Chapter 2 - Shadows of the BoardroomZ

The air inside the grand study of the Warren Manor turned instantly subzero. The ticking of the antique mahogany grandfather clock sounded like a slow, rhythmic drum beating out a countdown to violence.
Spencer Warren did not move a muscle, but every drop of blood in his veins burned with fury. His eyes shifted from the trembling, blood-bruised form of Jocelyn Cooper, crouching behind his heavy oak desk, to the distinguished figure standing in the doorway.
Marshall Ward—his chief legal counselor, his late father’s closest confidant, and the man who held the master keys to the entire Warren Financial Empire—stood impeccably dressed in a charcoal bespoke suit. But Charlee’s trembling finger was pointed directly at Marshall’s feet. At the spotless, custom-made white leather sneakers he wore for his weekend commutes. The exact footwear the seven-year-old girl had spotted lingering near the frozen, rain-soaked dumpsters where baby Dexter had been left to die.
"Marshall," Spencer said, his voice dropping into a register so low and dangerous it startled even Mrs. Mabel, who watched from the kitchen hallway. "Care to explain why your designer shoes are covered in dried mud from my outer estate fence?"
Marshall’s refined facade didn't break immediately. Instead, a chilling, practiced smile spread across his face. He adjusted his silk tie, stepped fully into the room, and closed the heavy mahogany doors behind him.
"Spencer, my boy," Marshall began, his tone dripping with smooth, patronizing warmth. "You are running on zero sleep, grieving your sudden realization about your father's past, and letting emotional hysteria govern your logical mind. Are you honestly going to take the word of a homeless, traumatized orphan over the man who has protected your family's billions for thirty years?"
"I am taking the word of a child who saved my son’s life," Spencer growled, stepping forward to put himself between Marshall and the two women in the room. "And I recognized your voice on that recording, Marshall. Don't lie to me. You told Pamela Ortiz to eliminate the child before a genetic screen could prove his lineage."
Marshall sighed softly, shaking his head as if disappointed in a star pupil. He reached inside his tailored jacket, and for a terrifying second, Jocelyn screamed, thinking he was pulling a weapon. Instead, he pulled out a thick leather portfolio and laid it flat on the glass coffee table.
"You always were too sentimental for your own good, Spencer. Just like your mother," Marshall said, his voice shedding its warmth, revealing an icy, predatory core. "Do you have any idea what happens to Warren Financial stock the moment the press confirms that you—the sole controlling trustee—have fathered a child using illicitly obtained genetic material with a woman whose family holds a twenty-percent hostile stake in our rival conglomerate?"
Jocelyn gasped, clutching her chest. "What... what are you talking about?"
Spencer froze. "Jocelyn... Cooper."
"Ah, the pieces finally click!" Marshall sneered, pacing the room like a panther. "Jocelyn isn't just some desperate, random patient who paid Dr. Ortiz under the table for a high-end baby. She is the runaway daughter of Arthur Cooper, the CEO of Apex Global. The very firm trying to execute a hostile takeover of Warren Financial!"
Marshall slammed his palm onto the desk, making the crystal decanters rattle. "If the public finds out that the heir to the Warren legacy is half-Cooper, our board will panic! Millions of shares will be dumped! The merger will collapse, and we will be bankrupt by Friday! I didn't order that child removed out of malice, Spencer. I did it to save this company from absolute extinction!"
"You tried to murder an innocent newborn to protect stock prices!" Spencer roared, lunging forward and grabbing Marshall by his lapels, slamming the older lawyer against the wall.
"I did what your father would have done!" Marshall hissed right back into Spencer’s face, unbothered by the physical threat. "Your father ruined Florence’s life and abandoned Daisy to protect this name! I am simply finishing the work he started. And if you think you can stop me, look at the legal papers in my briefcase. As head of the board's emergency committee, I have already filed an ex-parte motion with the district court. You are being stripped of your executive powers due to emotional instability."
Before Spencer could throw a punch, the door swung open. Casey, the child welfare worker, stood in the doorway alongside two armed local police officers.
"Mr. Warren! Put him down!" Casey demanded, her eyes wide with shock as she took in the chaotic scene—Jocelyn weeping on the floor, Charlee hiding behind a velvet curtain, and Spencer holding his top lawyer by the throat.
