Chapter 9 - THE PHANTOM COMMANDERZ

The Paris catacombs were cold, damp, and smelled of centuries-old earth and bone.
I ran through the winding, dark stone tunnels, guided only by the narrow beam of my tactical flashlight. Skulls and thigh bones stacked in neat, terrifying walls lined the passages on either side of me, silent witnesses to my escape.
Clutched in my left hand was a heavy, waterproof tactical smartphone—the Vanguard encrypted satellite master terminal my grandfather had left on the mantle of the escape hatch.
After three miles of navigating the dark labyrinth beneath the city, I emerged from a rusted maintenance grate into an abandoned rail yard near the Gare du Nord.
Rain beat down relentlessly upon my face as I climbed out into the cold night air, coughing up the bitter taste of gunpowder and smoke.
I sat on a pile of wooden railway ties beneath the shelter of an overpass, my knees trembling, my clothes soaked with sweat and rain.
My grandfather was dead. My father was dead. My brother was rotting in a federal prison cell.
The Vance family line had been systematically torn to shreds by greed, ambition, and the terrible weight of secret wars.
I stared at the black screen of the satellite phone in my hand.
Slowly, the screen flickered to life. A single prompt appeared in glowing white text against the black background:
BIOMETRIC AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED. ENTER COMMANDER ACCESS CODE.
I pressed my thumb against the glass screen. A green laser line scanned my fingerprint.
AUTHENTICATING... MATCH CONFIRMED: VANCE, CLARISSA (COLONEL, U.S. ARMY / RETIRED).
WELCOME, COMMANDER.
The screen instantly shifted into a complex, dark-mode interface displaying encrypted global communications networks, active asset locations, and offshore bank balances totaling over four hundred million dollars.
A notification began flashing at the top of the interface:
PRIORITY 1 INCOMING ENCRYPTED VOICE TRANSMISSION FROM: AGENT FALCON (BALTIC SEA TACTICAL TEAM).
I took a deep breath, cold rain running off my chin, and pressed the green accept button, raising the device to my ear.
"Command," a sharp, professional female voice spoke through the secure line, background wind noise indicating she was aboard a vessel at sea. "This is Falcon. We lost communication with Paris bunker during the DGSE breach. Is General Marcus operational?"
I hesitated for a single second. The memory of my military oath flashed through my mind, along with the memory of the hospital operating room in Kandahar, the bloody scalpel, the face of Harrison Reed, and my grandfather’s final war cry in the burning bunker.
I was no longer Colonel Clarissa Vance, military surgeon for the United States Army.
I was the phantom commander of the dark world.
"General Vance is dead," I said, my voice steady, merciless, and colder than the rain falling around me. "Command has passed to me. What is your status, Falcon?"
There was a brief pause on the line as the operative digested the news. "Understood, Commander. We are currently trailing the rogue Russian transport vessel carrying the two stolen tactical nuclear warheads through the Gulf of Finland. They are scheduled to dock in Kaliningrad in six hours. Official NATO naval forces are refusing to intercept due to diplomatic restrictions. Orders?"
I looked down at my hands. They were no longer shaking.
"Interception authorized," I commanded without a second of hesitation. "Execute board-and-seize protocols. Eliminate all hostile crew members. Secure the nuclear payload and scuttle the transport vessel in deep water. Leave no survivors, and leave no Vanguard signatures."
"Copy that, Commander," Falcon replied with absolute, disciplined execution in her voice. "Moving to engage now."
The line went dead.
I stood up from the railway ties, putting the satellite phone deep into my coat pocket.
I walked through the dark rail yard toward the glowing lights of the Paris streets ahead. I had spent my entire life trying to save lives on operating tables, fighting against death with sterile steel and bandages.

Now, I was going to save lives by operating in the dark—cutting out the cancer of global corruption before it could destroy the world.
My grandfather had passed the torch, and though it was forged in treason and blood, I would wield it with absolute, unyielding precision.
