Zero nine

Chapter 8 - Shadows in the Daylight

Z

The morning light streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Brooklyn brownstone felt almost surreal after months of violence. Sophia stood near the kitchen island, watching Dominic tie Lily’s sneakers while attempting to negotiate a trade: two bites of apple for twenty minutes at the playground. For a moment, the world felt entirely soft, entirely theirs. But peace in the Moretti bloodline was always a quiet storm waiting to break.

A soft knock at the front door disrupted the quiet atmosphere. Dominic instantly shifted, his relaxed posture sharpening into a guarded stance. He motioned for Sophia to step back with Lily before walking to the entryway and checking the security monitor.

It was Victor.

The old consigliere stepped into the foyer, his face drawn tight under the bright hallway lights. He carried a leather document satchel under his arm and looked as though he hadn't slept since the trial of Julian Moretti ended two weeks ago.

"Dominic," Victor said, his voice dropping into that heavy, conspiratorial tone that usually preceded bad news. "We have an issue."

Dominic closed the heavy oak door and leaned against it, crossing his arms. "Julian is in a maximum-security federal medical wing in Colorado. His syndicate is dismantled. What could possibly be wrong?"

Victor pulled a thick Manila folder from his satchel and handed it over. "Julian was the face of the operation, Dominic. But he didn't fund his return to New York on his own. Offshore banking records we pulled from his dark trusts show massive wire transfers originating from a private equity firm in Geneva."

Dominic opened the folder, scanning the dense columns of transaction histories. "Valentin Capital. Who owns it?"

"A shadowy conglomerate," Victor replied, lowering his eyes. "Registered under a web of shell companies. But twenty-four hours ago, Valentin Capital bought out the debt of the firm Sophia works for downtown."

Dominic froze. His dark eyes flicked toward the kitchen, where Sophia was helping Lily pack her small pink backpack. "They bought her firm?"

"Every share," Victor confirmed. "They own the building, the assets, and the employment contracts. By Monday morning, Sophia Carter will legally be reporting to a board of directors controlled by whoever backed your brother."

A cold, dangerous rage flickered behind Dominic’s eyes. He had promised Sophia that he would not interfere with her career, that he would let her stand on her own feet without the Moretti name shadowing her every move. Whoever had bought her firm knew that. They weren't coming at Dominic with guns or explosives this time—they were coming through the legal system, using her independence as a weapon against them.

Sophia walked into the hallway, noticing the heavy silence immediately. She looked between Dominic and Victor, her eyes narrowing as she saw the Manila folder in Dominic's hand.

"What is that?" she asked, her voice quiet but firm.

"Nothing for you to worry about," Dominic began automatically, stepping forward.

"Dominic," Sophia interrupted, stepping into his space, her eyes blazing with that familiar, uncompromising fire. "We promised. No hiding things. What is in that file?"

Dominic looked at her for a long moment before handing her the documents. Sophia skimmed the pages quickly, her sharp auditor's mind processing the complex corporate structures in seconds. As her eyes reached the bottom line, her breath caught in her throat.

"They bought my company," she whispered, her fingers tightening on the paper. "They didn't try to fire me this time. They bought the entire firm."

"I'll buy it back," Dominic said immediately, reaching for his phone. "I'll execute a hostile takeover by noon. I'll destroy the board—"

"No!" Sophia said, her voice echoing in the hallway.

Dominic stopped, staring at her in disbelief. "Sophia, they are using your job to pull you back into the crosshairs!"

"And if you step in and buy my firm with Moretti money, you validate everything they want!" Sophia argued, stepping closer, poking a finger against his chest. "They want you to overreach. They want you to make a loud, public mess so federal regulators start digging into your holdings again. If you interfere, you play right into their hands."

"So what do you expect me to do?" Dominic demanded, his voice rising slightly before he checked himself, mindful of Lily in the next room. "Sit back and let whoever backed Julian dictate your life?"

"No," Sophia said, her lip trembling slightly, though her gaze remained unbroken. "You let me do my job. I am an auditor, Dominic. If someone set up a shell company in Geneva to trap us, they left a paper trail. I will find who is behind Valentin Capital from the inside."

Dominic looked at her like she had lost her mind. "It's too dangerous."

"It's my life!" Sophia countered fiercely. "You fought for us with guns and muscle. Let me fight for us with the only weapon I have. Trust me, Dominic. Please."

Dominic stared into the eyes of the woman he loved, feeling the terrifying weight of giving up control. He looked at Victor, who gave a faint, slow nod of agreement.

Before Dominic could speak, his private phone rang. It wasn't an encrypted call. It was an unknown number with a Geneva country code.

Dominic answered, putting it on speaker so Sophia and Victor could hear.

"Mr. Moretti," a voice purred through the speaker. It was smooth, female, and carried a faint, icy French accent. "I believe you've received our little gift to Miss Carter."

"Who is this?" Dominic growled, his hand gripping the edge of the hallway table so hard the wood groaned.

"A friend who believes in proper balance," the woman replied softly. "Your brother was crude, Mr. Moretti. A brute who used bombs and threats. We prefer a far more civilized game. Miss Carter has a new job description starting Monday. We look forward to seeing how bright she really is."

The line went dead.

Dominic slowly lowered the phone. He looked at Sophia, his chest heaving with suppressed fury.

Sophia didn't look afraid. She reached out, taking his hand, her grip remarkably steady.

"Welcome to my world, Dominic," she said softly. "Now it's my turn to protect this family."
