Chapter 5 - The Sister's Vengeance

Z

The rain was falling in torrential sheets by the time I stormed out of the skyscraper and stepped onto the crowded Manhattan sidewalk. Cameras flashed instantly, blinding me in the overcast gray light.

"Claire! Over here!"

"Claire, is it true your sister claims you framed her and Ethan?"

"Did you orchestrate the corporate raid to take full control of the Morgan empire?"

A wall of reporters pressed against the police barricades outside the building entrance. In the middle of the media frenzy stood Madison, draped in an expensive ivory trench coat, holding an umbrella held by a slick young defense attorney. Tears were streaming down her face—masterfully applied, perfectly dramatic, designed for maximum television impact.

"My sister was consumed by jealousy!" Madison wept into a cluster of news microphones, her voice amplified across the street. "When she found out my husband... I mean, Ethan... and I were working on a private business venture, she used her position to alter the books! She set up fake accounts, framed us for embezzlement, and had us arrested in front of our own parents! She destroyed our family because her marriage was failing!"

I stopped dead in my tracks, my blood running cold.

She was spinning the story. In the court of public opinion, facts didn't matter—narratives did. By framing herself as the victim of a ruthless, bitter older sister who controlled the corporate machinery, Madison was laying the groundwork to invalidate the evidence I had turned over to the federal prosecutors.

I turned away from the press line, pulled my collar up against the wind, and ducked into the back of my waiting car.

"Where to, Ms. Morgan?" my driver asked nervously.

"The Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn," I ordered, my voice trembling with suppressed fury. "I need to see Ethan."

Thirty minutes later, I was sitting in a windowless, concrete visitor room deep inside the federal detention facility. The air smelled of industrial floor cleaner and stale sweat.

The heavy steel door buzzed open, and Ethan was led into the room by a corrections officer. He was wearing an orange jumpsuit, his hands shackled to a waist chain. His hair was messy, and dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes, but the cold arrogance in his posture hadn't disappeared.

He sat down across the stainless-steel table from me, the heavy chains rattling against the metal.

"Have you come to gloat, Claire?" Ethan asked, a bitter smile touching his lips. "Or did you come to see what three million dollars in legal fees looks like?"

"Madison is outside telling the press I framed both of you," I said coldly. "And Marcus Thorne just seized control of Morgan Events Group using the 2018 conversion clause you uncovered for him."

Ethan’s smile widened slightly. "I know. I spoke to Marcus's associate an hour before my arraignment."

I leaned across the table. "He threw you to the wolves, Ethan! You served yourself up on a silver platter to a corporate predator who doesn't give a damn about you! You're sitting in a federal prison cell facing ten years for wire fraud, while Thorne takes everything we built!"

Ethan leaned in close, his eyes burning with a desperate, manic intensity. "You still don't get it, do you, Claire? Thorne didn't betray me. We had a deal. I gave him the 2018 documents, and in exchange, he guaranteed my bail and agreed to fund my defense through his offshore legal network. But you... you destroyed that when you went to the IRS!"

"You betrayed me first!" I shouted, slamming my hand onto the stainless-steel table. The guard in the corner shifted his stance, his hand resting near his holster, but I didn't care. "Twelve years, Ethan! I trusted you with my life! I trusted you with my family! And you were sleeping with my sister in parking garages and stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars to build a life with her behind my back!"

Ethan’s face twisted into an ugly, cruel scowl. "Twelve years of playing second fiddle to your precious grandmother’s company! Twelve years of watching you care more about event schedules, client contracts, and table settings than you ever cared about me! You didn't want a husband, Claire. You wanted an executive assistant you could sleep with!"

The words cut deep, striking a nerve I had tried desperately to numb over the last forty-eight hours. Was I distant? Had I prioritized the company over our marriage? Perhaps. But nothing—nothing—justified the level of calculated cruelty he and Madison had inflicted upon me.

"I loved you, Ethan," I whispered, my voice breaking for the briefest second before I forced my composure back into place. "And you repaid that love by trying to ruin me."

"Then let’s ruin each other," Ethan snarled, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "You think Thorne is your only problem? Check Madison’s personal laptop, Claire. The one she kept at your parents' lake house. She didn't just store receipt scans on there. She recorded every conversation your father had with Thorne back in 2018. She has audio files of Richard admitting he knew the seed money was tied to illegal offshore gambling syndicates in Macao."

My breath hitched in my throat. The room seemed to spin.

"Your precious father... your heroic, noble father," Ethan mocked, grinning through his teeth. "He didn't just take a bad loan, Claire. He laundered money for foreign cartels to keep Morgan Events Group alive. If those audio files hit the US Attorney's desk, your father won't just lose his house. He'll die in a federal penitentiary."

May you like

Ethan leaned back against his chair, the chains clanking softly.

"Madison has the laptop," Ethan said softly. "And she’s delivering it to Thorne at six o'clock tonight... unless you agree to drop the corporate charges, sign over your remaining shares, and walk away with nothing."
