Chapter 13 - The Patriarch's Return

The name Julian Vance echoed in the silent room like a thunderclap.
I looked at the old man, my mind racing through three decades of corporate family history. Ethan had mentioned a grandfather who lived in Geneva—a reclusive venture capitalist who had made a fortune in European shipping before retiring from public view twenty years ago. But nowhere in our official founding articles, our corporate registry, or my grandmother’s private journals was there any record of Julian Vance holding equity in Morgan Events Group.
"That's impossible," I said coldly, leaning forward against my desk. "My grandmother founded this company independently in 1995 using her inheritance. She owned one hundred percent of the original capital stock until the trust was created."
Julian smiled—a quiet, sad smile that bore a chilling resemblance to the charm Ethan had used to manipulate me for twelve years.
"Evelyn was a brilliant woman, Claire," Julian said, taking a seat in one of my leather guest chairs while his young female companion remained standing behind him. "She was visionary, elegant, and fiercely proud. But she was also broke in the autumn of 1994. Her family’s real estate holdings were heavily mortgaged, and the banks refused to grant her a commercial line of credit."
He motioned toward the young woman, who immediately opened her leather briefcase, pulled out a yellowed, faded parchment binder, and placed it gently on my desk.
"I provided the initial three million dollars in seed capital," Julian continued, tapping the binder with his index finger. "Not as a loan, but as an unregistered equity partnership. Evelyn and I executed a private Swiss syndicate covenant. Under its terms, my equity remained hidden to protect the company from the political scrutiny my European shipping firm was facing at the time."
I opened the yellowed binder. The parchment smelled of old ink and dry paper.
There, on page twelve, was my grandmother Evelyn’s distinct, elegant signature in dark blue ink—juxtaposed right beside the bold, sweeping signature of Julian Vance. Attached was a notarized bank transfer receipt from Bank Julius Bär in Zurich, dated October 14, 1994.
My stomach sank. "If this document is authentic... why did you wait thirty years to present it?"
"Because Evelyn and I had a gentleman's agreement," Julian explained softly, his eyes locking onto mine. "As long as the company remained in direct control of the bloodline, and as long as it maintained its prestige, I was content to let my capital sit in silence, collecting dividends routed through secondary offshore accounts. But over the last year... I have watched from Geneva as this family tore itself to pieces."
He leaned forward, his expression turning sharp and stern.
"My foolish grandson Ethan attempted to steal from you," Julian said, disgust lacing his voice. "Your bitter sister tried to blackmail your father. Your weak father laundered money for Asian syndicates. And Marcus Thorne tried to butcher the real estate portfolio for scrap."
"And I stopped all of them," I countered fiercely, rising from my chair. "I purged the corruption! I saved two hundred jobs! I secured a twenty-million-dollar recapitalization deal with the Sterling Foundation and rebuilt this company into a global powerhouse!"
"You turned our private family legacy into a public spectacle!" Julian roared, slamming his cane against the floor. The loud crack echoed off the glass walls. "You dragged the Vance name and the Morgan name through the mud of federal courtrooms! You put my grandson in a penitentiary!"
"Your grandson belonged in a penitentiary!" I yelled back, my voice shaking with righteous indignation. "He stole eighty-seven thousand dollars! He forged my signature! He slept with my sister!"
"Ethan was foolish, greedy, and poorly disciplined!" Julian snapped. "He should have been disciplined quietly inside the family! He should have been stripped of his title and sent overseas! Instead, you handed him over to the federal authorities like a common criminal to satisfy your own personal desire for revenge!"
Silence fell over the office, heavy and suffocating. Mark stepped forward from the corner, his hand resting near his belt, but I held up a hand to stop him.
I looked at the powerful patriarch sitting across from me. He didn't care about justice. He didn't care about ethics or corporate integrity. Like my father, like Ethan, like Marcus Thorne, Julian Vance belonged to an old world where powerful men swept crimes under rugs and sacrificed women to preserve their vanity.
"What do you want, Mr. Vance?" I asked, my voice dropping into a razor-thin whisper.
Julian adjusted his charcoal suit jacket, his fiery rage vanishing as quickly as it had appeared, replaced once again by the smooth, terrifying composure of a seasoned predator.
"The Swiss covenant contains an immediate buyback clause," Julian stated calmly. "In the event that the public reputation of the enterprise is compromised by criminal proceedings involving the executive officers, the silent partner holds the absolute right to exercise a forced buyout of all outstanding public and private shares at fifty percent of fair market value."
My heart stopped beating for a full second.
"You're trying to force a hostile squeeze-out," I breathed, realization washing over me like ice water. "That's why Ethan tried to delete those files... he wasn't just working for Thorne. He was trying to hide this Swiss covenant from me so you could strike when the company was vulnerable!"
"Ethan was trying to take the company for himself," Julian corrected disdainfully. "He failed because he was weak. I will not fail, Claire. My legal team filed the Swiss buyout petition in the High Court of Chancery two hours ago. As of this morning, all operational decisions, including your upcoming London expansion, are suspended pending judicial review."

He stood up, leaning on his silver-topped cane, and looked down at me with an expression of cold, absolute superiority.
"You have seven days to surrender the CEO position and execute the share transfer, Claire," Julian said softly. "Do it, and I will allow you to retire with twenty million dollars. Refuse... and I will use my international banking network to bankrupt Morgan Global Experiences before your thirty-sixth birthday."
