Chapter 7 - The Midnight Run

The rain was a blinding, freezing sheet of needles that soaked them to the bone within seconds. Clara scrambled into the driver's seat of the SUV, her hands covered in blood and rain, shaking so violently she could barely insert the key into the ignition.

"Lock the doors, Leo! Lock them now!" she screamed.

Leo hit the lock button just as Julian slammed against the passenger side window. His face was a terrifying, distorted mask of rage in the darkness, his fists hammering against the glass.

"Clara! Open this door! I will kill you!" he roared, his voice drowned out by the thunder, but his intent crystal clear.

Clara slammed the car into reverse. The tires spun on the wet gravel, throwing mud into the air, before catching traction. She backed out of the driveway at breakneck speed, narrowly missing the stone pillars of the gate, and threw the car into drive.

She floored the accelerator, the SUV roaring down the dark, winding roads of Whispering Pines Lane.

In the passenger seat, Leo was sobbing quietly, his knees pulled to his chest. Clara reached over with her bloody right hand, gripping his shoulder.

"We're okay, baby. We're okay. He can't get us now," she gasped, her eyes locked on the dark road ahead.

But as she looked in the rearview mirror, her heart plummeted. Two headlights had appeared behind them. They were moving fast, aggressively, closing the gap between them with terrifying speed.

It was Julian's sports car.

"He's following us," Leo whimpered, looking back.

"Hold on, Leo," Clara said, her voice dropping into a hard, cold focus. The terror was still there, but it was now entirely overridden by the survival instinct of a mother protecting her child.

She navigated the slick, winding curves of the suburban roads, the headlights behind her getting closer and closer. Julian was trying to run them off the road. He rammed the back of her SUV, the impact sending a violent jolt through the car.

"Mom!" Leo screamed.

"Hold on!"

Clara pulled her burner phone from her purse, throwing it into Leo's lap. "Leo, dial the number saved under 'Maya'! Tell her we are being chased by Julian on Route 15!"

Leo's trembling fingers unlocked the phone and hit dial. "Maya! Maya, help us! My dad is trying to crash our car!"

Clara swerved to avoid a sharp curve, the SUV’s tires skidding dangerously close to the steep ditch on the side of the road. Julian’s car pulled up alongside them, trying to force them into the oncoming lane. Through the rain-speckled window, Clara could see Julian’s face—devoid of any humanity, driven by a psychotic need for absolute control.

Suddenly, a loud, wailing siren pierced the night.

Ahead of them, two police cruisers swerved onto the highway, their red and blue lights flashing brilliantly, blindingly in the darkness. Maya had called ahead.

Clara slammed on the brakes, bringing the SUV to a halting skid. Julian, traveling too fast on the slick road, couldn't stop in time. His sports car spun out of control, crashing violently into a metal guardrail.

The sound of twisting metal and shattering glass echoed through the rain.

Clara sat frozen in the driver's seat, her chest heaving, watching as police officers rushed from their cruisers, their weapons drawn, surrounding Julian's wrecked vehicle.

She pulled Leo into her arms, holding him so tight she could feel his heartbeat against her own. They were shaking, they were bruised, they were terrified.

But they were alive. And they were free.
