Chapter 8 - The Falling Dominos

December 1st was a Tuesday.

The hours ticked by with an agonizing, beautiful slowness. In Savannah, the rain was falling in a steady, gray sheet, washing the cobblestone streets clean. Odette and I sat in the living room, drinking hot chocolate while Marlo slept in her swing.

At ten o'clock that evening, my phone rang.

It was George Vance.

"Sable," he said, his voice filled with a quiet, triumphant satisfaction. "They signed."

I let out a long, slow breath. "Both terms?"

"Yes. The five hundred percent lease increase is fully executed, with the first payment already wired to the trust’s account. And the resolution appointing you to the board of directors of Callaway Holdings has been passed by a unanimous vote of the board."

"And the lawsuit?"

"Dismissed with prejudice," George smiled. "They have no legal recourse left. You are now the single largest land creditor of the company, and you hold a voting seat on their board."

"Thank you, George," I said. "My grandfather would be proud."

"Your grandfather is smiling down on us, Sable," George said. "But the real work begins now. You have a board seat. You need to use it."

"I will," I said, looking toward the parlor where my daughter was sleeping. "I’m just getting started."
