Chapter 6 - The Baiting of the Hook

Daniel sat in the back of an unmarked black sedan parked three blocks away from the residential high-rise, his breath fogging up the tinted glass window. His fingers were shaking uncontrollably as he stared at the digital countdown timer on his phone. It was 8:30 PM. Three and a half hours left until his midnight deadline.

Beside him sat Julian Thorne, calmly smoking a thin cigarette, his face completely illuminated by the blue light of a customized laptop resting on his lap.

"She called back," Daniel said, turning to Thorne with a mixture of terror and triumph in his eyes. "She agreed! She said she’s willing to sign over the authorization codes for the Panama escrow account, but she insists I come up to the penthouse to hand over the physical child custody release forms in person."

Thorne slowly turned his head, blowing a thin plume of smoke toward the dashboard. "And you believe her?"

"She was crying, Julian!" Daniel insisted, his voice laced with manic self-assurance. "She had Noah hidden away! I saw the curtains go down on the penthouse windows myself. She’s terrified. She’s just a mother who wants her son safe. I told you she’d break! She always breaks when things get too real!"

Thorne clicked a few keys on his laptop, monitoring the network logs of the offshore accounts. "If you go into that building, Daniel, you are taking a massive risk. The police could be waiting in the lobby."

"The police aren't there!" Daniel snapped, grabbing Thorne's arm. "If she called the cops, the sniper from Apex Security takes out the penthouse glass. She knows that! She won't risk it. I just go in, get her master biometric key, authorize the wire transfer of the twenty-five million, and then we take the private boat across Lake Michigan to the Canadian airstrip. That was the deal!"

Thorne looked at Daniel with a look of cold, masked contempt. "Fine. But I’m sending two of my men from Apex with you. They will handle the security sweep of the floor before you step out of the elevator. If anything looks suspicious, they clear the floor with force."

"Whatever! Just let's get this over with!" Daniel growled, checking his wristwatch.

Twenty minutes later, the private service elevator of the high-rise chimed softly as it reached the top penthouse floor. The doors slid open to reveal a completely silent, dimly lit foyer. Two muscular men wearing dark tactical gear and carrying concealed sidearms stepped out first, their eyes scanning every corner of the carpeted hallway.

"Clear," one of the men grunted into his radio headset.

Daniel stepped out from behind them, straightening his crumpled suit jacket. He felt a sudden, surge of dark satisfaction. For months, he had been forced to pretend that Claire was his equal, hiding his affair, hiding his financial moves, feeling constantly judged by her quiet, analytical intellect. Now, he was coming to take back what was his.

He pushed open the heavy double doors of the penthouse.

The main living room was dark, save for the soft ambient light from the Chicago skyline shining through the partially opened curtains. Standing near the center of the room, illuminated by the city lights, was Claire. She was sitting quietly behind a sleek glass desk, an open laptop sitting in front of her. She wasn't crying. She wasn't shaking.

Her face was as serene as marble.

"Where is the paperwork, Daniel?" Claire asked softly, her voice echoing in the vast, empty room.

Daniel stepped into the room, his two armed guards trailing closely behind him. "Where is Noah?" he demanded, looking around the empty space.

"He's somewhere you will never reach again," Claire replied quietly.

Daniel chuckled, a dark, arrogant sound. "Always playing the tough woman, aren't you, Claire? It doesn't work anymore. The sniper across the street is locked onto this floor. My men are standing right here. You are going to log into Vanguard Capital's primary authorization portal right now, enter your biometric key, and transfer the twenty-five million dollars to the Panama account."

"And if I don't?"

"Then my men drag you out of here, and you never see your son again," Daniel snarled, stepping up to the desk and slamming his hand against the glass top. "Log in! Now!"

Claire didn't move a muscle. Instead, she leaned back in her chair and looked past Daniel, directly at the two tactical guards standing near the doorway.

"Gentlemen," Claire said calmly. "Your names are Viktor and Mikhail. You are former private security contractors currently being paid by Apex Security Solutions. As of six minutes ago, the FBI seized Apex Security’s bank accounts under the Federal Racketeering and Organized Crime Act."

The two men froze, their eyes widening in sudden alarm.

"What is she talking about?" Daniel demanded, turning to look at his guards. "Ignore her! She's lying!"

"I'm not lying, Daniel," Claire said, tapping a key on her laptop. The massive television screen on the living room wall flickered to life, showing a live video feed from three streets away.

It was the black sedan where Julian Thorne was sitting.

On the screen, half a dozen unmarked tactical vehicles surrounded Thorne's car. SWAT officers blew out the windows with flashbang grenades, dragging a screaming, struggling Julian Thorne out onto the asphalt and slamming him face-down onto the pavement.

"Your employer, Mr. Thorne, just got arrested," Claire said, her voice completely smooth. "He was currently in the process of redirecting that twenty-five million dollars away from your Panama account and straight into his own private account in the Cayman Islands. He was going to leave you behind, Daniel. He was going to let you take the fall for kidnapping and extortion while he flew to South America."

Daniel's face drained of all color. He stared at the television screen in absolute horror, watching his entire escape plan dissolve into dust in real-time. "No... no, no! That's impossible! Julian promised me!"

"Julian lied to you," Claire said softly. She turned back to the two guards. "If you drop your weapons now, my attorney will inform the U.S. Attorney that you cooperated fully. If you don't... you will spend the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary for terrorism and extortion."

The two guards exchanged a brief, panicked look. Without saying a word, they unclipped their holstered handguns, tossed them onto the carpet, and slowly raised their hands in the air, stepping back toward the hallway.

"Wait! Where are you going?!" Daniel screamed, turning toward his departing guards. "I paid you! You work for me!"

The doors clicked shut, leaving Daniel completely alone in the dark room with Claire.

He slowly turned back to face his wife, his chest heaving, his eyes wide with a manic, unhinged fury. "You... you ruined everything," he whispered, pulling a small silver pocket knife from his coat pocket and snapping the blade open. "You took my money, my company, my life... I'm going to make you pay, Claire!"

He lunged across the glass desk toward her, his face twisted in a murderous rage.
