Chapter 4 - The Mastermind’s ShadowZ

The text message burned into my retinas. I dropped the phone onto the slick hospital floor, the screen cracking against the linoleum. Ryan immediately snatched it up, his face draining of all color as he stared at the image.

"Ryan?" I whispered, the ground slipping beneath me. "What does that mean? What secrets?"

Ryan didn't answer right away. His jaw worked silently, a terrifying mix of guilt and sheer terror dawning across his features. He looked at Officer Vance, then at me, unable to hold my gaze for more than a second.

"Ryan, answer me!" I shrieked, grabbing his jacket. "Who is that woman?! What was in that safe?!"

"It... it wasn't just cash, Claire," Ryan stammered, his voice cracking. "There were flash drives. Hard drives from my firm."

Ryan worked as a senior software architect for Vanguard Defense, a high-level government contractor dealing with proprietary drone tracking technology. For years, he had assured me that his work was heavily encrypted and strictly regulated. But looking at him now, seeing the cold sweat breaking out across his forehead, I realized he had been keeping something massive from me.

"You brought classified work home?" Officer Vance asked, his eyes hardening instantly. He reached for his radio. "I need Detective Miller at the ER immediately, and dispatch a unit to search the residence for a potential burglary in progress."

Within twenty minutes, Detective Sarah Miller arrived. She was a hardened woman in her late forties, with dark, sharp eyes that took in the scene with terrifying efficiency. She set up a temporary interrogation space in a private family room down the hall from Leo's room, where my son was finally resting under the constant supervision of two nurses.

"Let's drop the fairy tales, Mr. Davis," Detective Miller said, slapping a file folder onto the small wooden table. "The fake 'Megan' didn't target your family by accident. She didn't apply for a babysitting job through a local agency just to steal a few thousand bucks and drug a baby. She targeted you."

"I don't understand," I sobbed, sitting beside Ryan, feeling completely detached from the man I had slept next to for seven years. "We're a normal family! We live in the suburbs!"

"Your husband isn't just a normal developer, Mrs. Davis," Miller said, eyeing Ryan coldly. "Six months ago, Vanguard Defense suffered a massive internal leak. A piece of corporate espionage software was planted on their internal servers. Someone was looking for the blue-sky source code for the Aegis tracking protocol. They couldn't bypass the firewalls externally, so they had to do it internally."

Miller leaned forward, placing her hands flat on the table. "They needed someone with top-tier access who was lazy enough to take encrypted files home on an unsecured hard drive. And then they needed a way inside his house."

I turned to Ryan, my blood running cold. "Is this true? Did you bring those files home?"

"I was working on a patch!" Ryan protested desperately, tears streaming down his cheeks. "I was working eighty-hour weeks! They were going to pass me over for the promotion if I didn't finish it! I copied the sandbox environment to a personal secure drive so I could work from home after Leo went to sleep!"

"And you put it in our bedroom safe?" I asked, my voice deadly quiet.

"I thought it was safe!" Ryan cried out. "I didn't know!"

"You brought a snake into our home!" I screamed, pushing my chair back so violently it clattered to the floor. "She was drugging our son! Every single day! She was poisoning our baby boy just so she could search our house while he was unconscious!"

The horrific reality clicked into place with ruthless clarity. Megan hadn't just been a negligent nanny. She was an operative. She had drugged Leo day after day, keeping him sedated so he wouldn't cry, scream, or disrupt her as she methodically searched our house, decoded Ryan's personal security setups, and eventually found the combination to the safe.

"We ran the Ring footage through our facial recognition database," Detective Miller interrupted, cutting off our screaming match. She pulled a black-and-white printout from her folder and slid it across the table.

The photo was a clear frame-grab of Megan from our hallway camera, stripped of her cheerful smiles and soft babysitter attire.

"Her real name is Victoria Vance," Detective Miller revealed. "No relation to Officer Vance. She's a high-value corporate mercenary, wanted by federal agencies in three different countries for industrial espionage, extortion, and identity theft. She's a ghost."

I stared at the paper. The woman who had fed my son, held him, sang to him, and smiled in my face was a professional monster.

"If she has the hard drives," Ryan whispered, staring at his hands, "she's already gone. She'll sell them on the dark web or to a foreign interest within hours."

"Not necessarily," Detective Miller replied, her lips curling into a grim line. "Victoria Vance is smart, but she made a mistake today. She got sloppy because of the delivery driver."

"The driver..." I murmured. "Where is he?"

"We located him," Miller said. "His name is Marcus. He's at the precinct right now giving a statement. But he told us something very interesting, Mrs. Davis. He didn't just notice the trash today. He noticed something else happening outside your house three days ago."

"What?" I asked.

"He saw 'Megan' meeting with a man in an unmarked black SUV at the end of your cul-de-sac," Miller said. "And according to Marcus, they weren't exchanging software. They were arguing. She told him, 'The husband is getting suspicious, I need more time to clear the secondary account.'"

I frowned, looking at Ryan. "Secondary account? What is she talking about?"

Ryan’s face went completely deathly pale. Worse than when he saw the empty safe. His mouth opened, but no sound came out.

"Ryan?" I asked, a fresh wave of dread washing over me. "What secondary account?"

"Claire..." Ryan gasped, clutching his chest as if he couldn't breathe. "I... I didn't just bring the files home."

"What did you do, Ryan?" Detective Miller demanded, standing up. "Talk!"

"She... Megan... Victoria..." Ryan stammered, tears pouring down his face. "She didn't just hunt for the files. Three months ago... she seduced me."
