Chapter 7 - The Architect of RuinZ

The ride back to the precinct was a quiet, suffocating nightmare. The rain pounded against the roof of the police cruiser like tiny hammers, matching the frantic rhythm of my heartbeat. Victoria's final words echoed endlessly in my mind: “Check who paid me to enter your house in the first place.”
Was she just trying to play one last mind game? Was she trying to fracture whatever shattered pieces of my marriage remained? Or was there an even darker, more sinister truth hidden beneath the layers of deceit?
When we arrived at the police station, the atmosphere was chaotic. Agents from the FBI and the Department of Defense had already taken over the main conference room, seizing the recovered briefcase, the encrypted hard drives, and all documentation related to Vanguard Defense. Victoria Vance was taken directly to a federal holding cell, stripped of her belongings, and placed under 24-hour suicide watch.
I stood in the bright, sterile hallway outside the interrogation rooms. Through the one-way glass of Interrogation Room B, I saw Ryan. He was sitting alone at a metal table, his head buried in his hands, crying silently. He looked small, broken, and pathetic.
Detective Miller walked up beside me, holding two paper cups of black coffee. She handed one to me.
"The federal prosecutors are taking over the espionage charges," Miller said quietly. "Victoria Vance isn't getting out. Ever. Between the federal treason charges and the state charges for what she did to your son, she'll die behind bars."
"What about what she said at the airfield?" I asked, my fingers trembling around the hot paper cup. "She said someone paid her to target us. She said to check Ryan's phone."
Miller sighed, pulling a evidence bag out of her jacket pocket. Inside was Ryan's smartphone, which had been confiscated when he was brought in for questioning.
"Our cyber forensics team just finished extracting the data from his phone, his personal emails, and his encrypted messaging apps," Miller said, looking at me with deep sympathy. "Claire... I think you need to sit down."
"No," I said, my voice rock solid despite the terror tearing through my insides. "Tell me."
Miller unlocked the tablet she was carrying and pulled up a transcript of flagged messages. "Ryan told you he had an affair with Victoria because she seduced him, right? He claimed she blackmailed him afterward?"
"Yes," I spat. "That's what he said."
"It was a lie," Miller revealed flatly. "Or at least, half a lie. Ryan didn't meet 'Megan' when she applied for the babysitting job last fall. He met her three months before that, at a tech convention in Las Vegas."
I felt the breath leave my lungs. I reached out and steadied myself against the wall.
"They had an ongoing affair long before she ever stepped foot in your house," Miller continued, turning the tablet so I could read the encrypted text logs dated from a year ago. "Ryan was deep in gambling debt, Claire. Over two hundred thousand dollars in debt to offshore sportsbooks. He was desperate."
I stared at the screen. The text messages were right there. Ryan's words.
“I can’t pay them back, Victoria. They’re threatening to come to my house. They’re going to tell Claire.”
“I can fix your debt, Ryan,” Victoria had replied. “Get me the Aegis source code from Vanguard. I have a buyer willing to pay two million. We split it, you pay your debts, and you walk away clean.”
“I can’t just steal it from the office, the logging systems are too strict,” Ryan had texted back. “I have to bring the physical drive home. But Claire is always there. She watches the baby like a hawk.”
“Then hire me as your nanny,” Victoria had written. “I’ll handle Claire. I’ll handle the kid. You just bring the drive home.”
My eyes filled with tears, but they weren't tears of sadness. They were tears of pure, unadulterated venom.
My husband hadn't been an unwitting victim of corporate espionage. He hadn't just made a "stupid mistake" by having a fling. He was the architect of this entire nightmare. He had personally invited a wolf into our home to cover up his pathetic gambling addiction. He had handed our son over to a professional criminal knowing she was going to drug him, just so he could steal military code and line his own pockets.
"He knew..." I choked out, a terrifying laugh escaping my throat. "He knew she was drugging Leo?"
"The texts show he asked her to 'keep the kid quiet' while he was transferring files," Miller said, her face grim. "He might not have known the exact chemical compounds she was using, but he knew she was giving him something to make him sleep. He prioritized his money and his secrets over his own son's life."
I didn't say another word. I turned away from the glass window, walked down the hall, and pushed open the heavy door to Interrogation Room B.
Ryan looked up sharply, his eyes bloodshot and swollen. When he saw me, a flicker of hope crossed his face.
"Claire!" he sobbed, pushing his chair back and standing up. "Thank God! Is Leo okay? Did they catch her? Please, Claire, tell me you forgive me—"
I walked straight up to him. Before he could finish his sentence, I drew back my hand and slapped him across the face with every ounce of strength in my body.
The crack echoing through the room was deafening. Ryan stumbled back, clutching his reddened cheek, staring at me in shock.
"Claire—"
"I saw the texts, Ryan," I said, my voice dropping to a icy, lethal whisper that silenced him instantly. "I saw Las Vegas. I saw the gambling debts. I saw you selling out your country, your wife... and your baby boy."

Ryan’s face collapsed into absolute, utter horror. The last remaining mask of innocence shattered into a million pieces. He sank back down into his chair, hiding his face in his hands, weeping uncontrollably.
"You are a monster," I told him, leaning over the table, staring down at the coward who had destroyed our lives. "Victoria is going to prison for life. And I am going to make sure you rot in the cell right next to her."
