Chapter 7

Chapter 7: The Trial of Truth
The legal battle was brief but brutal. The corporate board attempted to declare Daniel unfit, citing his sudden abandonment of his duties and his association with a woman legally declared dead. They wanted to freeze his assets to protect the company's valuation.
The deposition took place not in a grand courtroom, but in a neutral conference room in the county seat. Six lawyers in charcoal suits sat on one side of the glass table; Daniel sat on the other, alone. He had refused his own legal team.
"Mr. Hargrove," the lead attorney, a sharp man named Vance whom Daniel had hired years ago, began. "We need to understand the nature of your current living situation. Is it your contention that Mrs. Elena Hargrove did not die in the accident five years ago?"
"She is alive," Daniel said clearly.
"And you were unaware of this until recently?"
"Yes."
"And the boy, Leo? You claim he is your biological son, conceived prior to the separation?"
"He is my son," Daniel said, his hand resting firmly on the table.
Vance sighed, leaning forward. "Daniel, look at the optics. It looks like fraud. It looks like you helped her disappear to hide assets or evade corporate restructuring. If we go to trial, they will drag her name through the mud. They will call her an opportunist. They will call your son a bastard."
The temperature in the room plummeted. Daniel didn't raise his voice, but the intensity in his eyes made Vance flinch.
"If you mention my family again in that tone, Vance, I will buy your firm just to fire you before lunch," Daniel said. "I am resigning as CEO, effective immediately. I am relinquishing my voting rights. The shares will be placed in a blind trust managed by an independent third party. The company is yours. The money is yours. But if any of your people come within ten miles of that house, or that school, I will use every resource I have left to destroy you. Am I making myself clear?"
The lawyers looked at each other. They had expected a fight for control, a desperate grasp for power. They didn't know how to handle a man who was handing them the keys to the kingdom just to be left alone.

Vance slid the resignation papers across the table. "Sign here."
Daniel took the pen, signed his name with a single, smooth stroke, and stood up. He walked out of the room without looking back.
