Chapter 6: The Unraveling Thread

While Daniel was discovering his son’s world, his old life was refusing to decay in silence. By the third week, investigative journalists had tracked him down. The story of a reclusive billionaire living in a rural cottage with a wife presumed dead was too valuable a headline to ignore.

A local reporter, a young man named Carter, intercepted Daniel at the town's small grocery store.

"Mr. Hargrove! Carter from the State Ledger," the reporter said, thrusting a digital recorder toward Daniel’s face. "Is it true your wife faked her death? Are there tax implications regarding her estate? The SEC is looking into the transfer of your shares last week."

Daniel didn't stop walking. He placed a carton of milk and a loaf of bread into his basket. "No comment."

"Your shareholders are calling for a mental competency hearing, sir," Carter pressed, following him down the aisle. "They think you've had a breakdown."

Daniel stopped. He turned slowly, using his height and the residual weight of his old persona to pin the reporter in place. The air in the aisle seemed to drop several degrees.

"Young man," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a whisper that was louder than a shout. "For thirty years, I gave my life to a collection of numbers on a screen. If those shareholders think that preferring my family over their profit margins makes me incompetent, they are welcome to vote me out. Now, please move. I have to get home before the milk spoils."

The reporter froze, intimidated by the sheer gravity of the man, and allowed Daniel to pass.

When Daniel returned to the cottage, he found Elena sitting at the table, several legal documents spread before her. Her face was pale.

"They're coming for us, aren't they?" she asked. "The lawyers. The press."

Daniel set the groceries down and sat beside her. He took her hand—the first time he had done so since his return. Her skin was cold, but she didn't pull away.

"They are coming for the money, Elena," Daniel said. "But the money is just paper. I've instructed my attorneys to liquidate my personal trusts and set up an independent foundation for Leo. The rest can go to the board. Let them have the empire. I'm tearing down the walls."

Elena looked at him, tears finally brimming in her eyes. "You spent your whole life building those walls, Daniel."

"And they kept me entirely alone," he replied.
