Chapter 10 - The Viper’s Nest

The silence in the room was heavier than the blizzard that had consumed Saranac Lake six months prior. I stared at the black flash drive resting on the polished oak table, then back at the woman who had lived under my roof, shared my meals, and claimed my protection.
"Elias..." I began, my voice dangerously soft.
"Elias was my husband, and I loved him," Maria cut in, her eyes burning with an icy, brilliant ambition. "But he was weak, Daniel. He believed in justice. He believed in the courts. He thought if we handed Arthur’s ledgers to the federal prosecutors, we could all live happily ever after in a little suburban house with a white picket fence."
She laughed—a dry, bitter sound that echoed through the high ceilings of the estate.
"I knew better," she continued. "I grew up in Chicago’s Outfit. My father was liquidated by Arthur Hale’s men when I was twelve years old. I knew that men like Arthur don't get stopped by judges or lockups. They only get stopped when someone takes away their oxygen—their money, their bloodline, and their power."
"So you used me," I said, stepping closer until I could smell the lavender perfume on her skin. "You used my mother’s name. You used your own daughter."
"I saved your life!" Maria snapped, her composure cracking for a fraction of a second. "Arthur was planning to have you assassinated in Chicago three years ago! Who do you think leaked his tactical comms to your security chief? Who do you think planted the doubts about Anthony Bellini in your mind? It was me, Daniel! I shaped you into the weapon that finally crushed Arthur Hale!"
"And the eighty million dollars?"
"Consider it my commission," she said coldly. "That money belonged to the Moretti foundation. Half of it goes to securing Sofia’s future. The other half goes toward making sure Gabriel Moretti’s old captains in Palermo stay retired."
A floorboard creaked near the hallway entrance.
Teresa Russo stepped into the light, holding a heavy iron walking stick. Her face was grim, carved out of stone, but her eyes held no surprise.
"You knew," I said, glancing at Teresa.
Teresa took a slow breath, resting both hands on her cane. "I am Elias’s mother, Daniel. Do you really think a mother doesn't know what her own son’s wife is capable of? Maria has been controlling the Russo family's shadow operations since Elias died."
I looked between the two women—the old matriarch and the young widow—realizing with terrifying clarity that I had never been the mastermind of this war. I had merely been the commander on the battlefield, executing moves designed by women who had mastered survival in a world built by violent men.
"What happens now?" I asked, withdrawing my hand from my coat, empty. "You took the money. You dismantled Arthur. You have what you wanted."
"Now, we face the real problem," Maria said, tapping the black flash drive on the table. "Arthur’s death wasn't natural, Daniel. He was poisoned inside ADX Florence by a nerve agent smuggled in through a legal courier."
My eyes narrowed. "Who poisoned him?"
"The Syndicate in Milan," Teresa replied grimly. "When Arthur fell, a vacuum opened in the European narcotics corridor. They know Gabriel Moretti is still alive, and they know you hold the biometric master codes to the Moretti family's international clearing accounts."

Maria plugged the flash drive into my laptop sitting on the side desk. A secure digital network map appeared on the screen, showing three red blips moving rapidly toward North America.
"They aren't coming for Arthur's ghost, Daniel," Maria said, looking at me with dead seriousness. "They’re coming to wipe out the Moretti bloodline once and for all—and they have an army landing at JFK International Airport tonight."
