Chapter 5 - The Web of BetrayalZ

The air in the room froze. Time seemed to stop completely.
I sat there, looking at the man I had built a life with, the man who had held my hand through twenty-four hours of agonizing labor, the man who had promised to love and protect our family.
"What did you just say?" My voice was barely a whisper, a hollow, dead sound.
"Claire, please, listen to me!" Ryan fell to his knees beside my chair, reaching for my hands, but I yanked them back as if he were covered in acid. "It was a mistake! A terrible, stupid mistake! It only happened twice! She manipulated me, she set a trap—"
"You cheated on me?" I gasped, the betrayal hitting me like a physical blow to the chest. "With the woman we hired to protect our child?!"
"She came onto me!" Ryan sobbed, begging like a dog. "It was two months after she started. You were always at work, we were fighting about money, I was stressed out of my mind... One night when you were at a conference in Chicago, she stayed late. She offered me a drink. I didn't realize... God, Claire, I think she drugged me too!"
"Don't you dare lay this on drugs!" I screamed, standing up and backing away from him until my spine hit the cold plaster wall. "You brought an operative into our home! You slept with her in our bed while our baby was upstairs! And while you were indulging your disgusting ego, she was poisoning our son!"
Detective Miller stepped between us, her face grim and unyielding. "Mr. Davis, get up off the floor. Right now."
Ryan dragged himself up, wiping his wet face, looking completely broken. But I had zero pity left for him. Every ounce of love, trust, and respect I had for him had vanished, burned to ash in a single second.
"The secondary account, Mr. Davis," Miller commanded, her voice dropping to a dangerous register. "What did she get from you during this... affair?"
Ryan swallowed hard, his voice trembling. "She... she recorded us. A month ago, she sent me a video file from an encrypted address. She threatened to send it to Claire and forward it to the board at Vanguard Defense. It would have ruined my marriage and destroyed my security clearance instantly."
"So she blackmailed you," Miller stated cleanly.
"Yes!" Ryan cried. "She said she would delete the footage if I gave her access to my high-yield offshore trading account—the one my family set up for Leo's trust fund! I gave her the credentials two weeks ago. I thought... I thought if I gave her the money, she would leave us alone!"
"You gave her Leo's trust fund?!" I shrieked, my nails digging into the palms of my hands until I nearly broke the skin. "You gave our son's future to a blackmailer to cover up your disgusting affair?!"
"I was trying to protect us!" Ryan yelled back, hysterically trying to justify the unjustifiable. "I thought if she took the money, she'd disappear and you'd never have to know!"
"You didn't protect anyone!" I roared. "You gave her total leverage! You let her stay in our house! You let her keep coming back day after day to feed our child tranquilizers because you were too coward to confess what you did!"
"Enough!" Detective Miller snapped, slamming her hand on the table. The sharp noise cracked through the room like a gunshot. "Both of you, quiet down!"
Miller paced back and forth, her eyes tracking the floor as her tactical mind put the puzzle pieces together.
"Victoria Vance didn't just want the military code," Miller said, looking up. "The code was her primary contract for her corporate client. But she's a predator. She saw a weak, desperate husband and realized she could double-dip. She drained your trust account, stole the software, and kept drugging your baby to buy time so she could transfer the funds through multiple shell companies without triggering bank alerts."
"Where is she now?" I demanded, tears of pure fury burning my eyes. "Find her. I want her in handcuffs. I want her locked in a cage for the rest of her life!"
"She's smart, but she's running on a tight timeline," Miller said, pulling out her radio. "She needs to physicalize those offshore funds and meet her buyer for the Vanguard code. If she leaves the country, we lose her."
Suddenly, Officer Vance knocked on the door and stepped inside, his expression dark.
"Detective," he said. "We just got a ping from the state police. A vehicle matching Victoria Vance's sedan was just spotted by an automated license plate reader near the industrial docks on the east side of town."
"Is she trying to get on a boat?" Miller asked.
"Worse," Officer Vance replied. "The docks are right next to the private regional airfield. A charter jet filed a flight plan ten minutes ago, heading to a non-extradition territory in South America. Departure time is set for forty-five minutes from now."
"Get the SWAT units," Miller ordered immediately, grabbing her tactical jacket from her chair. "We're moving!"
"I'm coming with you," I said firmly, stepping forward.
"Absolutely not, Mrs. Davis," Miller warned. "This is a high-risk tactical operation."
"My son is lying in a hospital bed because of that woman!" I said, my voice echoing with a fierce, deadly resolve that surprised even myself. "My life is completely destroyed! I am coming, or I will follow you in my own car!"
Detective Miller looked into my eyes, seeing the absolute refusal to back down. She sighed sharply. "You stay in the back of my cruiser. You don't step foot near the tarmac. Do you understand me?"
"Understood," I said.

I didn't even look at Ryan as I walked past him. He reached out to grab my hand, whispering my name, but I brushed him off as if he were a stranger on the street.
As we rushed out of the hospital toward the police cruiser, my heart pounded. I didn't care about Vanguard Defense. I didn't care about Ryan's ruined life or the stolen money. I wanted Victoria Vance. I wanted to look into the eyes of the monster who had hurt my baby boy, and I wanted to see her world burn down.
