Chapter 138: The Final Settlement of the Soil

In late 2095, the city of Richmond completed the construction of the Anna Davis Civic Commons—the massive, public green space that had replaced the last physical lot owned by the old Davis Construction company.

As part of the final site inspection, the city engineers found a small, iron security box buried deep beneath the concrete foundations of the old warehouse office. It was delivered directly to Claire at the Virginia estate.

Inside the box were no hidden ledgers or corporate funds. There was a single, silver mason’s trowel engraved with the date: May 12, 1972—the day Robert Davis laid the first brick of his company warehouse.

Claire didn't put it in a display case. She took the silver trowel, drove out to the public cemetery outside Richmond, and walked down the gravel path to the quiet plot where the family lay. She sat on the stone bench between the graves of my mother, Claire, and my daughter, Anna. A few yards away sat Sabrina's modest headstone, now completely covered in green moss.

She used the trowel to dig a small, deep hole in the damp earth directly between the graves of the protectors, dropped the silver tool into the dark soil, and covered it over, packing the dirt down firmly with her boot.

"It’s completely finished, Robert," Claire whispered to the quiet grass. "The warehouse is a park, the assets are a trust, and the name you thought you owned has been entirely reclaimed by the daughter you tried to step on. The soil is clean now. Sleep well.
