Chapter 7 - Hostile Takeover Attempt

Henrik Von Blackwood let out a soft, dry laugh that rattled through the empty warehouse like dead leaves scraping across concrete. He gestured casually with his hand, and one of the armed mercenaries stepped forward, ripping the duct tape off Daniel’s bloody mouth.
"Mom! Mom, run!" Daniel shrieked instantly, his voice cracking with sheer desperation. Tears mixed with blood poured down his bruised cheeks. "They're gonna kill us both! They don't care about the ledger! They just want to erase everything! Mom, I'm sorry! I was so wrong about everything! Please, forgive me!"
I looked at my son. For the first time in ten years, I saw no smugness in his face, no greedy calculation, no arrogance. I saw only the terrified child who used to run to my bed during thunderstorms.
"Quiet, Daniel," I said gently, my tone remarkably calm. "Let the adults finish their business."
Henrik raised an eyebrow, amused by my composure. "Fascinating. Most mothers would be weeping at my feet, begging for mercy. But you stand there conducting yourself like a board chairman overseeing an annual audit."
"That is because I am an auditor, Henrik," I replied, taking a small step forward. "And your organization has been running a deficit for thirty years."
Henrik’s smile faded, his cold eyes narrowing slightly. "You think you hold power because your late husband left you a private ledger? That ledger is fifty pages of dusty history. In five minutes, my technical team in Zurich will finalize the manual override of Solaria Bank’s central servers. Once we purge Victor Vance's master keys from the architecture, your little book becomes completely worthless."
"You really believe Curtis Hale and Julian Ross were your only weak points?" I asked, a slight, knowing smile touching my lips. "You built an empire on blackmail, land theft, and vulnerable family members. But you made one fundamental error when you targeted Vance Fiduciary."
"And what error was that?" Henrik asked coldly, sliding his hand toward his coat pocket.
"You assumed that money is the ultimate leverage," I answered.
I raised my silver cane slightly, pointing the tip directly at his chest.
"Money is merely numerical data, Henrik. It moves where it is instructed to go. Twenty minutes ago, before I stepped out of my vehicle, my Chief Operating Officer executed a global automated wire sweep across all seventy-two shell accounts associated with Blackwood Holdings."
Henrik froze. "What?"
"Victor Vance didn't just leave me a physical ledger," I continued, my voice growing colder and sharper with every word. "He left me the original source code for Solaria Bank's clearance protocols. When Julian Ross used my son to initiate those stolen transfers, he activated an automated forensic tracking virus I embedded into the system twelve years ago."
Henrik pulled a encrypted satellite phone from his coat pocket. His fingers flew across the screen as he dialed his technical team in Switzerland. He pressed the phone to his ear.
"Status!" Henrik barked into the phone.
A panicked voice screamed through the receiver so loudly that even I could hear it from twenty feet away.
"Sir! Everything is gone! The accounts are emptying! Millions of dollars are being rerouted to federal escrow accounts in New York, London, and Tokyo! Our system doors are locked! We are completely shut out!"
Henrik’s face went dead white. The sophisticated, untouchable aristocrat vanished in an instant, replaced by a man who realized his entire world was crumbling around his ears.
He dropped the phone. It shattered against the hard concrete floor.
"You..." Henrik hissed, his jaw clenching tightly as his knuckles turned white around his silver cane. "You ruined us..."
"No, Henrik," I said softly, taking another step forward. "You ruined yourself when you mistook an old woman's quiet life for weakness."
"Kill her," Henrik commanded coldly, stepping back toward Daniel. "Kill them both! Burn this place to the ground!"
The three mercenaries raised their assault rifles, aiming directly at my chest.
Daniel screamed in terror, closing his eyes tightly.
Before the lead shooter could pull his trigger, the glass skylights overhead exploded in a rain of razor-sharp shards.
Heavy flashbang grenades crashed onto the concrete floor, detonating with deafening booms and blinding white flashes of light. The mercenaries screamed, dropping their weapons as they clutched their blinded eyes and bleeding ears.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! ON THE GROUND NOW!"
Tactical officers in full black body armor swung down from the steel rafters on heavy ropes, weapons drawn, while the rusted metal doors of the warehouse were smashed open by an armored police vehicle.
Marcus Sterling stepped through the dust and smoke, flanked by a squad of armed FBI agents led by Special Agent Miller.
"Secure the perimeter!" Agent Miller shouted, pointing her sidearm directly at Henrik Von Blackwood. "Henrik Von Blackwood, keep your hands where I can see them! You are under arrest!"
Henrik looked around in complete shock as his men were tackled to the floor and handcuffed within seconds. He slowly raised his hands into the air, his silver cane dropping to the concrete with a loud metallic clatter.
I walked past the struggling mercenaries, stepping directly up to Henrik.

I looked down at his dropped cane, then looked up into his defeated eyes.
"The audit is complete, Baron," I said softly. "You owe the state everything."
