Chapter 5 - The Silent Camera

The next morning, Clara met Maya at their usual spot. She slid the USB drive across the table, her hands still trembling from the residual adrenaline of the night before.

"Is this it?" Maya asked, her eyes wide with hope.

"It has the footage from the living room and kitchen cameras for the last three months," Clara whispered. "Including the night of the dinner party. The night he hit me."

Maya plugged the drive into her laptop, putting in her headphones. Clara watched her face. As Maya watched the footage, her expression hardened from professional focus to pure, unadulterated horror. She closed the laptop slowly, looking up at Clara with a mixture of deep empathy and fierce determination.

"Clara, this is devastating," Maya said softly. "It's also exactly what we need. This isn't just a dispute over custody; this is a criminal record of felony domestic abuse. No judge in this state—no matter how friendly they are with Julian—will be able to ignore this."

"So we can leave?" Clara asked, a desperate hope rising in her chest. "We can just take Leo and go?"

"We have to be strategic," Maya cautioned, leaning in. "If you just run, Julian will immediately file an emergency order for kidnapping. He will use his connections with the local police to track you down before we can get this before a judge. We need to file a secret, ex-parte restraining order and a custody motion simultaneously. We do it on a Friday afternoon, right before the courts close for the weekend, so he can't get a counter-order until Monday. During those three days, you and Leo will be in a secure, undisclosed shelter."

"When do we do it?"

"Next Friday," Maya said. "Can you survive one more week, Clara?"

Clara closed her eyes, thinking of the bruises on her body, the terror in Leo's eyes, and the suffocating weight of the house. "I can survive anything for one week if it means my son is safe."

"Okay," Maya said, squeezing her hand. "Pack only what you absolutely need. No suitcases—Julian will notice. Just put essentials in Leo's school backpack and your purse over the course of the week. On Friday morning, drop Leo off at school. Instead of going home, meet me at my office. We will file the paperwork, pick up Leo from school together with a police escort, and go straight to the shelter."

It was a perfect plan. But Clara knew that when dealing with a monster like Julian, nothing ever went perfectly.
