Chapter 3

Chapter 3: The Relic of the Past

I turned slowly. My eyes locked onto the woman in the wedding dress.

She stumbled backward, crying floods of tears, her shoulders shaking. "You have to believe me… I only wanted to protect our image…"

"YOU LOCKED UP A TERRIFIED CHILD JUST TO PROTECT YOUR DAMN IMAGE?!" I hissed, every word sharp as a blade.

I took a step toward her, ready to wrench the key from her hands. But in that exact instant, my eyes caught something. My gaze fell upon the wrist of the boy who was clinging to the maid.

An old, braided cord bracelet. And dangling from it… a tiny silver cross.

My heart stopped beating. The oxygen suddenly vanished from the room.

That silver cross… I knew it. Years ago, my bride had told me through tears that she had lost it on a stormy night. The very same night she claimed her firstborn son had "vanished and died."
