Chapter 7 - The Reception Showdown

Z
The Grand Ballroom at the Oceanfront Country Club was bathed in warm golden light, decorated with thousands of white orchids, crystal chandeliers, and ice sculptures. A twelve-piece live band played smooth jazz in the background as waiters in black vests glided through the crowd carrying trays of vintage champagne and caviar canapés.
To any outside observer, it looked like a fairytale reception. But beneath the surface, the event was a ticking time bomb.
In the private VIP lounge overlooking the main ballroom, my father Arthur and my brother Brandon had cornered Nathaniel near the grand piano. I stood a few feet away, sipping a glass of Dom Pérignon, watching the trap spring itself.
"Nathaniel, please," Arthur pleaded, dropping all pretense of dignity, his voice desperate and low so nearby guests wouldn't overhear. "We can work this out! If Ward Global executes the foreclosure on the family estate on Monday, my wife will be ruined! Our social standing... our lives will be completely destroyed!"
"Your social standing was built on a foundation of debt and cruel vanity, Arthur," Nathaniel said coldly, taking a slow sip of his drink. "You spent money you didn't have to keep up appearances, while treating the one honest person in your family like a servant."
"I am your father-in-law!" Arthur hissed, his eyes bulging. "You can't do this to your wife's family! What will people say when they find out Nathaniel Ward threw his wife's parents onto the street?!"
"They’ll say I have impeccable boundaries," Nathaniel replied without missing a beat.
Brandon stepped forward, his suit jacket unbuttoned, his face flushed from consuming three heavy whiskies in the span of an hour. "You think you’re invincible, don't you, Ward?!" Brandon growled, pointing a shaking finger at Nathaniel’s chest. "You came into our lives, manipulated Hannah, and bought up my company just to flex your money! You’re a monster!"
"Brandon, shut up!" Arthur warned, trying to pull his son back.
"No, Dad! I’m sick of this!" Brandon shouted, his voice suddenly cutting through the soft jazz music, causing several high-society couples nearby to turn around in shock. "He thinks he can buy us! He thinks he can come to my wedding and ruin everything!"
At that moment, my mother Eleanor rushed into the lounge, flanked by Aunt Carol and a horrified Danielle.
"What is going on here?!" Eleanor gasped, seeing Brandon shouting. "Brandon, calm down! People are looking!"
"Let them look!" Brandon yelled, completely losing his control. He turned his furious gaze on me. "This is what you wanted, isn't it, Hannah?! You brought your billionaire lapdog here to destroy my wedding day! You couldn't handle the fact that I was the successful one! You couldn't handle that Mom and Dad loved me more!"
The music near the lounge seemed to fade as dozens of guests gathered around the open archway, whispering and pulling out their phones.
I set my champagne glass down on the piano with a deliberate, soft thud. I stepped forward, passing Nathaniel, and stood directly in front of my brother.
"Loved you more?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm, carrying effortlessly across the crowd. "They didn't love you, Brandon. They spoiled you because you were an extension of their vanity. They enabled your lies, covered up your thefts, and bought you a life you never earned. And in return, you became a weak, arrogant man who can't even stand on his own two feet without his parents paying for the floor."
"How dare you!" Eleanor shrieked, stepping between us, her face contorted in narcissistic rage. "You ungrateful little bitch! We gave you a roof over your head! We raised you! And you repay us by trying to starve your own brother?!"
"You didn't raise me, Eleanor," I said, looking my mother straight in the eyes, calling her by her first name for the very first time in my life. "You tolerated me. You shredded my clothes yesterday because you couldn't stand the thought of me walking into this room looking better than your chosen family. You tried to humiliate me one last time before Brandon’s big day. But look at you now."
I gestured around the room at the hundreds of wealthy, influential guests watching Eleanor with utter disgust and pity.
"You built your whole life around appearances," I whispered, just loud enough for the front row of onlookers to hear. "And now, everyone knows exactly what you are."
Eleanor looked around the room, finally registering the dozens of recording smartphone screens, the horrified stares of her country-club peers, and the total destruction of her prized reputation. She opened her mouth to scream, but no words came out. Her knees buckled slightly, and Arthur had to grab her arm to keep her from collapsing onto the parquet floor.
"Security," Nathaniel called out calmly.
Two massive, suited security officers who had been discreetly standing near the lounge entrance stepped forward immediately.
"Please escort Mr. Brandon Vane and his mother out of the venue," Nathaniel instructed smoothly. "They are causing a disturbance at my private event."
May you like
"Your event?!" Brandon spat, glaring at Nathaniel. "This is MY wedding reception!"
"Not anymore," Nathaniel replied, pulling a folded legal document from his breast pocket and placing it into Arthur’s hands. "I purchased the catering and venue contract from the country club two hours ago. This is now a private dinner hosted by Ward Global Capital. And you are trespassing."
