Chapter 14 - Blood and Steel

Z

Three years later.

Spring had returned to New York City. The trees along Central Park were blooming in vibrant pinks and whites, filling the air with the fresh, sweet scent of new beginnings.

I stood on the balcony of a beautiful brownstone in Greenwich Village, watching the street below.

The Moretti Foundation was now the largest private benefactor of urban education and youth protection programs on the East Coast. Every penny of Gabriel’s shadow treasury had been laundered clean through legitimate municipal bonds and non-profit endowments. The name Moretti no longer evoked fear in the hearts of New York citizens; it represented hope.

Inside the house, nine-year-old Sofia was sitting at a grand piano, playing a classical piece with remarkable skill, while Maria sat beside her, gently guiding her hands over the keys.

Maria had taken over as the Chief Executive Officer of the foundation, managing its operations with the same brilliant, razor-sharp intellect that had once brought down Arthur Hale. We had become inseparable—partners in business, guardians of Sofia, and two souls who had found healing in the ashes of our shared trauma.

The front doorbell rang.

I stepped off the balcony and walked down the hallway to answer it.

Standing on the front porch was a young man in his early twenties, dressed in a delivery driver’s uniform. He held a small, heavy wooden box wrapped in brass wire.

"Daniel Moretti?" the boy asked.

"Yes," I replied, eyeing the box curiously.

"This was left at our distribution center in Brooklyn this morning," the boy said, handing me the box. "No return address, but the sender paid in cash and specified it had to be delivered to you personally."

I accepted the package, tipped the driver, and closed the door.

I walked into my private study, placing the box on my desk. I pulled a small silver pocketknife from my drawer and carefully cut the brass wire binding the lid.

Inside lay an old, yellowed newspaper clipping from 1988.

The headline read: GABRIEL MORETTI DISAPPEARS - EMPIRE COLLAPSES.

But beneath the newspaper clipping lay a modern digital tablet. As I touched the screen, it flickered to life, displaying a single video file.

I pressed play.

On the screen appeared a dimly lit room inside an elegant European villa. Sitting in a leather armchair was a man I had never seen before—a man in his mid-thirties with striking blue eyes and a cruel, familiar jawline.

"Hello, Daniel," the man said in a smooth, refined English accent that carried a terrifyingly familiar tone. "You don't know me, but my name is Julian. Julian Hale."

My blood ran cold. My breath hitched in my throat.

"Arthur Hale was a meticulous man," Julian continued on the recording, a slow, cold smile spreading across his face. "Did you really think you were his only son? Did you really believe he put all his trust in a boy who inherited Eleanor Moretti's weak, compassionate heart?"

Julian leaned forward toward the camera, his eyes burning with an intense, pathological hatred.

"Arthur raised me in London, Daniel. He kept me hidden from the FBI, from Gabriel, and from you. While you were playing the dutiful prince in New York, I was managing his offshore accounts in Switzerland and Singapore. You took his empire. You put him in a cage. And you let him die like a dog."

The man reached out, picking up an old silver signet ring—the exact twin of the ring my father used to wear.

"Enjoy your peace while it lasts, brother," Julian whispered into the camera. "Because I’m coming to New York to take back everything that belongs to the Hale bloodline."

The video screen went black.
