Chapter 10 - The Vault of Secrets

Z

At two o'clock in the morning, the basement level of the Moretti estate in Long Island was dead silent. The air was cold, smelling of ancient stone and iron.

Dominic stood near the entrance of the subterranean vault, watching Sophia sitting at an oak work table illuminated by a single brass lamp. She was surrounded by bound financial ledgers from the 1980s, her fingers moving furiously across the keyboard of a high-powered encrypted laptop.

"Sophia," Dominic said softly, stepping closer and placing a warm hand on her shoulder. "You've been at this for eight hours. Take a break."

"I'm close, Dominic," she murmured without looking up, her eyes scanning lines of German and French transaction codes. "Genevieve thinks Eduardo's cryptographic key was a password or a digital cipher. But Eduardo was an old-school banker. He didn't use digital algorithms."

Dominic frowned slightly. "My father hated computers. He wrote everything in his leather notebooks."

"Exactly," Sophia said, turning her laptop toward him. "Look at these routing numbers from 1988. They aren't bank codes, Dominic. They are ledger page references from his personal diary. Genevieve spent thirty years looking for a digital key, but the key is a literary cipher based on the books your father kept in his private library!"

Dominic stared at the screen, a look of profound amazement washing over his face. "You figured out my father's dark ledger system in eight hours?"

"I'm very good at my job," Sophia said, a hint of playful pride in her voice before her expression turned serious. "Dominic... if I decode this, we will have full access to Genevieve's offshore network. We can prove Valentin Capital was funded by illegal European cartel money. We can freeze her assets and destroy her firm legally before five o me tomorrow."

Dominic looked at her, his heart swelling with a fierce, burning love. "You're going to bankrupt her."

"I'm going to do better than that," Sophia said softly, reaching up to cover his hand with hers. "I'm going to save my company, protect our family, and ensure that woman never threatens Lily again. But I need you to do something for me."

"Anything," Dominic said without hesitation.

"Genevieve expects me to meet her tomorrow at noon to hand over the decoded files," Sophia said, her eyes glittering with strategic brilliance. "I want you to come with me. Not as a mob boss with guns... but as the CEO of Moretti Enterprises, standing beside his partner."

Dominic smiled—a genuine, dangerous, beautiful smile that reached his eyes. "A corporate execution. I'd be honored."

The next morning at eleven fifty-five, the high-glass conference room of Valentin Capital was silent. Madame Genevieve Laurent sat at the head of the long mahogany table, checking her diamond watch.

The heavy double doors opened.

Sophia walked in, looking regal in a cream-colored wool suit. But she wasn't alone.

Walking right beside her was Dominic Moretti, looking impeccably formidable in a three-piece dark navy suit. Behind them walked two federal agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission, accompanied by Victor Bellini carrying a sleek silver briefcase.

Genevieve’s serene mask cracked for a fraction of a second. She stood up slowly. "Miss Carter. I believe our meeting was private. And who authorized Mr. Moretti's presence in my boardroom?"

"I authorized it," Sophia said calmly, stepping up to the table and laying a slender flash drive on the polished wood. "Because as the new head of your compliance unit, it is my legal duty to inform you that Valentin Capital is currently under federal seizure."

Genevieve snapped her eyes to the two federal agents. "This is absurd! On what grounds?"

"On the grounds of systemic money laundering, wire fraud, and funding international criminal syndicates," Sophia replied, her voice ringing clear and authoritative through the room. "The flash drive on your table contains thirty years of Eduardo Moretti's dark accounts—which I successfully decrypted last night."

Genevieve went completely pale. "You... you decrypted Eduardo's books?"

"Every single line," Sophia said, leaning forward over the table, her eyes locking onto Genevieve's with absolute triumph. "And I found the wire transfers you sent to Julian Moretti to buy weapons and hire mercenaries. The SEC and the Department of Justice have already frozen all Valentin Capital accounts in Switzerland, New York, and Geneva. You are ruined, Madame Laurent."

Genevieve staggered back slightly, looking at Dominic in a desperate fury. "You... you let a woman do your fighting, Moretti?"

Dominic stepped forward, placing a gentle, possessive hand on the small of Sophia's back. He looked down at Genevieve with cold, effortless disdain.

"I didn't let her do anything," Dominic said smoothly, his voice laced with pride. "She saved us all on her own. And as for your acquisition of her firm... Moretti Enterprises bought back ninety percent of your firm's shares twenty minutes ago. Sophia Carter is now the Chief Executive Auditor of the entire division."

Genevieve stared at them in utter defeat as the two federal agents stepped forward, pulling out hand-cuffs. "Madame Laurent, you are under arrest."

As the agents led the weeping woman away, Dominic turned to Sophia. He pulled her into his arms right there in the boardroom, kissing her deeply, ignoring the applause of the federal agents and Victor.

"You are incredible," Dominic whispered against her lips.

"I told you," Sophia smiled, breathless and glowing. "Never underestimate an auditor."
