Chapter 7 - Assets under Siege

The failed airport escape opened the floodgates. With Linda back in high-security federal custody under twenty-four-hour isolation and video surveillance, her powerful co-conspirators began turning on each other to save their own skins.

Over the next two weeks, federal agencies—including the FBI, IRS Criminal Investigation, and Department of Defense Inspector General—launched coordinated raids across six states. The evidence retrieved from the Lake Placid vault provided the keys to unlock a complex web of money laundering operations that spanned nearly three decades.

I sat in the command center at Fort Meade, watching a wall of monitors displaying real-time updates from federal strike teams. Beside me was Sarah Noland and Chief Investigator Amanda Reyes.

“We just seized twelve commercial properties in Miami and three luxury yachts in the Bahamas registered to Linda’s shell corporations,” Reyes reported, tapping her screen. “Total liquid assets frozen so far: ninety-four million dollars.”

“What about the survivor benefits stolen from military families?” I asked, focusing on the human cost of her crimes.

“We’ve identified over three hundred families affected by her fraudulent claims,” Sarah answered, her voice filled with quiet determination. “The Department of Veterans Affairs has established a special task force to restore every single dollar stolen from pensions, with interest, fully backed by the seized assets.”

A soft knock came at the command center door. General Halvorsen stepped into the room, holding an official, gold-embossed folder.

The room went silent as everyone stood to attention.

“As you were,” Halvorsen said, waving his hand. He walked straight over to me, looking at me with profound respect. “Colonel Ellison, I just returned from a briefing at the Pentagon with the Secretary of the Army.”

I stood straight. “Sir?”

Halvorsen opened the folder. “The Secretary has reviewed the findings of the special investigation into your family’s history, as well as your exemplary leadership during this crisis. In light of your extraordinary service, your tactical decisive action under fire, and your unyielding commitment to justice and military integrity, the Army is officially clearing your father’s record.”

He handed me a document bearing the official seal of the Department of Defense.

“Captain Thomas Ellison is hereby posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his bravery in uncovering systemic corruption, and promoted to the rank of Major,” Halvorsen read aloud. “His family will receive full military honors and restitution.”

I held the document in my hands. Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes, but I kept my posture rigid. For twenty-five years, my father’s legacy had been smeared by a lie, buried under forged accident reports. Today, his honor was restored.

“Thank you, General,” I said, my voice thick with emotion.

“That’s not all, Mara,” Halvorsen continued, a warm smile gracing his hardened face. “The President has signed an executive order approving your immediate reassignment and elevation to Commander of the 73rd Military Intelligence Brigade, effective immediately. You will lead the task force responsible for purging all remaining corrupt elements from our administrative systems.”

I looked around the room—at Sarah, who was beaming with pride; at Reyes, who gave me a sharp salute; and at the digital map showing the dismantling of Linda’s empire.

They had tried to humiliate me. They had shaved my head to break my spirit and paint me as broken. But instead of hiding in shame, I had turned my wounds into armor.

“I accept the command, General,” I said clearly. “We have a lot of work to do.”
