Chapter 2 - The Midnight Raid

The rain fell in unrelenting, heavy sheets against the high-rise windows of Mercer Construction Headquarters, blurring the vibrant skyline of downtown Chicago. Inside the darkened lobby, the security guards had been bribed or dismissed; Daniel had made sure of that with a thick stack of unmarked hundred-dollar bills. He moved like a ghost through the silent marble corridors, his heart hammering against his ribs in a terrifying rhythm he hadn’t felt since he was a teenager stealing cars.

Accompanying him was Vanessa, drenched in a sleek designer trench coat, her heels clicking softly against the polished floor despite his repeated hushed warnings. She was frantic, her usual composed, high-society facade cracking beneath the sudden weight of federal scrutiny and public humiliation.

"Daniel, are you absolutely sure about this?" Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling as they rode the private elevator up to the executive suite. "If anyone catches us—"

"Shut up, Vanessa!" Daniel snapped, his eyes glued to the digital floor display as it climbed higher and higher. "No one is catching us. The night shift is completely empty, and the server room's primary firewalls aren't monitored live until seven in the morning. Once I run the physical wiper drive through the primary mainframe, the transaction logs from the last three years will be scrambled beyond recovery. Forensic accountants can’t trace what no longer exists."

He spoke with an aggressive confidence, but his sweat-slicked palms betrayed him. Ever since the court hearing where Claire had played that damning audio recording, his world had begun to unravel at blinding speed. The board members were suddenly ducking his calls, the bank was threatening to freeze his corporate line of credit, and his golden image as the self-made titan of Chicago real estate was shattering into jagged pieces.

The elevator chimed, opening directly into the glass-walled executive floor. Daniel rushed toward the secure server room situated right behind his corner office. He swiped his master keycard. The scanner beeped a reassuring green, and the heavy pneumatic door hissed open, exposing rows of tall, black server racks thrumming with cool air and blinking green lights.

"Find the physical backups, the blue encrypted drives on rack four!" Daniel instructed frantically, pulling a high-capacity thumb drive—pre-loaded with custom ransomware logic—from his pocket. "I’ll initiate the override from the main terminal."

Vanessa scrambled past the delicate wiring, her red nails frantically picking at the hard drives stacked in the secondary racks. "I can't tell which ones are for the offshore accounts! They’re all just labeled with serial numbers!"

"Just grab everything from 2024 through 2026!" Daniel yelled, jamming his thumb drive into the central terminal's interface. He typed frantically on the keyboard, bypassing three levels of security using the administrative credentials he had retained as CEO. Lines of red code began scrolling across the terminal monitor: SYSTEM OVERRIDE INITIATED. FORMATTING SECTORS 01 THROUGH 128.

A ruthless smile spread across Daniel's face. "She thought she was so clever," he muttered, thinking of Claire, of her quiet, calculating gaze in the courtroom. "She thought a few old tax forms and stolen audio clips could destroy me. Without the raw ledger data stored on these physical servers, her forensic audit is just a collection of theories and hearsay."

"Daniel, look!" Vanessa suddenly shrieked, pointing toward the glass partitions overlooking the atrium.

Below them, flashing blue and red lights cut through the rain-soaked darkness of the street. Dozens of marked federal cruisers and sleek black SUVs pulled up, blocking every exit driveway surrounding the building complex.

Daniel’s blood ran ice-cold. "How... how did they know? No one knew we were coming here!"

Before he could pull his wiper drive out of the computer, the sudden, violent sound of breaking reinforced glass echoed from the main entrance downstairs. Heavy tactical footsteps thundered up the stairwells. Within seconds, the double doors of the executive suite were smashed open.

"FBI! Don't move! Hands where we can see them!"

Armed agents in tactical vests swept into the server room, their weapon-mounted flashlights blinding Daniel and Vanessa. Daniel froze, his hands instinctively rising into the air, his face completely drained of color. Vanessa dropped the hard drives she was clutching; they clattered loudly against the metallic floor grids, several plastic casings snapping open under the impact.

Out from behind the line of tactical officers stepped Special Agent Marcus Vance of the Internal Revenue Service's Criminal Investigation division, flanked by a tall, elegant woman wrapped in a beige cashmere coat.

Claire.

She walked casually into the brightly lit server room, her hands tucked neatly into her coat pockets. Her eyes were completely cold as she looked at her husband—the man who had spent the morning buying diamonds while plotting to destroy her life.

"You always were predictable, Daniel," Claire said softly, her voice carrying easily over the humming servers. "Did you really think I didn't know about the off-site trigger alerts I designed for this very system five years ago? The moment your master keycard cleared the front door after hours, a red flag went directly to Agent Vance."

"Claire... please..." Daniel stammered, stepping away from the console as an agent immediately cuffed his wrists behind his back. "We can talk about this. Think of Noah! You're destroying our son's father!"

"You destroyed his father the day you decided to steal his future to buy necklaces for your mistress," Claire replied without a trace of emotion.

Vanessa was pressed against the glass wall by another officer, her wrists bound in tight plastic zip-ties as she sobbed hysterically. "This is a mistake! I don't work for the financial team! I'm just the marketing director! Daniel made me sign those papers!"

"Save it for the grand jury, Ms. Cole," Agent Vance said coldly, motioning for his team to bag the computer hardware as primary evidence. "Daniel Mercer, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, tax evasion, conspiracy, and attempted destruction of evidence."

As Daniel was dragged past Claire, his eyes burned with raw, unadulterated hatred. "You think you've won?" he hissed into her ear. "You think taking the company leaves you safe? You have no idea who I was doing business with, Claire. Marcus Vale isn't just a dirty contractor. If I go down, he goes down—and he will kill you before he lets you testify."

Claire didn't flinch. She leaned in closer to Daniel, her breath warm against his frozen skin. "Marcus Vale was arrested twenty minutes ago at O'Hare Airport trying to board a private jet to Dubai. I sent his flight manifest to the authorities two hours before I came here."

Daniel stared at her in utter horror as the elevator doors closed, taking him down toward a prison cell. Claire stood alone in the center of the server room, listening to the rain beat against the glass, knowing that while the first battle was over, the war for her son's safety had only just begun.
