Chapter 7 - The Freezing Order

Z

At 8:30 AM the following morning, the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York was a hive of frantic activity. Rain continued to lash the stone steps outside, where a throng of financial journalists, local reporters, and camera crews had already gathered, tipped off by the sudden collapse of Vance Hospitality’s executive leadership.

Inside the courtroom of Judge Katherine Holbrook, the atmosphere was frigid.

Grant Vance sat at the defense table beside two high-priced white-collar criminal defense attorneys whom Eleanor had hired at a staggering emergency retainer. He wore a dark navy suit that looked rumpled, his hair hastily combed, his posture deflated. Eleanor sat behind him in the gallery, her face obscured by oversized dark sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat, attempting to maintain an aura of aristocratic disdain despite the presence of two federal marshals standing near the door.

Mara and I sat directly behind the Assistant United States Attorney, alongside the lead restructuring counsel for First National Bank.

Judge Holbrook adjusted her glasses, looking down from the bench with an expression of sharp, unyielding severity. She held a thick stack of documents—the encrypted files provided by Kyle, corroborated by Northstar’s forensic audit and First National’s credit records.

"We are here on the government’s emergency ex parte application for a nationwide asset freezing order and preliminary injunction under the Federal Debt Collection Procedures Act," Judge Holbrook began, her voice echoing through the wood-paneled room. "Mr. Vance, I have reviewed the filings submitted by the government and Northstar Capital. The evidence of systematic bank fraud, wire fraud, and intentional asset dissipation is overwhelming."

Grant’s lead attorney stood up immediately. "Your Honor, my client vehemently denies these sensationalized allegations. What we are witnessing is an aggressive civil dispute resulting from a broken personal engagement, weaponized by Northstar Capital to force an unconscionable corporate takeover. There is no risk of asset flight. Mr. Vance is a pillar of this community."

"Your 'pillar of the community' booked a one-way private charter flight to Zurich departing Teterboro Airport at eleven o'clock this morning," the Assistant U.S. Attorney interrupted calmly, holding up a certified flight manifest. "Furthermore, within forty-five minutes of Northstar’s default notice yesterday, Mr. Vance attempted to execute an electronic wire transfer of two point four million dollars from a secondary corporate account to an unlisted entity in the Cayman Islands."

Judge Holbrook’s gavel struck the sound block with a sharp, echoing crack that caused Grant to flinch violently.

"That is quite enough, counsel," Judge Holbrook stated coldly. "The court finds probable cause to believe that the defendants have engaged in a coordinated scheme to defraud institutional lenders and investors, and that there is an imminent risk of foreign asset concealment."

She signed the order before her with a heavy black pen.

"Effective immediately, all domestic and international financial accounts belonging to Grant Vance, Eleanor Vance, and their associated holding entities are frozen. The defendants are ordered to surrender their passports to the United States Marshals Service within two hours. Furthermore, a temporary restraining order is issued prohibiting any transfer, encumbrance, or alteration of Vance Hospitality’s real estate assets pending the appointment of a federal equity receiver."

Grant slumped forward, resting his forehead against the defense table. Eleanor let out an audible gasp, her hand flying to her throat as if struggling for air.

"Additionally," Judge Holbrook continued, looking down at Grant, "the court has received a separate sworn petition regarding witness intimidation and electronic harassment directed at Ms. Claire Morgan. A formal temporary order of protection is entered against Grant Vance. You are to have zero contact—direct, indirect, electronic, or through third parties—with Ms. Morgan. Any violation will result in immediate remand into federal custody without bail."

The judge struck her gavel once more. "Court is adjourned."

As the courtroom cleared, Grant’s attorneys huddled around him, their voices hushed and tense as they instructed him on the mechanics of surrendering his passport.

As I walked down the center aisle toward the exit, Eleanor rose from her seat, stepping into my path before a federal marshal stepped between us.

"You have destroyed my son’s life," Eleanor hissed, her voice shaking with venomous fury, her sunglasses failing to hide the manic desperation in her eyes. "You will never walk into a boardroom in this city without people knowing you ruined an American dynasty over your petty, fragile feelings."

I stopped and looked at her, my expression completely serene.

"Your dynasty was built on counterfeit numbers and stolen labor, Eleanor," I said, my voice calm and resonant enough for the reporters near the doorway to hear every word. "I didn't destroy your son. I simply forced him to look in the mirror. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a company to buy."
