me? From what?"

"From Richard," Arthur revealed. "Three years ago, David discovered that Richard was embezzling funds from the family trust. When David confronted his brother and threatened to go to Margaret, Richard blackmailed him."

Elena’s breath caught in her throat. "Blackmailed him with what?"

"With you," Arthur explained quietly. "Richard threatened to use his influence on the board of St. Jude's Hospital to have your nursing license revoked on fabricated allegations of drug theft. He threatened to drag your name through the dirt and ensure you never worked in medicine again. He knew how much your career meant to you, and how fragile your family's finances were."

Elena listened, her heart pounding against her ribs as the puzzle pieces of her past finally began falling into place.

"David thought... if he divorced you," Arthur continued, "if he separated his assets and legally disconnected himself and Mia from the Whitmore name, Richard wouldn't have any leverage over you. The divorce papers weren't a sign of betrayal, Elena. They were a sacrifice. He was going to walk away from his family wealth and his own happiness just to keep you and Mia safe from Richard's corruption."

Tears streamed silently down Elena's face, but the cold weight in her chest suddenly transformed into a profound, aching grief mixed with reverence.

David hadn't abandoned her. He had been fighting for her in the dark.

"The night he died," Elena whispered, "he wasn't running away. He was coming back."

"He had just met with Richard at the North House," Arthur confirmed. "They had a terrible argument. David refused to sign a non-disclosure agreement regarding the embezzlement. He left the house in a rage, drove off during a winter storm, and lost control of his vehicle on the bridge."

Elena closed her eyes, visualizing David—alone, terrified, fighting to get back to his wife and daughter, trying to save them from the monsters in his own bloodline.

"Vanessa found those initial divorce drafts in Richard's desk," Arthur said. "She is using a half-truth to break your spirit, Elena. She wants you to feel worthless so you'll give up and walk away."

Elena stood up from the table, wiping her eyes with a renewed sense of strength. The doubt that had plagued her mind since the afternoon vanished, replaced by an unbreakable resolve.

"She won't get what she wants," Elena declared, her voice firm and unwavering. "Send me everything you have on Richard’s blackmail scheme three years ago, Arthur. Tomorrow, we stop playing defense."

"What are you going to do?" Arthur asked.

"I’m going to finish what my husband started," Elena replied. "I’m going to clean out this family once and for all."
