Chapter 10 - THE ARCHITECTS OF WARZ

Six months later.

Geneva, Switzerland.

The private estate overlooking Lake Geneva was bathed in the soft, golden light of late summer sunset. White swans glided across the crystal-clear waters, framing a grand stone mansion protected by high iron gates, private security guards, and automated surveillance towers.

Inside the opulent dining room, seven men and women sat around a long mahogany table, dining on fine caviar and vintage French wine. They were the elite—former directors of intelligence agencies, defense CEOs, active European ministers, and high-ranking members of the United States Senate Armed Services Committee.

They were The Architects—the hidden council that Harrison Reed and Arthur Vance had served, the shadow syndicate that generated billions of dollars in profit by orchestrating controlled geopolitical conflicts around the globe.

Sitting at the head of the table was Senator Richard Sterling, a distinguished, silver-haired politician from Virginia who was widely tipped to run for the presidency in the upcoming election.

"A toast," Senator Sterling said, raising his crystal glass of champagne. "To the complete resolution of the Vance Logistics disaster. The federal grand jury in Washington has concluded its business. Julian Vance is locked away, Harrison Reed is buried, and General Marcus Vance’s illegal network was burned to ash in Paris six months ago."

The members of the council raised their glasses, smiling warmly, clinking crystal in celebration.

"What about the daughter?" asked an executive from a major European defense firm. "Clarissa Vance? The army surgeon who started the whole chain reaction?"

Sterling chuckled dismissively, taking a sip of his champagne. "Clarissa Vance vanished into thin air after the Paris raid. Federal authorities believe she drowned in the Paris catacombs or escaped to South America under a false identity. She’s a non-entity. A broken military doctor with no resources, no allies, and no power."

Suddenly, the heavy crystal chandelier hanging above the dining table flickered once, twice, and went completely dark.

The ambient lights in the room turned off, plunging the grand dining room into near-total blackness. Emergency backup generators failed to kick on.

"What is the meaning of this?" Sterling demanded, standing up from his chair. "Security!"

Outside the tall glass French doors leading to the terrace, the private security guards patrolling the grounds dropped to the grass one by one, silently taken down by invisible, suppressed fire in the darkness.

The heavy oak doors of the dining room swung open slowly.

A single figure walked into the dark room, illuminated only by the pale moonlight streaming through the terrace windows.

I wore a tailored black tactical suit, my tactical coat moving softly in the evening breeze. In my right hand, I carried a high-caliber suppressed pistol. In my left hand, I held my grandfather’s silver lighter.

The seven members of the council gasped, backing away from the table in sheer panic.

"Clarissa Vance..." Senator Sterling breathed, his face draining of all color, his champagne glass slipping from his fingers and shattering against the hardwood floor.

"Good evening, Senator," I said, my voice smooth, quiet, and deadly calm.

I walked slowly toward the head of the table, my combat boots making no sound on the floorboards.

"How... how did you get in here?!" Sterling stammered, backing up against the fireplace mantle. "This estate is protected by sixty private military contractors!"

"Your contractors were paid through Vanguard shell accounts," I said, stopping at the edge of the mahogany table. "They work for me now."

I placed my grandfather’s silver lighter on the table, flicked the wheel, and let the small, steady flame illuminate the terrified faces of the most powerful people in the Western defense establishment.

"You thought General Marcus Vance was the threat," I said softly, looking at each of them in turn. "You thought if you used Reed to manipulate Arthur, and used the FBI to destroy Marcus, you could reclaim control of Vanguard’s shadow network and keep selling wars for profit."

"Clarissa, listen to us!" another council member, a retired admiral, pleaded, raising his hands in surrender. "We can give you anything you want! Power, position, hundreds of millions of dollars! You don't have to do this!"

I looked at the admiral, my eyes cold and unyielding.

"I don't want your money, Admiral," I said. "And I don't want your power. I spent ten years in combat hospitals sewing up young men and women who were ripped apart by your profit margins."

I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small black flash drive, setting it beside the burning silver lighter.

"On this drive is every financial record, every encrypted wiretap, and every recorded conversation between this council and hostile foreign governments over the last fifteen years," I said. "In thirty seconds, this file will be simultaneously broadcast to every major news outlet, federal prosecutor, and international tribunal on Earth."

Senator Sterling’s eyes widened with pure horror. "You'll destroy the entire political stability of the Western world! It will cause economic collapse!"

"No," I replied, raising my suppressed Beretta and leveling it directly at Sterling’s chest. "It will cause justice."

"You're a doctor!" Sterling shrieked, cowering against the mantle. "You took an oath to do no harm!"

I stared down the sights of my weapon, my heart cold as glacial ice, my mind totally clear.

"I took an oath to remove the infection," I whispered. "And you are the stage four cancer."

THWACK.

The suppressed shot echoed softly through the quiet room.

Outside the grand estate, rain began to fall gently over Lake Geneva, washing away the dirt of the old world as the phantom army of the dark moved forward to rewrite the future.
