Chapter 14 - The Monaco Ambush

The Mediterranean sun sparkled brilliantly over the mega-yachts moored at Port Hercule in Monte Carlo. The air smelled of salt water, expensive perfume, and jet fuel.

At seventy-one, wearing an elegant white silk blazer, dark sunglasses, and carrying my silver-headed cane, I walked along the private VIP pier flanked by Marcus Sterling.

Moored at the end of the private dock was the Gilded Empress—a two-hundred-foot luxury superyacht worth seventy million dollars, flying the flag of a small island nation that granted diplomatic immunity to its registered owners. It belonged to Baroness Elizabeth Von Blackwood.

Four heavily armed private security guards in dark suits stood guard at the boarding ramp, their eyes scanning the marina continuously.

"Elizabeth’s security team is elite French foreign legion mercenaries," Marcus whispered as we approached. "They have orders to shoot anyone who steps onto the gangway without a private clearance code."

"They won't shoot me, Marcus," I replied calmly, continuing my steady pace. "Elizabeth is an arrogant woman. She wants to see me break."

As we reached the gangway, the lead guard stepped forward, placing his hand on his holstered sidearm. "Stop. Private vessel. Step back."

"Tell Baroness Von Blackwood that Eleanor Vance is here to deliver her husband’s final medical accounting," I spoke clearly in French.

The guard hesitated, adjusting his earpiece as he received a radio communication from the upper deck. After a brief pause, he unhooked the velvet rope and stepped aside.

"Only Mrs. Vance," the guard stated sternly. "The man stays on the pier."

"Eleanor, no," Marcus warned, reaching for my arm. "It’s a trap."

"Stay here, Marcus," I said gently, looking back at him. "Keep the signal live."

I stepped onto the polished teak deck of the Gilded Empress, my cane making a light, rhythmic tapping sound against the wood. Two guards escorted me up the grand spiral staircase to the top deck sun lounge.

Sitting on a white leather sofa under a canvas canopy, sipping iced champagne, was Elizabeth Von Blackwood. She looked stunning, wearing a dark emerald dress and diamond sunglasses, completely unbothered by our presence.

"Eleanor," Elizabeth drawled smoothly, lowering her sunglasses to reveal her piercing green eyes. "I must admit, I am impressed. Most widows would be weeping in a therapist's office after learning their husband was murdered. You flew straight to the French Riviera."

"I don't waste time weeping, Elizabeth," I said, walking toward her and taking a seat in an armchair opposite her sofa, resting my hands on my cane. "I come to collect outstanding debts."

Elizabeth chuckled softly, leaning back against her plush cushions. "You are in international waters onboard a vessel holding full diplomatic immunity, Eleanor. The French police cannot step foot on this boat. Interpol cannot touch me. And your little forensic auditing tricks mean nothing here."

"You built your entire life around the illusion of immunity, Elizabeth," I replied softly. "Your brother Henrik thought he was immune because he had corrupt lawyers. Julian Ross thought he was immune because he had money. Vanessa thought she was immune because she was family. Where are they now?"

Elizabeth’s eyes narrowed slightly, her calm demeanor faltering for a fraction of a second. "They were careless. I am not."

"You were extremely careless, Elizabeth," I corrected her, leaning forward slightly. "You paid Vanessa four hundred thousand dollars through Greenwich Advisory in the Bahamas to poison Robert. You thought using an offshore shell company protected you."

"Good luck proving that in a court of law," Elizabeth sneered. "Greenwich Advisory is registered under bearer shares. My name appears nowhere on the corporate charter."

"Your name doesn't need to appear on the charter, Elizabeth," I said with a faint smile.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small, sleek digital recorder, setting it gently on the glass table between us.

"Five minutes ago," I explained, "while I was walking down the gangway, Marcus Sterling executed a real-time seizure of the maritime satellite uplink operating on this vessel."

Elizabeth froze. "What?"

"This superyacht is registered under a maritime lease agreement funded directly by Greenwich Advisory," I continued, my voice steady and cold as steel. "Under Maritime Safety Protocols, when a vessel's communications array is compromised by suspicious cyber activity, the host port authority—in this case, the Prince's Government of Monaco—is legally required to impound the vessel for safety inspections."

Right on cue, two heavy Monégasque harbor police patrol boats rounded the breakwater, their red and blue lights flashing as they pulled up alongside the Gilded Empress. Powerful searchlights swept across the top deck, illuminating Elizabeth in blinding white light.

A loudspeaker boomed across the water in French:

"ATTENTION GILDED EMPRESS! THIS VESSEL IS UNDER IMMEDIATE MARITIME SEIZURE BY ORDER OF THE MONACO MARITIME POLICE! LOWER YOUR GANGWAY AND PREPARE TO BE BOARDED!"

Elizabeth leaped to her feet, her champagne glass crashing against the teak deck, her face flushed red with pure panic. "This is impossible! I have diplomatic immunity!"

"Diplomatic immunity protects diplomats, Elizabeth," I said, standing up slowly and buttoning my white blazer. "It does not protect a vessel whose registration fees were paid using funds linked to international murder-for-hire schemes."

Two French maritime police officers burst onto the top deck, weapons drawn, flanked by Special Agent Miller from the FBI.

"Baroness Elizabeth Von Blackwood!" Agent Miller announced, stepping forward with handcuffs. "You are under arrest for the international conspiracy to commit the murder of Robert Vance, wire fraud, and racketeering!"

Elizabeth backed away toward the railing, her green eyes filled with wild terror as the police officers grabbed her arms and snapped the cold steel handcuffs around her wrists.

She looked at me, her voice screaming in rage as she was dragged away: "You cursed old woman! You destroyed my family!"

I stood at the railing of the yacht, watching the blue Mediterranean waves lap against the hull as the morning sun warmed my face.

I reached into my pocket, pulled out a small silver pocket watch that had belonged to Robert, and opened the clasp. Inside was a small black-and-white photograph of Robert smiling at me on our wedding day forty-five years ago.

"The debt is settled, my love," I whispered softly into the gentle sea breeze.
