Chapter 9 - The Raid on Blackwood Ridge

The trial concluded with a sweeping conviction on all counts. Linda Varner was sentenced to consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole in a maximum-security federal penitentiary. Evan Varner was sentenced to thirty years for his role, with partial leniency granted for his full confession and testimony against the higher-tier syndicate members.
p>However, one final threat remained.
The intelligence gathered from Linda’s primary server in Lake Placid revealed the location of the syndicate's master physical repository—a fortified mountain compound known as Blackwood Ridge, hidden deep in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia. The compound belonged to CEO Victor Blackwood, the defense contractor who had funded Linda’s escape attempt and orchestrated my father’s murder decades ago.
Blackwood was preparing to flee the country with a massive cache of classified defense schematics and stolen intelligence files.
At 0400 hours, I led a joint operation consisting of CID tactical units, FBI Hostage Rescue, and Army Special Forces. We arrived via two stealth Blackhawk helicopters, descending through the low-hanging mountain mist like shadows.
“Two minutes to drop!” the crew chief yelled over the deafening roar of the rotors.
I checked my weapon, tightened my tactical helmet, and gave the thumbs-up to Chief Investigator Reyes beside me. This wasn't just an administrative sweep anymore. This was the final tactical strike to eradicate the network that had plagued my family and my military for a generation.
The helicopters hovered over the compound’s central courtyard. Fast-ropes dropped, and our assault teams slid down with lethal precision, hitting the ground and securing outer cover before the compound’s automated defense alarms could sound.
“Go! Go! Go!” I commanded through the comms.
We breached the heavy reinforced front doors using explosive charges. BOOM! The doors blew inward, and smoke filled the grand entrance hall.
“U.S. Federal Agents! Hands in the air!” Reyes shouted as we flooded into the building.
Blackwood’s private security contractors attempted to establish a perimeter at the top of a grand marble staircase, opening fire with automatic weapons. Plaster exploded from the walls, and shattered glass rained down around us.
“Suppressing fire on the balcony!” I yelled, leaning out from behind a heavy stone pillar and double-tapping two armed guards advancing down the hallway.
Special Forces operators moved up the flanks, throwing flashbang grenades over the balcony railing. BANG! BANG! Blinding light and concussive sound disoriented the defenders. Within ninety seconds, the guard detail was disarmed, flex-cuffed, and secured on the floor.
I sprinted down the upper hallway toward the primary administrative wing, flanked by Reyes and two operators. We kicked open the double doors of the master office.
Inside, Victor Blackwood stood behind a massive mahogany desk, frantically feeding paper files into an industrial shredder while a computer terminal on his desk showed a progress bar deleting encrypted drive partitions.
“Step away from the terminal! Hands where I can see them!” I commanded, pointing my rifle directly at his chest.
Blackwood froze. He was a man in his late sixties, impeccably dressed in a bespoke suit, but his eyes were filled with frantic, cornered fury.
“Colonel Ellison,” Blackwood spat out, slowly raising his hands. “You should have stayed out of this. You’re just a pawn in a game far larger than you understand.”
“Your game is over, Blackwood,” I said, stepping forward and using a secure override drive provided by our cyber team to freeze the computer shredding process. “The servers are secured. The transport plane you ordered was impounded an hour ago in Washington.”
Blackwood’s shoulders dropped as the reality sank in. He looked at me, then at my rank insignia, then at the unwavering strength in my eyes.
“Your father was a stubborn fool,” Blackwood snarled softly. “He refused to see how the world really works.”
“My father died an honorable man,” I replied, my voice steady as stone. “And his daughter just ended your empire.”
Reyes stepped forward and slammed Blackwood down onto his desk, pulling his arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the mountain sunrise. As the light broke over the ridge, illuminating the mist-covered valleys, I felt an extraordinary weight lift from my shoulders.
The ghost of the past was finally laid to rest.
