Chapter 9 - The First Board Meeting

The first board meeting of Callaway Holdings after the lease renegotiation was held on December 15th at their corporate headquarters in Charlotte.
I arrived early, wearing a tailored black suit and a simple silver necklace that had belonged to my mother. I carried a single leather portfolio.
As I walked into the reception area, I saw Camille standing near the elevators. She looked thin, her face pale and drawn. When she saw me, she froze, her fingers tightening around her coffee cup.
"Sable," she said, her voice barely a whisper.
"Camille," I nodded, keeping my expression professional and neutral. "How is your son?"
She blinked, surprised by the question. "He’s... he’s well. Thank you."
"Good," I said, stepping past her. "Every child deserves to be cared for, Camille. Even the ones whose fathers are too busy protecting their empires to hold them."
She didn't reply.
When I entered the boardroom, the atmosphere was thick with tension. The board members were already seated, their faces quiet and defensive. Preston Callaway sat at the head of the table, looking defeated. Weston sat next to him, his eyes bloodshot, his hands trembling slightly as he organized his papers.
I took my seat at the middle of the table, directly opposite Weston.
"Let’s begin," Preston said, his voice flat. "Our first item of business is the introduction of our new board member, Sable Reed."
A polite, shallow murmur of applause ran through the room.
"Thank you," I said, opening my portfolio. "As my first action as a board member, I would like to call for a comprehensive forensic audit of all development expenses for the Florida project."
The room went entirely silent.
Weston’s head snapped up, his gray eyes wide with alarm. "A forensic audit? On what basis?"
"On the basis of a ten million dollar discrepancy in the development ledger," I said, pulling a spreadsheet from my folder and sliding it across the table. "I’ve spent the last two weeks reviewing the public filings and the general ledger for the Florida project, Weston. It seems that several sub-contracts were awarded to a shell company registered in Delaware—Russo Development LLC."
I looked at Camille, who was sitting near the wall. She looked as though she might faint.
"And that shell company," I continued, "is registered to Camille Russo's brother. Over three million dollars was transferred to that entity over the last twelve months for consulting services that were never performed."
"This is ridiculous!" Weston stood up, his face red. "This is a personal vendetta! Sable is using her position on the board to target my family!"
"No, Weston," I said, my voice steady and cold. "This is an audit. And as a board member, I have a fiduciary duty to protect the shareholders against embezzlement and corporate fraud. If the board does not approve this audit, I will be forced to report these findings to the Securities and Exchange Commission tomorrow morning."
Preston Callaway looked at his son, then at Camille, and finally at me. The white-haired patriarch looked suddenly very old, very tired, and completely beaten.
"The board will vote," Preston whispered, his voice cracking. "All those in favor of the audit?"
May you like
Twelve hands went up slowly around the table.
Weston’s hand stayed down. He sank back into his chair, his face pale, his eyes hollow as he realized his empire was finally beginning to collapse.
