Chapter 6 - The Web of Deceit

The forensic audit of Vanguard Horizon was supposed to be a straightforward extraction of Dominic’s personal fraud. However, as Edward’s team dug deeper into the encrypted servers Chloe had tried to smuggle out, they uncovered a dark, complex web of corporate espionage that reached far beyond a simple cheating husband.
Vivienne sat in Edward’s private office at Sterling Capital, staring at a wall-sized digital display of financial transactions.
“This isn't just Dominic,” Edward said, his face grim as he pointed to a series of offshore transfers. “Dominic was a puppet, Viv. He didn't have the financial intelligence to set up these multi-tiered shell companies. Someone else was guiding him. Someone who wanted to use Vanguard as a trojan horse to infiltrate Sterling Capital’s primary logistics networks.”
Vivienne’s eyes narrowed. “Who?”
Edward pressed a button, and a new corporate logo appeared on the screen: Blackwood Holdings.
“The Blackwood family,” Vivienne breathed.
“Exactly,” Edward said. “Our oldest, most aggressive competitors in the infrastructure sector. For decades, the Blackwoods have tried to break our monopoly on the Eastern seaboard’s commercial transport hubs. They couldn't beat us fairly, so they played dirty. They found Dominic—a highly ambitious, highly insecure executive who felt overshadowed by his wife's simple lifestyle—and they gave him a playbook.”
He pulled up a series of encrypted emails between Dominic and a user named "Erebus"—which the forensic team had traced back to Arthur Blackwood, the youngest son of the Blackwood empire.
Email Fragment: Dec 14, 2025
From: Erebus (Arthur Blackwood)
To: D. Vance
Message: The Sterling Capital logistics contract is the key. Once Vanguard secures the primary bid, we will begin the asset transfer. Your wife's credentials will be used to authorize the final routing protocols. She won't know a thing. Once it is done, you will have your payout, your divorce, and your new life with Thorne's daughter. We will handle the rest.
Vivienne felt a chill run down her spine. Dominic hadn't just cheated on her; he had actively conspired with her family's mortal enemies to use her own identity to steal from her brothers. He was willing to let her take the fall for a multi-billion-dollar corporate theft that would have ruined the Sterling name forever.
“If they had succeeded,” Vivienne said, her voice shaking with a mix of horror and rage, “Sterling Capital would have been implicated in a federal conspiracy to route illegal cargo through our ports. Arthur’s senate career would have been destroyed. Victor would have faced prison time.”
“Yes,” Edward said, his jaw tight. “And you would have been the one holding the smoking gun, since your forged signature was on all the final authorization documents. Dominic was going to frame you for the entire conspiracy, divorce you, and flee the country with Madeline and the Blackwoods' payout.”
Vivienne stood up, her hands clenching into fists. The sheer scale of the betrayal was breathtaking. She had loved this man. She had given him a daughter. She had spent seven years protecting his pride, only for him to plot the complete and utter destruction of her and her entire family.
“Where is Dominic’s criminal trial being held?” Vivienne asked, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper.
“The Southern District of New York,” Edward replied. “But with this new evidence of corporate espionage and national security implications regarding the port access, the federal prosecutors are upgrading the charges to treasonous conspiracy and grand larceny. He’s looking at life in a maximum-security facility.”
“No,” Vivienne said. “Life is too easy. I want him to watch everything he ever wanted turn to ash first. And I want the Blackwoods brought down with him.”
A Strategic AllianceLater that afternoon, Vivienne met with Julian Mercer at a quiet, private dining club in Manhattan. She had shared the preliminary findings of the Blackwood connection with him, knowing that Mercer Global held a significant short position on Blackwood Holdings’ stock.
Julian listened intently, his expression growing darker with every detail.
“This is monstrous, Vivienne,” Julian said, his hand resting briefly over hers on the table in a gesture of support. “To think that Dominic was willing to sacrifice you and Sophia for a payout from the Blackwoods... it’s sick.”
“I want to crush them, Julian,” Vivienne said openly. “Not just Dominic. The Blackwood family. They believed they could use my family’s love for me as a weakness. I want to show them that it is their greatest mistake.”
Julian nodded slowly, his eyes shining with a calculating brilliance. “We can do it. The Blackwoods are currently highly leveraged on a major port development project in New Jersey. If Sterling Capital and Mercer Global launch a joint, hostile takeover of their primary logistics provider, we can cut off their supply lines. Within forty-eight hours, they will default on their loans. Their stock will plummet, and we can buy them out for pennies on the dollar.”
“And Arthur Blackwood?” Vivienne asked.
“My contacts at the Department of Justice will make sure those encrypted emails are delivered directly to the Attorney General’s desk,” Julian promised. “By tomorrow morning, Arthur Blackwood will be sitting in a cell right next to Dominic.”
Vivienne looked at Julian, feeling a deep, quiet gratitude. For years, she had believed that the corporate world was devoid of honor, that everyone was a shark looking for blood. But Julian was different. He was strong, brilliant, and yet he possessed a deep sense of integrity and loyalty that Dominic had never even begun to comprehend.

“Thank you, Julian,” she said softly.
“You don't need to thank me, Vivienne,” Julian said, his eyes locking onto hers with a warmth that made her heart flutter for the first time in years. “I protect the people I care about. And I care about you.”
