Chapter 10

CHAPTER 10: The Maid Who Heard Everything

Isabella’s second testimony began with no music, no drama, no warning.

Just her face.

Her voice.

Her truth.

“My name is Isabella Moretti. If this recording has been released, then Salvatore Greco has entered my son’s room.”

Across the nursery, Salvatore stopped breathing.

Vincent looked at Lily.

She looked back at him, tears shining in her eyes.

Isabella had predicted everything.

On screen, Isabella continued.

“Salvatore taught Vincent that loyalty meant obedience. He taught him grief was useful. He taught him fear was the language of power. But power was never his end. Matteo was.”

Matteo clung to Vincent’s neck.

Vincent held him so tightly his hands trembled.

The recording shifted.

Images appeared.

Bank transfers.

Messages.

Photographs of Bianca meeting Salvatore’s men years before the first attack.

Security logs from the night Isabella died.

Medical reports.

A payment made to a doctor who signed Isabella’s final health clearance.

Lucia covered her mouth.

Marco whispered, “God forgive us.”

Salvatore turned slowly toward Lily.

“You have no idea what you have done.”

Lily’s voice was steady.

“I know exactly what I’ve done.”

“No,” he said. “You have shattered the old order.”

Vincent stepped forward.

“Good.”

Salvatore looked at him.

“You think love will hold an empire? You think this maid, this girl from nowhere, will protect your son from men who were born into war?”

Vincent’s eyes hardened.

“She already did.”

Salvatore’s jaw tightened.

“Because she keeps throwing herself in front of danger. That is not protection. That is luck waiting to run out.”

Lily flinched.

Because some part of her feared he was right.

Vincent saw it.

He turned to her.

“No.”

Lily looked at him.

His voice softened, even with enemies in the room.

“You are not valuable because you bleed for us.”

Her lips trembled.

“You have to stop treating your life like the price of being loved.”

The words struck her harder than any wound.

For years, Lily had believed love meant sacrifice until nothing was left.

Her father.

Emma.

Matteo.

Vincent.

Always someone to protect.

Always a reason to step in front of the harm.

Vincent reached for her hand.

“This family doesn’t need you dead to prove you belong.”

Salvatore laughed coldly.

“How touching.”

Marco moved then.

Not toward Salvatore.

Toward his men.

“Lower your weapons.”

One of them hesitated.

Marco’s voice became deadly calm.

“Lower them, or be remembered as the men who chose Salvatore after Isabella named him.”

One by one, the weapons lowered.

Salvatore stared in disbelief.

“You answer to me.”

Marco shook his head.

“No. We answer to the family.”

Salvatore’s face twisted.

“I built this family.”

Vincent stepped forward, Matteo still in his arms.

“No. You fed on it.”

Outside, engines roared.

Cars.

Many of them.

Council families arriving after the broadcast.

Federal sirens following behind.

For the first time, Salvatore had no room left to hide.

But old wolves do not accept cages easily.

He lunged toward Lily.

Vincent moved, but Lily was faster.

Not with a weapon.

With the metal box.

She slammed it down across Salvatore’s hand as he reached for the flash drive.

He cried out and fell to one knee.

Marco’s men seized him instantly.

Lily stood over him, breathing hard.

Her face was pale.

Her body still recovering.

But her eyes were clear.

Salvatore looked up at her with hatred.

“You were nothing.”

Lily’s voice was quiet.

“That’s why you never watched me.”

The council arrived five minutes later.

They entered ready to command.

They left giving statements.

By dawn, Salvatore Greco was in federal custody, Bianca’s plea deal had expanded, and half the old Moretti network was burning from the inside.

But Lily did not celebrate.

She stood alone in the garden as the sun rose, Isabella’s box in her hands.

Vincent found her there.

Matteo was asleep inside under Lucia’s watch.

For once, the house was guarded by people who had chosen the truth.

Vincent stood beside Lily.

“You saved us again.”

She closed her eyes.

“Don’t say that.”

He understood.

So he said something else.

“You stayed.”

Lily looked at him.

May you like

He touched the ring on her hand.

“This time, that is enough.”
