Chapter 5 - The Gravity of Choice

The silence in the hospital corridor was deafening. The distant, rhythmic sound of medical equipment seemed to fade into the background, leaving only the sound of my own erratic breathing.

I'm going to adopt him.

The words echoed in my mind, each repetition heavier than the last. I looked at Cole, searching his face for any sign that he was exaggerating, that this was just an emotional reaction to a dying woman's plight. But there was no hesitation in his eyes. There was only a terrifying, absolute certainty.

"You're going to adopt him?" I repeated, my voice dropping to a whisper that felt frail and weak against the cold hospital walls. "Cole... we have been married for one year. We haven't even talked about having our own children yet. And you've already decided to take on a child with a severe medical condition without saying a single word to me?"

"I didn't decide it yesterday, Maya," Cole said, his tone desperate, reaching out to grab my hands. This time, I didn't pull away, but my hands remained limp in his grip. "Sarah’s condition deteriorated two months ago. The state was already preparing to place Leo in foster care the moment she passes. Do you have any idea what foster care would do to a three-year-old boy fighting for his life? Julian’s son, Maya! I couldn't let him be thrown into the system. I couldn't."

"And what about us?" I cried out softly, tears spilling over again. "Where do I fit into this, Cole? Am I just supposed to wake up one day, welcome a sick toddler into my house, pretend I'm his mother, and ignore the fact that you hid this entire second life from me for our entire marriage?"

"I was going to tell you!" he insisted, his grip tightening slightly. "I was trying to find the right time, the right way to explain it so you wouldn't feel overwhelmed! But then your father showed up, threatening me, digging through my life like a vulture, and everything blew up."

"My father didn't force you to lie to me for a year!" I pulled my hands out of his grip, taking a step back. "You chose to carry this alone. You chose to trust a dead man's secret over your own wife!"

The door to Room 412 slowly opened again. Sarah stood there, clutching the frame for support, a thin hospital blanket wrapped tightly around her frail shoulders. She was trembling, her pale face slick with sweat, her wide, dark eyes moving back and forth between Cole and me.

"Cole?" she rasped, her voice paper-thin. "What's... what's happening?"

Cole immediately turned, moving to her side to support her weight before she could collapse. "Sarah, you should be resting. Please, sit back down."

"I heard shouting," she whispered, her gaze locking onto me. She looked at the photos scattered on the floor, then at my tear-streaked face. Her expression shifted from confusion to a deep, agonizing realization. "Oh, God... you're Maya."

I stood frozen, unable to speak, looking at this woman who looked like a shadow of a human being.

"I'm sorry," Sarah sobbed, covering her mouth with a trembling hand as Cole gently helped her sit back on the edge of the bed. "I'm so sorry, Maya. This is my fault. I made him promise... I was so scared. I didn't want anyone to judge me, or make Julian's death a spectacle again... I didn't know he kept it completely hidden from you..."

"Sarah, stop," Cole said gently, kneeling beside her. "You don't need to apologize for anything."

"Yes, I do!" she cried, looking at me with frantic, desperate eyes. "Maya, please... Cole is a good man. He's been the only person in the world who didn't abandon us. When Julian died, everyone ran away. The managers, the band, the friends... everyone vanished. Cole was the only one who stayed. He paid for my rent, he paid for Leo's medicine... he did it all out of love for Julian. Please don't hate him for protecting us."

Looking at her—a dying mother terrified for the future of her little boy—I felt the anger inside me dissolve into an unbearable, suffocating sorrow. How could I be angry at a woman who was counting down her final days on Earth? How could I hate a man for being so fiercely loyal that he was willing to break his own heart to keep a promise?

But understanding his nobility didn't make the betrayal hurt any less. It didn't erase the fact that Cole had built a massive wall between us, deciding that I wasn't strong enough, or trusted enough, to share his burden.

"I don't hate him, Sarah," I said quietly, my voice hollow. "And I don't hate you."

I looked at Cole, who was looking up at me from his knees beside Sarah's bed. He looked small, exhausted, and utterly vulnerable.

"I need time, Cole," I said softly, stepping backward down the hallway.

"Maya, please don't walk away," Cole begged, starting to stand up. "We can talk about this. We can fix this."

"Fix it how?" I asked, stopping near the elevator buttons. "You've already made your choice to adopt Leo. You made that choice without me. Now I have to figure out if I can live with the consequences of your choice."

"Where are you going?" he asked, his voice breaking.

"I don't know," I said truthfully. "All I know is I can't stay in a marriage where decisions about my life are made without my consent."

I hit the call button for the elevator. As the doors slid open, I took one last look at Cole standing in the long, sterile hallway of Ward 4. He didn't follow me. He couldn't. He had a dying woman in his arms and a sick child in the room behind him.

I stepped into the elevator, the doors sliding shut, leaving me in the silence of my own uncertain world.