"Officer, thank God," Marshall coughed smoothly, adjusting his collar as Spencer reluctantly let him go. "As you can see, Mr. Warren is experiencing a severe psychological breakdown. He has brought an unverified woman and two undocumented children into his home, and he just physically assaulted his own legal counsel."
"That's not true!" Charlee yelled, breaking away from the curtain and running toward Casey. "That bad man tried to hurt Dexter! He was at the trash can! I saw him!"
Casey looked torn, her professional skepticism battling with the obvious terror in Charlee's eyes. "Mr. Warren, I received an anonymous tip that a fugitive—Jocelyn Cooper, who was reported missing by her family three days ago—was hiding on your property. I need everyone to step back. The police need to secure this room."
Jocelyn scrambled to her feet, her eyes wide with sheer panic. "No! Please! If my father finds out I'm here, he'll take Dexter away forever! He framed me! He made everyone think I was unfit so he could use my baby as leverage against Spencer!"
"Silence!" Marshall commanded, turning to the officers. "Arrest that woman for trespassing and endangerment, and place the infant into state custody immediately."
"Over my dead body," Spencer said softly, stepping into a defensive stance.
The police officers drew their tasers. The tension in the room snapped like a high-tension cable.
Suddenly, a loud, piercing alarm blared through the manor. The smart-home security panel on the wall flashed bright red, displaying a warning message: PERIMETER BREACH - GATE 1 DESTROYED.
Outside, the heavy roar of multiple heavy SUVs echoed through the rainy night, followed by the blinding sweep of high-powered floodlights cutting through the study’s floor-to-ceiling windows. Heavy boots stomped onto the stone porch outside.
"What is that?!" Casey gasped, backing away toward the hallway.
The heavy mahogany doors were suddenly shoved open from the outside, nearly knocking the police officers off their feet. A line of private security contractors clad in tactical gear flooded the foyer, weapon lights cutting through the dim house. Behind them walked a towering, silver-haired man in a full trench coat, his face carved out of stone.
Arthur Cooper. The CEO of Apex Global, and Jocelyn's billionaire father.
"Stand down, everyone," Arthur’s booming voice commanded, echoing off the high ceilings. He swept his cold gaze across the room, ignoring the police officers entirely, until his eyes landed on Jocelyn, then on Spencer, and finally on the sleeping baby held tightly in Mrs. Mabel’s arms near the kitchen doorway.
"Father..." Jocelyn whispered, trembling uncontrollably.
"You’ve brought disgrace to our family, Jocelyn," Arthur said coldly, pulling off his leather gloves. "Stealing genetic material from our greatest corporate rival to produce a bastard heir? A pathetic stunt."
"I loved him!" Jocelyn screamed, her voice cracking. "I didn't care about your corporate wars! I wanted a child, and Spencer was the only man I ever trusted!"
Arthur didn't even blink. He turned his gaze to Spencer. "Mr. Warren. You have something that belongs to my family. And I am here to take it back—along with control of your board."
Marshall Ward stepped forward, a triumphant smirk returning to his face as he walked toward Arthur. "Arthur. Right on time. As we agreed, the custody paperwork transferring the child to Apex legal guardianship is ready for your signature."
Spencer looked between Marshall and Arthur, the horrifying reality crashing over him like a tidal wave. Marshall hadn't just acted alone to save Warren Financial—he had made a secret deal with their worst enemy to sell out Spencer, betray the board, and hand over little Dexter in exchange for a massive payout and immunity.
"You sold us out," Spencer said to Marshall, his knuckles turning white.
"It’s just business, Spencer," Marshall chuckled softly. "It always has been."
Charlee squeezed Spencer’s hand tightly, her small fingers trembling, but her voice was steady. "Uncle Spencer... what do we do?"
Spencer looked down at his young niece, then at his newborn son in the housekeeper's arms, and felt a surge of unbreakable resolve. He was no longer just a cold, isolated businessman hiding behind his fortune. He was a father. He was an uncle. And he was done letting monsters ruin his family.

"Mrs. Mabel," Spencer called out, his voice ringing clear through the chaos. "Take the children into the panic room. Now."
Before Arthur’s security team could react, Spencer smashed the emergency glass on the wall control panel, triggering a cascading lockdown. Heavy steel security shutters slammed down over every window and door, plunging the mansion into a fierce standoff.
