Chapter 15 - The Price of Retribution

The rain began to fall over Manhattan late that afternoon, slicking the glass windows of the federal courthouse with dark streaks of water.
In the private conference room adjacent to the clerk’s office, two federal agents dressed in dark suits stood by the door. On the table sat formal arrest warrants issued by the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.
Arthur sat in a chair, his face buried in his hands, weeping silently. Eleanor was kneeling beside him, her manicured nails digging into his shoulders, her voice a shrill, incoherent whisper of panicked excuses.
"It was Brandon!" Eleanor whimpered, looking up at the federal agents with wide, frantic eyes. "Arthur didn't know anything about the offshore accounts! Brandon set those up! Arthur is an old man, he has heart problems! You can't take him!"
"Mrs. Vane," the lead agent said firmly, pulling out a set of steel handcuffs. "Arthur Vane’s signature appears on twelve falsified tax documents over a six-year period. Both your husband and your son are being taken into custody for federal conspiracy, wire fraud, and tax evasion."
Brandon sat in the corner of the room, staring blankly at the floor, completely catatonic. The arrogant, boastful brother who had spent his life mocking my failures, who had raised a glass to humiliate me at his rehearsal dinner, was gone. In his place was a broken, terrified young man realizing he was about to spend the next decade of his life in a federal penitentiary.
I stood near the door, holding Nathaniel’s hand.
I looked at my family—at the wreckage of their lives, brought about not by my revenge, but by their own insatiable greed and refusal to ever accept responsibility for their actions. They had tried to destroy me at every turn: cutting up my clothes, framing me for theft, humiliating me publicly, and finally waging legal warfare against my husband.
And now, the final bill had come due.
Eleanor suddenly looked up, her eyes locking onto me. She scrambled up from her knees, rushing toward me, but the second federal agent instantly stepped in front of her, blocking her path.
"Hannah!" Eleanor screamed, tears streaking her ruined makeup, her voice echoing off the concrete walls. "Hannah, speak to him! Tell your husband to drop the federal charges! You can stop this! You're his wife! He’ll listen to you!"
I looked at my mother. I didn't feel anger. I didn't feel triumph. I felt only a vast, hollow emptiness.
"I didn't file these charges, Eleanor," I said quietly, my voice calm and completely detached. "The United States government filed them. You and Arthur chose to sign those papers six years ago. You chose to frame me. You chose to team up with Julian Croft. Every single step that brought you into this room was a choice you made willingly."
"We are your parents!" she shrieked, struggling against the agent's firm grip. "How can you stand there and watch your father be put in handcuffs?! Where is your heart?!"
"My heart broke in that guest room six months ago, Eleanor," I replied, looking her dead in the eye. "When you shredded my clothes and laughed with Carol while I stood there holding the ruined fabric. You threw away your daughter a long time ago. You just didn't realize until today that you threw away your only lifeline."
The lead agent clicked the steel handcuffs around Arthur’s wrists, pulling the old man slowly out of his chair. Brandon was escorted out second, his head bowed, his hands bound behind his back, staring at the floor as he passed me without uttering a single word.
Eleanor collapsed onto the floor, clutching her face, her hysterical sobs filling the sterile room as her husband and son were led away down the long, gray hallway.
Nathaniel wrapped his arm gently around my waist, pulling me close against his side. "Are you okay, darling?" he asked softly, searching my eyes for any sign of regret or sorrow.

I turned my back on the room, taking a deep, clean breath of the air.
"I’m more than okay, Nate," I murmured, resting my head against his shoulder as we walked toward the private elevator. "For the first time in my entire life... I’m completely free."
