Chapter 14 - The Bear Trap

The tarmac at Miami Executive Airport was scorching under the bright Florida sun. A sleek, twin-engine Gulfstream sat near the runway, its turbines whining as the flight crew prepared for departure.

A black sedan screeched to a halt beside the perimeter fence, followed seconds later by two unmarked federal SUVs with flashing blue lights.

Julian Torres, carrying a leather duffel bag, was halfway up the boarding stairs when four armed FBI agents spilled out of the SUVs, weapons drawn.

"FBI! Step down from the stairs and place your hands on your head!" an agent shouted through a megaphone.

Torres froze, his face draining of color as he looked from the agents to the black sedan. I stepped out of the backseat, wearing my dark sunglasses, flanked by Mara and the Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida.

Torres slowly walked down the stairs, his hands shaking as an agent forced him to his knees and clicked heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. Inside his duffel bag, federal officers recovered a secure laptop, fifty thousand dollars in cash, and an encrypted hard drive containing Northstar’s entire property management source code.

Two hours later, inside an interrogation room at the federal building in downtown Miami, Julian Torres broke completely under the weight of an impending twenty-year corporate espionage and computer fraud indictment.

"It was a man named Vance!" Torres sobbed, wiping his face with his sleeve. "He met me at a bar in South Beach two weeks ago! He gave me twenty-five thousand in cash and promised me two hundred thousand more once I landed in Nassau if I loaded the script onto the hotel server!"

"Did he give you a name?" Mara asked, leaning over the metal table.

"He called himself Sterling," Torres stammered. "He showed me bank transfers from a Swiss account to prove he had the money! He said Claire Morgan was going to be bankrupt by the end of the month anyway, so nobody would care about a glitch in Miami!"

Mara looked at me and nodded subtly. We had the smoking gun. Sterling Vance had personally orchestrated a physical, criminal attack on domestic infrastructure to manipulate asset valuations—a direct violation of federal racketeering laws.

"We can have the U.S. Attorney issue an arrest warrant for Sterling by tomorrow morning," Mara whispered as we walked out of the interrogation room.

"No," I replied, stopping in the quiet corridor. "An arrest warrant will lead to months of international extradition battles in Switzerland. Sterling will hide behind foreign bank secrecy laws and fight us from his chalet in St. Moritz. I want to destroy him completely, Mara. I want to take his entire fund."

"How?" Mara asked, her brow furrowing.

"Sterling thinks he’s playing a game of intimidation," I said, my mind spinning out the architecture of a massive financial counter-offensive. "He’s shorting Northstar’s public debt notes on the European shadow markets while using Sovereign Crest’s leverage to build a hostile position in our primary credit syndicate. He wants to force a short squeeze that will drain our liquidity."

"What are you thinking, Claire?"

"I’m thinking we set a bear trap," I said, a cold, predatory light filling my eyes. "David Chen tracked Sterling’s offshore leverage. Sovereign Crest has overexposed itself to execute this raid. They have borrowed three hundred million dollars in short-term credit from European investment banks, backed by their holdings in foreign real estate, to finance this attack on Northstar."

"If we artificially inflate the perceived vulnerability of Northstar," Mara realized, her eyes widening as she caught my vision, "Sterling will double down on his short positions..."

"Precisely," I continued. "We let the press think the Miami sabotage severely damaged our financial standing. We leak a false internal memo suggesting that Northstar is struggling to meet its quarterly debt service. Sterling will smell blood in the water. He will deploy the rest of Sovereign Crest’s liquidity to execute a massive, final short assault to crush us."

"And while he’s fully exposed?" Mara asked, a breathless smile forming on her lips.

"While he’s fully exposed," I said, "we use our undisclosed cash reserves from the Morgan Sentinel sale to quietly buy up all of Sovereign Crest’s underlying debt notes across Europe through a Swiss proxy fund. When he expects us to default, we step in as his primary lender and call his loans due immediately."

Mara let out a low, admiring breath. "You’re going to execute a reverse hostile takeover of a forty-billion-dollar private equity firm."

"Sterling wanted to teach me a lesson about family legacies," I said, walking toward the exit doors. "I’m going to teach him a lesson about capitalism."
