CHAPTER 8: The Box With Elena’s Name

For several seconds, no one touched the metal box.

Lily stared at her mother’s name written across the top in Isabella’s elegant handwriting.

Elena Sinclair.

A name Lily had spent her whole life trying to hold onto with fading memories and secondhand stories.

Now it sat in front of her like a wound reopened.

Vincent’s voice was low.

“Open it.”

Lucia smiled sadly.

“You should be careful, Vincent. Some truths do not heal. They only explain why the wound was there.”

Lily stepped forward.

“No more riddles.”

Lucia looked at her for a long moment.

Then she handed her the key.

It was small, silver, and shaped like a rose thorn.

Lily’s fingers trembled as she inserted it into the lock.

The box clicked open.

Inside were three things.

A sealed letter.

A flash drive.

And a folded white cloth stained faintly with old blood.

Lily’s breath caught.

Lucia touched the cloth with two fingers.

“That was your mother’s.”

Lily looked up.

“How did she die?”

Lucia’s face hardened.

“Protecting Isabella’s will.”

Vincent went still.

“Isabella had a will?”

Lucia looked at him.

“She had more than a will.”

Marco whispered, “A testimony.”

Lucia nodded.

“She knew someone inside the Moretti council was planning to remove Matteo from the line of succession.”

Vincent’s eyes turned cold.

“Matteo was three years old.”

“Yes,” Lucia said. “And already worth more alive or dead than most men in this family.”

Lily’s stomach twisted.

She thought of Matteo holding his toy airplane.

Matteo crying when she left the room.

Matteo asking her not to become a ghost.

Vincent stepped closer to Lucia.

“Who?”

Lucia picked up the flash drive.

“Isabella named him.”

Vincent reached for it.

Lucia pulled it back.

“No.”

His jaw clenched.

Lucia did not flinch.

“If you watch this as a grieving husband, you will hear only betrayal. If you watch it as Matteo’s father, you may survive what comes next.”

Lily placed a hand gently on Vincent’s arm.

He looked at her.

The fury in his face did not vanish, but it lowered enough for him to breathe.

Lucia plugged the flash drive into an old monitor hidden inside the sitting room cabinet.

The screen flickered.

For one second, there was only darkness.

Then Isabella appeared.

Alive.

Beautiful.

Pale.

Sitting in this very room, wearing a white blouse, her dark hair loose around her shoulders. She looked tired, but her eyes were sharp.

Vincent stopped moving.

Lily heard the sound leave his chest.

Isabella looked directly into the camera.

“If you are watching this, then I am either dead or they have finally made me look mad enough that nobody listens.”

Vincent closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

“Vincent, I am sorry. I tried to tell you, but every time I came close, the room changed. Men stopped speaking. Servants disappeared. Documents moved. And you kept trusting the one person who taught you never to question family.”

Marco’s face went gray.

Vincent opened his eyes.

On screen, Isabella swallowed.

“The Romano woman is not the root. Bianca is useful because everyone believes revenge makes people predictable. But Bianca was paid. Guided. Protected.”

Lily whispered, “By who?”

Isabella’s eyes filled with tears.

“By Salvatore Greco.”

The room froze.

Vincent staggered back as if the name had physically struck him.

Lucia looked at him with something almost like pity.

Salvatore Greco.

Vincent’s godfather.

The man who had stood beside Vincent after his father died.

The man who held Matteo at Isabella’s funeral.

The man who advised Vincent on every war, every treaty, every alliance.

The old wolf of the Moretti council.

Vincent’s voice was barely human.

“No.”

Isabella’s recording continued.

“Salvatore believes Vincent is too controlled by love. First by me. Then by Matteo. He wants the Moretti line under council authority, not blood. If Matteo dies, Salvatore becomes regent. If Vincent breaks, Salvatore rules through grief.”

Lily covered her mouth.

Lucia’s eyes glistened.

“Elena discovered it,” Isabella said. “She heard Salvatore discussing Matteo’s future with Bianca’s people. She tried to run with proof. I helped her. That is why they came for her.”

Lily’s knees weakened.

Vincent caught her before she fell.

Isabella leaned closer to the camera.

“Vincent, if you still have mercy in you, do not let my death turn you into Salvatore’s weapon. And if Elena’s daughter is alive…”

Isabella’s voice broke.

“Protect Lily. Not because she is useful. Because Elena saved our son once before anyone knew he needed saving.”

The recording ended.

The room remained silent.

Then Vincent’s phone rang.

Marco answered.

His face changed.

“Vincent.”

Vincent turned.

Marco’s voice shook.

“Salvatore is at the estate.”

Lily’s blood went cold.

May you like

Marco swallowed.

“He is with Matteo.”
